here are a few of what is up and running early this spring- enjoy!

i hope it is okay to post these pics here; i wasn't sure if there was a hosta gallery or not because i do not post pics very often.

this is dress blues that i just bought a month ago.

striptease lookin stunning as usual in her second year with me

key lime pie a month old kickin' butt with francee in the corner

august moon in its third year looking brilliant and needing more space...

june in its second year with me and very small, slow grower- however; gorgeous

whirlwind just got it this week and built a special planter for it.

one of my hosta / shade beds: august moon,june, a couple undulata and fortunei and coral bells

another hosta bed (second photo):key lime pie, japanese painted fern, francee, queen josephine and striptease- captain kirk can be seen in the background.(nelly moser clematis grows right above them all (first photo)

another hosta bed: one year old sagae, fortunei, great expectations (slow...), and wide brim

another angle: mamma mia in the wheelbarrow,a couple undulatas, and paul's glory on the end

another shot with ajuga in full bloom: a fern grows in the well along with some english ivy. sweet woodruff grows here and there.

i hope you enjoy these shots.

P.S. the wishing well planter, wheelbarrow planter, ornamental bridge and all of the other planters are all homemade in my shop.

Pretty!! I agree with Alexa, the hard scape you have added really sets off your plants. I was also impressed with how neat your edges are. We love garden pictures here. Thanks so much.

Your gardens are beautiful. I only hope as mine matures and I learn more about gardening I can accomplish what you have. I want to become a Master Gardener and was going to start classes but told a friend I would wait for her to retire next year so we can do it together. What else is planted with the hostas? I have an area under my trees that I want to have a shade garden and so far just have some ferns and a gardenia. What is the last flower, the purple spikey one? Love it. Did you have to train or tie the clematis to climb up the gardeners pole or does it do it by itself. Enjoy!

First of all, I rarely post on this forum and have NEVER to my knowledge posted about Terra Nova before. Let alone ganged up with Gardengal to "rattle" about them. I run into Gardengal on many forums because we seem to have similar interests but I've never met her nor emailed with her though I'd like to. I usually post on Clematis and Northwestern Gardening though I visit many other forums occasionally. I was stunned to see someone criticizing Terra Nova which was done in the first post. To me Dan Heims is a local garden celebrity and hero to plant collectors everywhere. I have no knowledge of how long they trial their plants and no knowledge of their plants not doing well in other zones. I certainly am not admitting anything or modifying my defense rattle in any way because I haven't participated in any discussions about Terra Nova in the past. I have dozens of Terra Nova cultivars in my garden and don't have any problems with them other than Autumn Blush corepsis which I've killed twice. I do have an online friend who is in the garden design business in NY and she loves Terra Nova plants too. I do not work for Terra Nova, I was a florist for twenty three years and now sell gifts and home decor wholesale to stores. I have talked to Dan Heims once on the phone because I was interested in hiring one of his former employees. That is the extent of my personal contact with him. He gave her an excellent reference and I did hire her and she was an excellent employee but Terra Nova wasn't a big part of our conversations. I have toured their display garden twice as part of an open garden tour here called Le Tour des Plants in the fall. It is an amazing garden.

Dave, good call on that uncinata, I knew something about that bugged me, but it has a curved trunk so I did not realize it was not level. Going back and looking at it now I see I will have to make an adjustment. Thanks to everyone for the name corrections, I will update my database. I am curious, what programs, methods do others use for there databases? I understand the importance, and wonder if there is a better method than the Excel spreadsheet I use?

Dan, Thanks for all the great photos. It's always fun to see how you are building your garden. I really like some of the conifers posted in the gallery. The Abies lasiocarpa is excellent, although I was surprised at the slow growth rate that you are getting with it- I wonder if it will accelerate with a little more age. Also love the 'Gebelle's golden spring'. Totally agree with your opinion on Ginkgos- I find them somehow fascinating, can not wait for mine to get some more age to them. Please excuse me for not popping up some pics right now- I would rather wait until the candles have stopped extending and new growth has fully pushed. shannon

very nice! It is hard for us "tundra gardeners" to imagine how lush things can be in the PNW.

I had to laugh when I saw that very neat pointed vertex on the Whirlwind planter. My wife has forbade any sharp points in our gardens - if there is one like this anywhere in the yard, one or both of us will run into it at least once a day!

idiothe-if you notice in that photo the jagged planter fits its spot perfectly; i utilize every square inch of real estate because i live in a townhouse complex. i saw an extra square foot or two so i had to claim it lol.

the PNW is a lush haven for hostas no question. but last summer was as hot here as anywhere in the world from May onwards.

I never really thought about putting some of my hostas in pots! They really add dimension to your garden. If I do this, I should have room for MORE hostas!! Thanks for the suggestion.

from what some experienced hostaholics have told me, they do very well in containers; usually first to awaken in the spring and if you're in a warmer zone, it will guarantee a better chance of a chill than in the ground.

i have many roses and hostas in pots cause real estate is at a premium in my townhouse complex; i have no choice if i want to utilize every nook and cranny.

i really appreciate the kind compliments; i put one heckuv an effort into a meticulous little oasis of plants and such.
i think next spring i am going to dig out some of the less flashy hostas and donate them to the neighbours; i sense that i am turning into a bit of a collector on the low end of the food chain. lol. i am always keeping my eye out for the right hosta at the right price in the right condition.
the heuchera bud is starting to bite as well and i will need to make room for that too.
