Hoya pseudo littoralis

Hello everyone! I'm wondering if anyone here knows anything about this hoya...of course I did a lot of searching and found nothing...not even a picture! There's one on Ebay and I'd like any information that you may have before I take the plunge. The picture from Ebay looks absolutely gorgeous; but pictures can be deceiving. Patrick, I saw that on Ebay...it looks really NICE! Love the yellow/pinkish leaves.

Great hoya detective work Kelly, I think that might be it 'anulata'.

Thanks everybody for sharing your experiences! My conclusion is...you folks definitely need some more Hoyas/Dischidias! Therefore, I highly recommend going to visit Kartuz Greenhouses down in Vista. It's definitely worth the trip. His online catalog really does not adequately represent the great variety of tropical/interesting/unusual/rare plants that he grows. Plus, his prices are really reasonable so you can get a good collection going without having to pay an arm and a leg. If anybody is interested...I also posted this thread in the following places... Haha. I love how I totally screwed up the formatting of this thread. Forgive me, GW! I think I'm in the RARELY category too. I will probably eventually climb into the SOMETIMES category, but for now I haven't been growing long enough to reliably tell whether I've lost a plant because it's difficult or because I am still learning things that will help me in future. Doug, I have to say, I'm going to treasure that quote "It felt really good to throw that one on the compost heap!" I know just how you feel, and it's reassuring to hear the words come out of the mouth of a great grower like yourself. There are these books written by Evan Harris about quitting that I discovered via This American Life Episode 7. Here is a quote from her: The more things you quit the more things you're gonna do and the more things you do the more potential you have for success. I think sometimes we hate to be quitters, and it's true that there is another side to the quit. When you stop fighting with one plant, you open yourself up to having more time to spend on other plants... new plant experiences. I think there are enough Hoyas in the world that we will always have 100 to replace the one that became a drudgery. And, you know, often that plant is way happier with someone else, so who exactly are we helping by obsessing about it? This sounds strange, but I'm getting close to giving up on macgillivrayi. There's no clear reason why I keep losing this plant, but I do and it's annoying. Archiboldiana and onychoides grow fine for me, but even macgillivrayi crosses die on me. WHY!?! I also have a hard time keeping retusa alive. It will grow super well for a while, and then I'll under-water it. I have survived lately by just taking a lot of cuttings of it when it's flourishing, so I have backups, but I'd like to just shift it to semi-hydro so I can quit worrying. Some difficult fights that I might have won? Hoya paulshirleyii, deykae, and mindorensis (yellow form). These seem to have been a matter of getting the right cutting, knock on wood. I used to think kunming kina was easy, but it threw me through a loop this winter, so I'll keep my mouth shut for now... @ Klea Haha. I had no awareness of how that would come off when I first wrote it, but every time I come back into the forum and look at it, that's what I think, too! Nope! Never giving up Hoyas! When I'm an old old lady I'll at least have a javanica in my room.

Whoa! Are those aloe flowers?? I saw aloe blooming for the first time in person when I visited Austin. Ok, maybe I've seen them blooming at flower shows, but that almost doesn't count. The good: I water everything by hand, and will take things down off the shelves on a regular basis to check out how they are doing. Almost everything is potted in coco husk chunks or fiber, which tend to let things dry out pretty well while still holding a 'core' of emergency moisture within the chunk without being soggy. Meaning I have a bit of a cushion before things go absolutely bone dry with very little risk of rotting. The bad: ...Except when I get totally absorbed in a project. Particularly knitting. I like to see progress when I knit, so I tend to do 'just a little more' until I end up falling asleep. Then I wake up in the morning realizing what I've done, and don't have time to check on the plants before work. Then I come home the next day, and do the same thing. And then I lose track of how many days it's been. I'm trying to be very good about that this time, and only go a couple days max before checking on the plants. Right now, patella is a major motivator. It is really and truly growing new leaves on those vines, and I want to keep this momentum going! The weird: Um, I like to give the hoyas some 'rain'. I have chemical wash bottles that I water my mounted orchids and some of my hoyas with, which are nice for directing a stream of water to a very specific location. Especially nice if I want to give some hoyas a drink without moving them all around. NOT fun for a really solid watering for potted plants, but fine for little drinks of water. So, I've been using these chemical wash bottles to 'rain' on my hoyas, watering the foliage. I think they enjoy this. My shelves are covered with mylar, and a lot of my hoyas are actually in a tray, so splashing water around isn't a big problem. I especially like to 'rain' on the hoyas when they have new leaf growth starting. I think this does help keep new leaves from aborting. The only downside is that I will get some water spotting, because the water I use is the same that I water the potting medium with, so it does have fertilizer in it. But I figure, in the wild, they often grow epiphytically, right? Meaning they get their nutrition from leaf debris and birds pooping on them. So my fertilizer water is the equivalent of bird poop, ha.

