Soil mix

I am using a mix of soil, perlite and orchid bark mix. For some reason I can`t get the orchid bark mix right now so can I replace that with Hydroton. TIA.

Definitely. I sometimes use hydroton pellets in my soil mix to "chunk" it up.

I have used aquarium gravel when I had no other choice and it worked as well, not quite as good because the mix is heavier and holds less air but nothing has sulked terribly because of it. I often use Hydrotron as a drainage layer in the bottom of pots. It would be neat to see a Hoya grown in Semi-hyrdoponics using Hydrotron.

There is a difference between slow release and controlled release fertilizers. Slow release fertilizers are usually granular, and supply nutrients in a form unavailable to plants unless converted to something useable by the plant's physiochemical activities or acted upon by soil biota to convert the fertilizer ingredients into ionic form the plant can use. For my succulents I use 50% pumice, 30% potting soil/ EB stone cactus soil, and 20 % of either pea gravel, horticulture charcoal, perlite, decomposed granite, or 1/4" silica stones. It really depends on what I have access too when I'm mixing my soil. For my lithops and lophophora I use equal parts pumice, and Hort charcoal. I have granite out croppings all over my property and large quartz crystals the size of small boulders that are scattered about. I would love to collect some of the quarts chips for my next lithop since I recent read they some of them grow in crushed Quartz in Africa.

I find different rooting techniques have different success rates depending on where you are, and environmental things like altitude, warmth, humidity, presence or absence of bacteria/spores in air and soil..In the north (zone 4/5 Ontario) I used to root cuttings in summer in ordinary potting soil under a clear soda bottle greenhouse that worked best when it was actually a bit misty.. I kept them indoors in sunny window because outside warmth and moisture were insufficient. They struck fast and easily that way and I never had a problem with mold.. Without the botlle/greenhouse affair cuttings would usually dry up before rooting. Here in Houston air carries a lot more humidity year round and I found the greenhouse system with potting soil inclined the whole situation to mold and rot, perhaps also because higher percentage of organisms in air and soil. The cuttings seemed to need air circulation.. After experimentation I found best success using plain vermiculite outdoors in the open air in a forsythe pot. No cover. This works well most of the year. I am still experimenting with different methods though.

In your original post you list off different types of organic matter to use for different plant types, yet it seems you do not want to admit the fact that it is not the percent of organic material that matters but rather the properties each one provides. Why would a vegetable prefer a container mix with some compost or manure (neither of which I would add, BTW)? Why would an orchid want coarse bark? In tapla's 5-1-1 mix, swap the bark for crushed cocoa bean shells and tell me if a plant still thrives when the mix is at 85% organic material. Or if the plant even grows at all. The very first egregious error you have made is about the organic material percentage you give for carnivorous plants. Most common carnivorous plants will thrive in a mix containing just 40-50% peat moss. In fact, 80-100% peat can be quite detrimental. They will survive but not thrive. Some sphagnum moss and orchid bark should be mixed in for a Nepenthes. Perlite, pumice, crushed lava rock, grit, or very course sand would be the inorganic materials used for all. In the first argument you make about the need for high organic material in a potting mix, you say that a mix for vegetables that is only 10% organic material is hard to grow in unless you water and fertilize constantly. Again, the reason for this is the physical properties associated with each ingredient. Generally speaking organic materials tend to absorb water and nutrients more than inorganic ones. The type of organic material used will determine how much better. It really is that simple. And this goes for pretty much all of your arguments for a plant struggling or needing more care in less organic matter. *uses made up organic material percentages as an argument* *uses made up organic material percentages as an argument* *uses sand as an example of inorganic material that a plant (azaleas/rhododendrons) won't thrive in, compared to bark in which it will* Sand is really not a good ingredient to use in container mixes as a general rule unless it is very coarse. Therefore, using it as an example for why a plant will struggle in a mix that is not high in organic material is a bit ridiculous to begin with. I wonder what would happen if one used coarse vermiculite as a basis for an azalea potting mix? More water retentive than sand, provides more aeration than sand, absorbs nutrients better than sand.. And to flip things around more, would using charcoal as the bulk of an azalea's potting mix produce the same result as using composted bark? Highly unlikely even if the percentages were the same. *uses made up organic material percentages as an argument* Going back to your original post you say to assume that the particle size of the materials is 2.5mm and to basically throw away any notion about a perched water table. This CANNOT be done when you yourself are using composted bark and peat moss to make the basis of almost all of your arguments. Neither one of these materials have a uniform particle size of 2.5mm. If you were somehow able to sift out the peat fines (don't know what you'd be left with other than hard balls of peat and some small sticks) and get rid of the composted bark fines the very same 5-1-1 soil mix would perform differently than it did before. Which then brings us back to the first comment I left. The type of organic material matters when making your arguments because each one has different physical characteristics and behaves differently in a container soil. Which you don't seem to want to talk about. In response to my first comment you say "while the point you make is interesting, you turn the subject into a 10-variable experiment that makes it impossible for anyone except a PhD working in an industrial lab to calculate anything. It does not need to be that difficult. I don't need to get 20 types of organic material and make the experiment so complicated it becomes worthless." You disregard my comment to then go on to use the same organic material percentages to explain how you're right. Oh, and that response to me was rather contradictory to your response to tapla when you said: "I want the experience of trying to grow everything in everything and finding the hard way what works and what does not work." Lastly, you mention that most casual gardeners will use perlite to lower the organic matter content of commercial potting mixes. They are not purposely trying to lower the organic matter in the mix, that is just an after effect from the reason for adding perlite. They are simply trying to counteract the cons associated with using a peat based mix, which is what most easily accessible commercial potting mixes are. Peat has a small particle size, is very water retentive, compacts... Using perlite, to an extent, helps to "lighten" the mix, increases drainage, and adds aeration. I recently received a nice sized pot of H. lacunosa grown in semi-hydro with hydroton from a friend of mine in a hoya swap. It is VERY healthy and so simple! He even makes his own hanging pots with entwined paper clips (which is what I got...very cool!). You can just take any clear container (like those from chinese restaurants used for soup) and make some medium-sized holes maybe about 2 inches from the bottom. Fill the water until it reaches the holes, and then just refill when you see the water is gone.

