Just say no? Not!

An afternoon at Westwood Gardens in Rogers, Ark. today and I am once again, incorrigible. But only a little. In addition to a slew of other perennials, a Japanese maple and several succulents, I came home with another Empress Wu and a Ripple Effect.

If I am not careful, I'll be out ther digging another hosta bed!

Wow how many Empress Wu's do you have? I still have about 300 or so hostas on my wish list so until I move to a larger piece of land I'll have to wait on another E.W. Would love to have the room to plant a dozen or so in a sweep with say a grouping of Liberty and Blue Ivory together in front of them-just those three in a mass planting. I think it would look spectacular.

Just one other, and the first one has had a hard life, eaten by deer twice, attacked by a vole and just when it was getting over that, a cutworm got part of it this spring, so it is struggling. I'm replacing it in the garden with a bigger one and putting the poor injured thing in a pot, in the safety of the greenhouse, to recover. Not sure where I'm going to put it when it is well again! Might have to buy part of the neighbor's yard, lol!

Thank you adamharbeck. I was thinking I'd just make sure to stay away from toxic with all my pets but most are toxic. I guess i just say away from the deadly. hehe My mom always had cats and toxic plants with no problems in fact she has 4 kittens now and still has all her plants. My boyfriends mom also had toxic plants as long as he could remember and they normally had a cat also. My cats don't like to leave my spider plants alone but most cats are that way with spiders and no other types of plants. I most likely don't need to worry to much but that's just how I am. We also have a new kitten atm that will attack ANYTHING. Its should be hanging out of there paws grasp thought so I should be all good. It doesn't sound like it will kill them if they try eating it but will make them think again before trying it a 2nd time.

You could plant both and see whether you can figure it out. Or return both and let amazon and the vendors figure it out. I'd probably return them and try local sources. I think I found your amazon vendor, and you are correct. They are sneaky and don't say they are in China. I look for prime eligible things on Amazon, or sellers who say they are in the US and promise under 7 days for 'standard shipping.' Pretty much if 'standard shipping' is over 14 days, the seller isn't in the USA, and is most likely in China, India or another far east country. Patio hybrid seeds are everywhere around here. I even saw those in the "4 packets for $1" bin at a few places. I've seen "Sweet 'n' neat hybrid" plants around in past years, but I'm not sure I've ever seen seeds for that hybrid variety. Another strategy is to plant what you got, get some local sourced seeds, known to be "patio hybrid" seeds, and plant those as well. Anything from China that grows as big as the local "patio hybrid" seeds are the patio hybrid.

Good dog, Shasta! Friends of mine have acreage (and hostas!;-) and I often see wild turkeys off in the distance. My son-in-law would be hunting them, lol. Glad to hear the Frosted Jades are pleasing you and that in general the bed is coming along. I'd be having some if I had more land to be sure. Would you believe that since I joined the forum (3yrs.now) I have always admired Lakeside Cha Cha - the first picture in a Google search has me drooling...so pretty. Cearbhaill, I have digressed in my chat with Jon but have not forgotten the subject at hand in the slightest. You just talk to that little GE of yours and whether it be praise or threat, no doubt we will all be anticipating its appearance in the spring. ;-). This is the smaller one of mine but both were same size two years ago....smaller leaves but more vigour in the sun. The taller one, even though it is plain ugly already and halfway there to dormancy...has leaves at least twice the size of these. I've lost two now since I won't leave them alone. Think I'd learn but I like to experiment, lol. Hmmmm, I haven't tried growing one on in a pot yet.....time to visit the nursery. There must be fall sales galore. ;-)

Sandy,

I had of my my Empress Wu's in a pot last year and put it in the ground in October. The leaves on it are huge this year, much larger than the one that has been in the ground for three years.

It got beat-up by the wind while it was in the pot, but I realized that it needed lots of water when it was in the pot. Once I gave it more water, the wind didn't damage the leaves as much.

Gesila, what size pot are we talking about here? Something the size of a whiskey barrel? Or, smaller since you truly intended to return it to the ground?

Could a very large or giant hosta flourish forever in a whiskey barrel? Or ANY container for that matter except for a horse watering tank?
