My un-named guava is abt. 40 years old and this year I did get a few fruits off it, that the squirrels were kind enough to leave for me... they are ripe when they get yellowish and reddish, and can be eaten raw if you wish, just spit out the seeds which are quite large, they have a sweetish-spicey taste, quite distinctive, I like them... however, I only got a few to eat as they ripened, before the maggots formed in them and became inedible...the jelly is delish if you have the time to cook it up it's well worth it..... mostly I keep the tree for the pretty bark, I prune the lower branches to expose the trunk and limbs,and shape it to show the bark, also to hang orchids in....sally

Thanks for the answer. I have a squirrel problem, too. Both my Japanese persimmon trees have lots of fruit that is useless to me or the @#$% squirrels. They have taken a bite or two out of each fruit and now the fruit can only rot on the branch. Once I thought they were cute and even fed the beasts but now have come round to my great grandmother's view. She called them tree rats.
