Pseudo- Spring color

Since Spring doesn't seem to want to come out my way, I made up this slideshow with pics of my seedlings from this past winter to tide me over :)

I'll probably get a pic after the leaves fall for a better picture. The actual leader is there it just didn't put out a long shoot. I'm just wondering if this plant has already decided that lateral will be the dominant one. There was a dominat lateral lower in the tree that I pruned in March and then again in June and the damn thing keeps growing more than the rest of the tree. I'll likely see what spring rolls out and go from there. GG, not sure I follow. My goal is to continue to train a leader/dominant trunk (which is what you want to do - if you can - with either growth habit. I don't plan to actually remove those vigorous shoots but cut them back. Here is a Gingko I did it with. Except in this case the laterals didn't respond with vigorous shoots and the leader then put on extra growth to take the lead.

Frank mine had a really nice squat rounded caudex but I purchased it like that. It was a grafted plant, pink onto a white rootstock and I never pruned it. It's supposedly a fast growing tree but mine didn't seem to grow all that fast, maybe a few feet during the 3 years I had it. I have no idea how old the rootstock was but it was about 6" in diameter. I lost it last year. I think the soil got too moist and the GH temps were pretty cool. I didn't realize it was dead until I didn't see blooms in the spring. I treated similar to my other succulents, outside during the warm months and well watered once the foliage grew in. In the GH with little water during the winter. It blooms in the spring before the foliage grows in. Water it more then you do in the winter but not much until it gets leaves. I bought mine from Gardino's. They had some older trees that had caudexes 2' in diameter and looked like a giant tortoise. They were spectacular. I might pick another one up when I go down next month. If I do I can ask Sid how he shapes the caudexes.

Kelly...thanks so much for your investigative work....however, H. psuedo literalis is Not H. anulata...H. anulata is synonymous with H. poolei. Check the ThailandHoyaClub website on Yahoo for side-by-side pictures of psuedo literalis and anulata...very different. Anulata has basically green leaves with touches of red and the blooms differ visually from pseudo literalis. Check the website for some awesome pictures of h. pseudo literalis...but, don't look until after the auction ends!!LOL I really appreciate your efforts, Kelly, if I hadn't searched for H. anulata I'd never have found this Thai site....though it gives me zero information on the plant...I'm basically wanting to know if it's grown like H. imbricata or something else that would prohibit from spending the money on it. I'd like to know if it has to be mounted or terrarium-grown or is grown like most other hoyas. H. anulata prefers low light and will even bloom in the shade...H. pseudo literalis likes bright light and shows its remarkable colouration when the temperatures are cool. The Thai site was all in Thai...only the plant names were in English...and it took forever to bring up all of the many pictures. The plant on Ebay is listed for $20...no bidders yet, and $30 shipping (EMS), so I just want to be sure it's not one of those "difficult" hoyas before I spend the money. Camp, I do love it although I just about took it out after we had a high windstorm one day and snapped the top off, since then I've let several branches grow outward and keep the new sucker growth cut out, a sort of pseudo palm tree shape now to go in my pseudo courtyard, or maybe more like the tilt a whirl ride at the amusement park :). This is just outside our dining room window, in the fall when the leaves turn color and the pink berries, lushous. Again not a great pic but here's what the top looks like now, pic taken from our dining room window, each year the shape is getting to look a little bit better. Annette

Wow! You have been a busy pseudo-bee! It would be interesting to see these seedlings in future years. Especially with some of the cross/combinations. Good work! Phil

Thanks, Babka, Paul, tj, Cher, Phil, Phil,and Gloria. I appreciate the nice comments. Growing hosta seeds is a fun wintertime hobby. This is my fourth year growing seeds and second year hybridizing, so I'm anxious to see the seedlings from past years come up.

And those were the keepers. WOW !!! It has to be a hard choise on what to keep and let grow. Are the girls going to help name the new babies? Really a boost to the long wait for spring to finally get to Illinois.

If you ever are on a garden walk let everyone know please as I would be love to visit your garden.

Hi Connie, these were the 50 most photogenic. I have about 300-400 to go through yet. If we ever get a warm day I'm going to put them all out on the driveway to see what I really have. I'm bringing some of them to the Northwest Indiana Hosta Society "Soup and Seedlings" meeting next weekend to give away, I was asked earlier not to cull any more and to bring them along. The best 150 will go in the garden (at least until they get a litlle bigger ;) :) )and the remainder will be planted out at my parents place. Can't wait for Spring.

P.S. I'm still trying to think of some good names, inspired by my girls' names and personalities for garden names of the special ones :)

Hi Hostared, see you at the meeting. I'm bringin' about 100 so you should get something. Of course some are better than others. Here's a pic from the seed growing room today. The rest are in bigger pots under the metal halides.

Hi Bill, great to hear from you. I'm lucky enough to now have a room in the basement dedicated to growing seeds. It was my Fall project. I laid the tile, built the work surface, painted and installed a laundry tub. I won't show pics of it now because it looks like a 32 quart bag of potting soil exploded, but here are some thumbnail pics of when it was just finished.

It beats the heck out of my old setup in a knook next to the furnace :)

Love the set up. I actually use those size racks for my succulent collection in the winter. It must bring you so much happiness after work to go to this room and play!
