Any White Gardens out there this year?

I was wondering how any of you are doing with your white themed gardens this season? I remember a few were just starting out. It can become quite an obsession. I thought I had all I could fit in mine and somehow I still manage to add to it.

Let us know how yours are coming along. I haven't taken any pictures this season, but when I do, I'll drop them in.

Did any of you find must have plants or combinations that you will be repeating this year? I found that edging mine with dusty miller, white geranium,white pentas, dianthus, white petunias, white verbena, white portulaca, and allysum really made a nice continuous flowering edge... I have added white impatiens in an area that is in the shade for an edging.

There are so many perennials, annuals, bulbs, shrubs, trees and vines that go nicely...the list is really long. If you have a white themed garden, let us know how you like it and what is your favorite plant in it.

JoAnn, I have an area with dwarf white iris surrounded by candytuft that makes me smile everytime I see it.

You know - I don't have one but I have been trying to figure out what to plant in this one area that I want to start new beds in and I think this will do the trick! I remember seeing all the wonderful pictures last year.

Thanks for the reminder about them and the great idea!

Here's mine: 1 - No new roses! (no room) 2 - Deadhead, clean up more often! 3 - Dig out invasive underplantings! 4 - Figure out ways to stop the new dog from chewing up my sprinklers and roses! 5 - Spray deer repellent regularly (damn dog doesn't deter them!) 6 - Replace dead roses with ones from the pot ghettos, thus shrinking the pot ghettos! 7 - Dig out the Bermudagrass that has invaded one whole area of the yard, engulfing 4 rose beds!! Auugggghhhh!!! 8 - Spend more time outside! (Get away from the computer!) We'll see how many of these get done...

Eduarda do plant a winter jasmine I think you will really enjoy it, this is a bit long winded but....I also grow winter jasmine, mine is quite old somewhere around 40 years. Not only a beautiful plant when covered in flowers but is also very attractive when in the green, so to speak. It is tough and reliable, depending on the weather it can start blooming in November and continue on through the winter or if it's a really cold and stays cold I've seen it hold off on flowering till the beginning of March. The year it did this it put on a magnificent show. My or I should say taken ownership of W.J. is growing on a trellis on the side of the neighbor's carport, why on the neighbor's carport you might ask, well my neighbor at the time planted it on her carport but it's planted in our driveway. Years later after their place had been sold several times another survey was done and what do you know the carport encroaches 8 inches onto our property as does the concrete retaining wall. The poor lady who owned the house at the time had just sold to a young couple and the whole deal was going to fall through, we went to her lawyer with her and signed a waver to the effect the new owners could have access to our driveway if they need to work on their concrete carport. I've also claimed my side of their concrete retaining wall (on our property too) I've covered it in ivy, clematis and other stuff. This is now the wall that helps contains my little courtyard, use to be the top end of the driveway but that's another story :o). I prune the jasmine right back to stubs every spring and I'm rewarded with fresh green growth by summer which is lovely to look at even when not in bloom. Annette

First off let me say thank you to Linda for posting that image... I still really want that DL ;-) I would love to reply individually to each of you but as I can only sit for short periods right now due to the pain... plus the meds the doc has me on don't help my brain to function properly LOL... so I am just going to post a single reply.. even though so many of you were sooooooo kind to offer advice from your experiences, advice which I'm going to heed BTW.. I am calling up a specialist tomorrow as the doc that saw me was just an ER doc.. not a specialist and even he suggested that I go to a spine doc to get a more thorough review of my case but he told me that I better schedule the surgery now or I'd be waiting for at least a month or so from the date I schedule to get it done... so I did. From what I read out of the paper the doc gave me the surgery is supposed to fuse my spine over the herniated discs... supposedly this will relieve the pain.. but what I was told 15 years ago when they wanted to do this was that it would reduce my range of movement and that is something I absolutely DO NOT WANT! That is the main reason I don't want surgery... I've done a lot of research in the two years following my initial injury back then and did some more tonight but I will wait until I get a copy of my records from the hospital to do more research as it should have the diagnosis written on them... somewhere. The ER doc also suggested that I will have to get an MRI as the X-ray can't show tissue damage just bone... DUH!! Like I didn't know that already *sarcasm here* I used to work in a vet clinic so I have actually seen a surgery done on a dog with a herniated disc.. and although the dog appeared to be better after he still had lingering problems... they did something called a laminectomy to the dog... something which I have read tonight they can do for me to help but something about the instability of the spine caused by degenerative disc problems... I'm not sure... and I'm not thinking all too clearly as the meds are kicking in.... so I'll let it go for now.. and post more when I'm more conscious. LOL ttfn Mystic.

any 'after-blight' care for garden this year?

First, I will be planting in some of the same beds due to size limitations. Do I have to do anything to that ground to "sterilize" or remove any spores that might be lurking? Late blight doesn't over-winter in the soil, only in live tissue. It is an airborne fungus. Do I need to add anything to the soil before planting? Compost, amendments, etc. That is always a good idea each season regardless of the previous season's results. Finally, is there any sprays or chemicals that should be incorporated in a plan of action to prevent the blight from striking? Fungicides from the day of planting and sprayed on a regular basis per the instructions on the label. The previous discussion linked below is filled with relevant info and a search of the forum using 'late blight' will pull up many more if you want to browse through them. But the crucial question is was your problem truly late blight? Or perhaps something else that might require a different approach this year? Other much more common diseases are often mis-labeled "late blight" despite their less terminal symptoms and require different treatment. LB so quickly and so totally destroys plants that it is vital to know for sure what you are dealing with. Hope this helps. I must confess, my white garden is looking pretty pitiful! I've been devoting more time to the beds which don't need so much work, and the white garden still only consists of a non blooming bleeding heart, lots of $1 Easter lilies that came back (thank goodness!), and a clump of lychnis. I have lots of plants that can be moved into it, and hopefully it will get some attention soon.

Keep those pics coming. It was so nice to see your garden last year!

I was wondering how yours was doing from last year. Seems most people don't understand why I do a white garden, guess I have to have them here at dusk to see. I can't wait for the foliage from the spring display to die down...right now the tree peonies, iris, jacobs ladder, salvia, roses, geraniums, allium, and lilacs as well as some annuals and late blooming bulbs are carrying it so far. The real WHITE show will get going probably June. I added Physostegia Miss Manners this year as well as some Eupitorium Chocolate, another geranium Splish Splash, an astilbe, some snow in summer, more campanula and some White Cupid's Dart. I made a few other changes to it, but for the most part there is no room for much else. I lost a bit over this winter in that garden too. The cleome really took over last year and this year there seems to be thousands of seedlings everywhere, so I am trying to at least yank out the ones that are in the front, so they don't cover and hide the lower growing perennials, shrubs and annuals. Thanks for enjoying the pictures. I can't wait to take more.....JoAnn

It is a project that has taken a few years, this year I might add a sheppards hook and add some hanging potted white flowering plants...I just don't know if I'll be able to keep up with the watering that containers require. I wish I planted it in the open, so the moon could really shine on it. I planted it under the canopy of high trees.

No pictures this year yet...I have to get the camera out. I recall being asked what's in my white garden and I always say too much to list..so tonight I had posted on the moon garden forum some of the plants I have in my white garden....of course I forgot to list some like my Immortality Iris, my penstemon Husker's Red, and my Arctic Snow and Ice Carnival daylilies...and I didn't put any dahlia's into the garden this year. If you are curious, take a peek at the moon garden forum..I'd love to hear some suggestions...If you can't tell, I am always looking for new additions. I am also working on a butterfly garden nearby it. Love to hear what you have.....Jo Ann
