I did not order many this year:~(

I didn't plan to order any but i was lucky enough to get a gift card. I am also lucky enough to be leaving for florida on friday and no time to plant them now not to mention it is still a bit early imo.

so this is what i did - as i do most years

step one opened the box

step two open them up and check out the roots - some of them were several small plants so i seperated them - i know a lot of people like to plant them in the same hole so it looks like a larger plant faster but i don't like doing that

here is everything ready to go

now i just stick them in the pot and water - that simple - notice the pot has wheels so it can go in and out of the garage. I can easily put 3x the amount in here I just spaceed them out because i have nothing else on order :~(

super work ...

only thing i would do different ... i put the peat medium in a bucket.. and pre-wet it ... to insure that it is throughly wetted throughout the pot ...

peat can be real tricky to wet properly ..

and i wouldnt want to worry in FL about whether there is some weird clump of dry medium in the middle that didnt get wet ...

i am sure.. with your experience.. that you will know.. my thoughts run more toward total newbies ...

Oh, my aching back. After a good soak I put 8 in the ground, the rest in pots until I decide where they will go. I was potting the last ones in the dark. Ibuprofen and hot tub, here I come.

Tokudama Aureonebulosa. Planted it right next to Tokudama Flavocircinalis. Saw a pic in an old Hosta Journal of them together and loved it. Of course it will take a few years for them to even touch each other. That's enough for now. Thanks for looking. Please share if you have experience or pics of any of these.

BABKA, I CAN HELP WITH THE NO ROOM PROBLEM..... just box up your Snake Eyes and ship it east and south, there is always room for that one. :) I tried to get one, but Chris (or was it Gary) ....(I forget where but I called to check on it)....said that it was not going into tissue culture, and only a few were available EVER. So it is buried deep in my subconscious for the time when I find it or something very close to it again available. That is one great hosta. Perhaps you can say the cost per sq foot of a house includes the labor, but I'm not sure that applies to the garden or landscaping LABOR. It is food for thought though, Bernd.

I guess just personal preference and hearsay, Papou. I'll be honest...I do not have First Mate. Maybe I am missing something great! I have grown Kabitan, though, and it gets really ratty looking. First Mate is supposed to be a tetraploid form of Kabitan, which means it should have better substance and hold up better. I've read that it is better, but still gets a little tattered. I know for a fact that the rest of the plants on greenguy's list have good - even great - substance and hold up well all season. One possible exception may be Little Jay. It is still too new to know for sure what it will do, but it seems to be pretty sturdy based on what I saw this past season. Like I said, though...I may be missing out.

thanks, alot of people have been asking what to do when they get hostas this time of year and we are due for some frosts next week - if you believe the news.

I was going to post more about how i watered them but didn't - it took the longest time of the whole project. needless to say they are saturated.

also someone will be watering them while i am gone

I am thinking about starting a thread about the multiple small hostas you sometimes get instead of one larger plant. I really think they should be planted separate. Think it is worth a new thread?