I know linearis is another one that people like to use this method with.

There are a few growers in Canada that grow all of their Hoyas this way but I have not tried. I did grow some orchids in semi hydro and they did very well with tons of root growth. The trick is to start from cuttings because the old roots often die off and can cause rot, same with orchids.
Repotting is so much easier and all you really have to worry about is flushing the pots with clean water once and a while. Semi Hydro is probably great for vacations depending on how deep you make the reservoir.

I use the hydroculture method on most of my hoyas. I'm too cheap to buy the containers specifically made for doing hydroculture, and I'm not sure they would be large enough for growing hoyas if I did.
The biggest problem I have run into is finding plastic pots, especially hanging baskets, that don't have holes. Saucers are ok, as well as self waterers, but they are limiting as to how much water one can put in the reservior. Until I solve this problem, it's almost more trouble than using soil (but I'm working on it). Having said that, I don't know if I'll ever go back to a soil type subtrate.
I know there are others on this forum that use hydroton. Maybe they would like to chime in.

Sande I used a nice blue semi transparent kids sand bucket for the beach when I was growing a big Cymbidium in semi hydro. The bucket came from the dollar store for next to nothing. I guess you could use just about any pot as long as you can make a hole in it fairly easily. You could adapt pots that have a hole in them by sealing it with a plastic patch of some kind and some silicone.

I've thought of sealing the holes...infact, I have done one or two that way. Seems like I looked at buckets too but most were way too large for what I have right now. However, I will keep those suggestions in mind. The bucket might be the answer for the hanging basket. I'll have to check that out.

I'm thinking of getting a large tray or plastic tote and sitting many of the smaller ones in it with the tray water level where I would want the water level in the pots. The old simple saucer effect. I have a trip coming up and I'm trying to figure how to keep all my children safe until my return.

Sande I was going to mention that because it was my first thought, the plastic tote as a reservoir. I will be finishing my self watering project this weekend I hope, will post photos but it is geared towards pots filled with soil mix and watered from below. I did pick up a fantastic drip irrigation system that uses a reservoir like a plastic garbage can and gravity to water plants, that could work very well for semi hydro if the pots were in a tray to catch any overflow.

I have always found that sand or gravel just make the soil mix heavy and do nothing to aid drainage. If you cannot get any bark, I would just add a little extra perilite to help lighten the soil mix. I also grow succulents and I use no sand or gravel in my mix; I just use perilite to lighten the soil and aid drainage and the succulents do great.

Local growing conditions (both inside and outside) will also play into what works and what doesn't so you just need to experiment a bit and go from there.

I use to have an AV collection. They were watered with the pots sitting on a grate. The grate was in a large pan filled with water below the grate. There was a piece of string or yarn stuck in the bottom of each pot that acted like a siphon as it dangled into the water under the grate. It worked great as long as the siphon string didn't become disengaged or got dry. It happened more times than I care to remember.

The ebay drip irrigation kit looks pretty interesting. Did you get that for your self watering setup? Regardless, I'd like to see pixs of what you did. I'm always interested what others have done. Often it's better than anything I could think up.

I got the drip irrigation for my plants that are in pots out on the balcony but what you described is similar to what I am making to water some of my Hoyas and orchids that don't like to dry out. I am planning on using the set up if I am going to be away for more than a week at a time. I have a feeling I should have gotten one of the ten dripper sets to have as backup for the left over indoor plants that wont fit in the trays.
