My First This Year

Late yesterday, out of the blue, I had my first hummer. My azaleas are in full bloom all around the feeder and my little friend dropped by. Wish I had my camera ready then.

Congratulations! Are you the owner of the March 16th dot on the hummingbirds.net first arrival map?

I am gazing out the window at a blue sky full of puffy clouds, and 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground. It will be awhile before this garden is ready for hummingbirds. The daffodils are 1/2 up, the wood hyacinths are just beginning to poke through, and only the early crocuses and snowdrops are blooming.

It will be at least another month for us.

The first has bloomed now, and I've posted pictures. I'm doing a time lapse video of these growing, so I think I have the light too far away to accommodate the cameras. They are under a 7" humidity dome, and the light is on top. If I didn't have to accommodate the cameras, I'd put the light about an inch or two away from the top of the plant.

What is wrong with my tomatoes! My first year planting them.

It may grow past the damage. Or it may not. I personally would eat the fruit they produce--others may have a different opinion--but the badly damaged ones may not produce fruit or only produce a small amount, and it may be stunted. The brown spot on the tomato in the first picture looks like damage from rubbing against the cage. Such damage is no big deal unless a mold or something takes the opportunity to start rotting the fruit or it attracts the attention of a pest. EDIT: For future, maybe you can put your plants somewhere else on your property. If not, maybe you can talk to your neighbor and come to some kind of agreement or you can offer to pull his weeds by hand/hire a neighborhood kid to pull his weeds by hand or something, depending on what problem he's trying to solve.

Congrats, Martha. My Liatris is long gone but I remember from years past how much the butterflies adore the blooms. I've been away this summer so didn't expect much when I got home but I'm discovering various sized Monarch cats throughout my 'what is now' a very wild butterfly garden! I've brought some in to raise and now have 4 fresh eggs I was able to locate after recently watching mama Monarch lay eggs. I have plenty of milkweed to use for food, thanks to Tom. Most of the native milkweed here is pretty much gone. I hope the little guys that had an early start in the garden are healthy. It just breaks my heart when they eclose with deformed wings or have those horrid fly eggs. But at least they will have a better chance of maturing into a healthy butterfly when they are protected from the predators. Mary

I am not sure I could live in a house without a fireplace!! My previous residence was heated by wood stove although its solar absorption was strong enough that having the wood stove going full time was only necessary in the coldest weather. My current place has a gas fireplace - much more environmentally friendly - and is so easy and fast to turn on or off so I use it often. Especially when I first get up in the morning to take the chill off before the heater kicks in. And in wet stormy weather, which we can have in abundance in winter :-) I find fires and fireplaces very comforting so never restrict their usage to just providing warmth........it's much more of an ambience thing for me.

Thank you. Gives you a warm feeling to first look at them. I'm sure you will see them soon. Yes I did report on the hummingbirds. net site. I keep up with their migration so I will know when to put my feeders out.

Congratulations! We will have more when the coral honeysuckle blooms. Mine has not bloomed yet.