Hoya kentiana, wayetii, littoralis and many as of yet undetermined species like Hoya sp. Haraku are all very similar. The main differences are leaf size, shape and thickness and flower structure and of course their geographical distribution. Flower colour is usually not a good characteristic to use when identifying many plants because it is variable in populations and due to different cultural factors like light and nutrients. In Dale Kloppenburg's book World Of Hoyas he mentions that Hoya wayetii has darker margins on it's leaves, the flowers are larger than kentiana's and the corona is different because it is raised from the corolla on a short column. "The bilobed outer extensions are not markedly curved upwards at the outer apex as they are in Hoya kentiana Burton." It also mentiones in the book that Hoya wayetii was collected in 1989 by Maximo Wayet in a higher mountain area north of Baguio in the Quirino Province in the Northern portion of Luzon island, Philippines. I saw it too and thought it was pretty with the pink and yellow leaves. I'm also in love with one of his/her hoyas for auction. It started at $9.99 and was bidded on and sold. He/she has another one for auction, but it is starting at $19.99!!! I was going to bid on the next one they put up for auction, but I just don't know if I can go that high with shipping to boot!!! Oh well, nice to look at and dream...

Kelly...thanks so much for your investigative work....however, H. psuedo literalis is Not H. anulata...H. anulata is synonymous with H. poolei. Check the ThailandHoyaClub website on Yahoo for side-by-side pictures of psuedo literalis and anulata...very different. Anulata has basically green leaves with touches of red and the blooms differ visually from pseudo literalis. Check the website for some awesome pictures of h. pseudo literalis...but, don't look until after the auction ends!!LOL I really appreciate your efforts, Kelly, if I hadn't searched for H. anulata I'd never have found this Thai site....though it gives me zero information on the plant...I'm basically wanting to know if it's grown like H. imbricata or something else that would prohibit from spending the money on it. I'd like to know if it has to be mounted or terrarium-grown or is grown like most other hoyas. H. anulata prefers low light and will even bloom in the shade...H. pseudo literalis likes bright light and shows its remarkable colouration when the temperatures are cool. The Thai site was all in Thai...only the plant names were in English...and it took forever to bring up all of the many pictures. The plant on Ebay is listed for $20...no bidders yet, and $30 shipping (EMS), so I just want to be sure it's not one of those "difficult" hoyas before I spend the money. My book The Genus Hoya lists Hoya pseudolittoralis and Hoya poolei as names that have been applied to Hoya anulata in the horticultural trade. I looked up Hoya annulata in Hoyas of North eastern New Guinea as well but there were no species names listed as synonyms. The Simones Hoyas site Kelly listed lists Hoya pseudolittoralis, Hoya poolei, Hoya alata and Hoya schlechteriana as synonyms of the accepted name for this species Hoya anulata.

I got a small plant of Hoya anulata last summer and I liked it right away. The leaves turn red easily and they are nice and shiny. The flowers are said to smell like coconut and that was the main reason I decided I needed to try growing this Hoya.

Mike...thanks so much for your information....I truly appreciate it. I believe this is yet another of those hoyas that people can lump together due to their resemblance...but, those resemblances can change according to environment. I appreciate the Thai website as it clearly shows the two plants and their differences...anulata can become reddish, pseudoliteralis is yellowish and peach with red. The corollas also differ. I truly don't know who's right, but the pictures provided on the Thai site make me think this is a "must have" hoya...if it turns out to be just another red hoya, I'll be very regretful. Patrick those are the descriptions of Hoya anulata that were published by different people at different times (Hoya pseudolittoralis C. Norman 1937 etc)
but ultimately they are all one species which is Hoya anulata because Hoya anulata was the first name given to this species when it was formally described in 1905 by Schlechter. The other names if you see them on a price list or a tag in a pot are invalid and Hoya anulata would be the proper name to use.
