Hoya Kerrii w/Black Spot?

This is the one I got from my local GH so cheaply on yesterday. I think it has black spot, but since I've never had to deal with any types of fungus on my plants, I'm not sure. Is it commom for the plant to only have spots on the back side of the leaves? The fronts look nice and green, but the backs have the spots. Thanks,

BTW, should I trash this plant to prevent black spot from spreading to my other plants?

Hi, I am not as knowledgeable as others here, but I see no one else has responded so....I have a variegated hoya kerrii that I also purchased from a local nursery. This one also has spots on the backs of the leaves, but I have gotten several new leaves and lots of new growth that do not have the black spots on it. I treated this plant with a systemic powder mainly to prevent mealies and scales but perhaps it is helping to prevent additional spots. I did not even remove the leaves with the spots and have not lost any leaves due to fungus or disease, only to accident while hanging this plant. I have not noticed any spread of the fungus. Perhaps this is not the right course, but I really really like this plant. I personally wouldn't throw it away....but I can't give up on a plant until there seems to be no hope left. If the leaves feel firm and the fronts look ok, I would hang in if you can.

Hi Sara,

The leaves do feel very firm and the vines look like they are healthy also. I treated the leaves to a Neem spray because this is supposed to help combat fungus, as well as pests. I leached the soil also in case it had been over fertilized by the grower. Someone has said that over fertilization can cause the black/brown spots as well. It just seems so odd that the spots occur only on the back sides of the leaves. I also put a peeled clove of garlic down in the soil, as it is also supposed have natural fungicidal properties. Yet another person has said to rub cinnamon on the affected leaves. Within a month or so of the cinnamon treatment, the spots may fade. Either nothing will happen with all these treatments, or some VERY interesting things will happen.:) I won't throw the plant away, just cuz I'm curious to see how it all turns out. I will, however, isolate it from my other plants in case whatever is ailing it is contagious. Thanks, Sara, for your input.

Hi I give the whole leaf,both sides that is infected and sometimes the leaves around the sick leaves.I am not sure how fare away but maybe 1 foot. I spray very sparely?Very light dusting.I leave it on about 10 to 14 days. I then spray with plain water to wash clean. I will repeat if I see it spread to more areas but usually one time is all that is needed. I think my kerrii needs to have a treatment. I have also read that some people also use a few drops of Cinnamon oil in there spray bottle.I was thinking about given this a try then there's no need to wash the leaves 10 days later. From my experience, Hoya leaves root readily. However, it's my understanding that only those that get some (even a bit, probably...) of the main stem will actually (eventually...) produce new growth. I always insert a perfectly healthy, accidentally knocked-off leaf back on the soil with the main plant. They root at least 95% of the time. I have yet to have any produce new growth (and, BTW, I've been doing this 25+ years...) Lydia, I think it's likely that you got some "DNA" from the main stem, which is why you got some new growth. The ugly markings that I get on mine, remind me that I seriously sunburned nearly all my plants when I brought them over here... I am mixed about what I think of this. Some of you will remember that I put two rooted plain green cuttings into a self-water pot, BEFORE I read that most of you keep this one significantly dryer. It is receiving less sun than before, but is out in the elements all the time, with wind and wild critters. I am pretty excited as one of my sleeping peduncles (which all this time I thought were air roots!) is developing and I should have a bloom in three or four weeks, if the creek don't rise, and I hold my mouth just so! I tend to do a lot of misting under the tree. I have epies, and mostly hoyas out there. The Epi society recommends daily misting to deal with heat, so I crank up the wand, and spray everything in sight! Two days after I made sure to get the Kerrie, two leaves up and showed black markings, like following veins. I backed off a bit spraying, the marks are still there, but not spreading. I am wondering if the 'orginal' environment does not have something like mountain elevation with lots of sun, and humitidy that could be tough to replicate. In the gallery there are awesome shots of blooming Kerriis... makes me really grumpy that this one is soooo tough to figure out. My v. Kerrii cutting spent the winter nearly dry to the bone, teeny cutting, potted up, behind someone else. Emptying the plant room in Spring, and Surprise! Poor thing. Still alive, still two leaves. No sign of three showing up any time soon. All I can offer is that it is a plant that can get seriously ugly!

Hey Denise, I tried to post this several hrs. ago, but think GW was having trouble. So I'll try again ... Speaking of pink leaves on H. variegates, look what I found yesterday, on just a Krimson Queen, but still one we all know & many love, so pretty. Snowed here yesterday, several inches, so a splash of color is extra nice. I no longer have my green & white Kerri (which was hydro); you & I had discussed some of these are unstable & make strange growth, mine pooped out maybe a year ago last Summer. Thanks for asking abt my losses w/ Hurricane Sandy, it was (IIRC) sadly, lost 7 of the 11 Hoyas w/ which David had gifted me. Am happy to say the Macrophyllas made it. A couple of the other large leafed ones too. Sadly the loss included a couple of cuttings I'd successfully re-hydrated. Oh well! Glad to say I still have my all green Kerrii which also grows Hydro in Leca stones & bloomed 2.5 yrs. after cutting. Happy to report Denise that both Sans cylindrica leaves you'd shared w/ me have taken off. Hope you saw I posted some of that, likely as Sans. forum (thanks again). Hey HoyaLove. Grow Happy, thanks for your additional suggestions. I have a triangle leaf ficus that has mushrooms. They come and go, I wonder if garlic would help that? How interesting. I will have to try the garlic and the cinnamon on the leaves on another that I do have in isolation and has a brown dusting all over it. I am glad that you aren't going to throw your plant away that always makes me sad....I have hundreds of "babies" in my house. It is so hard to see any that are sick or suffering. :)
