mixed 6 pack seedlings tomatoes/peppers
Comments (34)Those are actually tomatoes, not peppers! I grew them in 7-gallon nursery containers, hand-mixing dirt, potting mix, leaves (green and brown) and finished compost, along with Tomato-tone fertilizer. (And got into a huge debate in the container growing section over my methods). The containers were buried in the ground which helped keep them from drying out. I staked them when they were smaller and then wove string around those metal poles. Now to come clean: I got very few ripe toms - but I learned more in six months than I had in 50 years! 1) - No matter what you hope and anticipate, Cincinnati is going to experience a drought of sunlight from mid-December to mid-February. I had a two-week period that had a total of four hours (probably less) of sunlight. Makes for some leggy plants. 2) - Unless you plan on babysitting the GH all day, every day, be sure to install an automatic vent. One day in either very late winter or very early spring, the weather forecast called for mostly cloudy skies and high temps of 48. It was 42 when I left and though I turned the heaters off, I did not open the door. The weather turned out to be very sunny with a high near 60. When I left I had hundreds of blooms and dozens of very small (pea to marble size) fruits. When I returned, I had a couple dozen blooms and dozens of fried, brown tomatoes. When I left, it was 55 in the GH, when I returned it was 125 - and that was at a foot off the ground. At the top of the plants, probably 5-10 degrees warmer. 3 - don't underestimate the way whiteflies can proliferate in a GH lacking natural predators. A few bugs here and there can turn into hundreds of thousands that are almost impossible to eradicate unless one wants to use chemicals that means the fruit will not be edible. That said, if I can afford to replace the plastic roof with twin-wall GH panels and upgrade the wiring, I will give it another try next fall/winter. Use lights to replace the sun, but run them mostly at night to also provide heat. Plus, by using the panels, I'll be able to cover them and the windows with bubble wrap - an excellent way to prevent heat loss. I'll also install an automatic, hydraulically-operated vent. I can fit maybe 70 plants inside, using either a drip or DWC hydro system (or if I get real ambitious this summer, super amend the ground and grow them directly in dirt). That's potentially 1500 pounds of maters I could sell at $3/lb. Mike...See MoreCome Join Us - 4th Annual Tomato & Pepper Seed Exchange !
Comments (145)Ok everyone....I have one packet of Spinach Tyee Hybrid to give away as a bonus. The person that wanted the last pack no longer wants it. Please let me know asap if you'd like this seed. Folks, please consider requests for bonus seeds a done deal as I have already stuffed the envelopes with the miscellaneous veggie bonus seeds that have were gifted and posted updates in all the forums. It's really not that easy for me change everything if you change your mind at this point Thanks...See MoreDon't like sweet tomatoes
Comments (6)Sunset's Red Horizon - 70 days: Old-time intense flavor. ***** Just a comment, but the SRH sold by Tomatofest is not correct for the variety and Gary knows it. The first two years he offered it was fine, a large red beefsteak that had great taste, but something went wrong re seed production somewhere and now it's a small red heart. The variety is really Rostova which Gary renamed to Sunset Red Horizon. I sent the last of my True Rostova seeds to Linda at TGS who also is listing the wrong variety, so hopefully in a year or two she'll have the correct variety as well. As for more agreesive taste varieties I didn't reread the link given by Dave b'c I'm too darn lazy this AM but if it's a non-sweet more aggressive taste you prefer then you might consider any of the earlier commercial varieties such as: Rutgers New Yorker Valiant Break O Day WI 55 Sandpoint Tigerella ( aka Mr Stripey. a small red with gold jagged stripes) not commercial but very zippy taste Gold Ball ...... and heirloom varieties such as; Druzba Cuostralee Zogola Red Brandywine ( the true one) Neves Azorean Red Bogatyr Aunt Gertie's Gold ...... for starters. And if you have courage you can try: Noire des Cosebeauf Purple Calabash. Taste is individual and perceptual so what one person experiences as taste is often not what someone else experiences. For instance, above mulio said he experiences an unpleasant astringent after taste with the cherry green when ripe variety Green Doctors, but some others I know who have grown it haven't experienced that at all. I don't like the taste of Green Zebra at all and find it to be astringent but many love it and say it's sweet tasting. And on and on it goes. Two folks growing the same variety a mile apart may experience different taste results due to many variables such as soil, amendments used, how they grow their tomatoes and on and on. And at sites such as this one you've got folks from all areas of the country making suggestions and just think of the variables inherent it that. So the only way you'll know what appeals to you is to grow some out, different ones year after year, and see what does best with your soil, your amendments, your weather, etc. Carolyn...See MorePurple Haze, Ed's Millennium, N.A.R.X., and other Tomato 'Porn'
Comments (27)Cindy asked, "I probably missed this - but with what did you cross NAR?" Cindy, NARX refers to Brandywine x Neves Azorean Red, a cross that was done in 2007 in Indiana and the F1s and subsequent generations being grown out in several locations including Indiana, Germany, New Jersey, Delaware, Mississippi, Texas, New York and I think Virginia. Ray got his seeds from the New Jersey participant but I don't know whether he received F1 or F2 seeds originally or at what generation he is growing it out in 2009. You will see the various recombinations of the original cross more frequently referred to as Brannar or BWxNAR....See Morewertach zone 7-B SC
