Everyone has a duplicate or one which really is not so good. So all you have to do is put those hostas in shopping bags with some soil and plant them at the curb with a big FREE sign on them, and voila in 10 minutes they will be gone, you have created room, and you have enabled another person! Beautiful. Whoever did the photography did an excellent job. How much of it is touched up? Do they really look that good when you plant them?

Oftentimes the photos of plants will come from the originators. I know, for example, that Rick G. has taken the photos of his plants that are in the Naylor catalog. With plants that are very new, they may be the only people with mature (or somewhat mature) clumps. With seedlings from folks like Don Dean, Rick G or Altara Scheer, I'd be pretty comfortable with the plants looking like the photos. With young sports where you only have a leaf shot or a picture of a small plant, I'm a little more wary. That's just me. I want to make sure the plant has been in a garden for at least five years.

I just looked over their online 2014 catalog. Lots of beautiful stuff, but the prices are very high! Whew! Even if I had a spare inch now to plant (I don't), I can't see spending $45 on a hosta. And what's with the sexy names now? Do you think, in my neighborhood, I could plant "Little Stiffy", "Erotica", etc. and put plant I.D. tags on those? Not in this lifetime!

Some really interesting looking new plants. I'm also running out of room so have to be picky now.

ester_b, you made me laugh! I know what you mean about some of these names. They really wouldn't look right where I live, lol. I don't have a name tag for Climax or Striptease, which are both in my front yard. :)

The key to all of these "suggestive" hosta names and not wanting to put the tags in your yard is to name them an alias that means the same. I'll give a few examples:

Striptease:

Ribbon Rag
Striped Joke
Belt Leg-Pull

Climax:

Pinnacle
Peak

That way, it's not a name that will knock anyone's socks off, but YOU still know what it is :) Yes, I am cracked in the head, how'd you figure it out?

Ester, look at the hostas that don't have two asterix next to them. The vast majority of the hostas are under $20 and those that aren't are streaked or were new last year.

I keep telling myself not to buy the new ones but I've been waiting for Continental Divide for a couple of years now...

as far as suggestive names and being worried about putting those names on plant tags ,who cares what other people in your neighborhood thinks ? I don't

I live in the middle of an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, very conservative in values. I am a member of that community. We do not ever refer to matters below the waist in conversations, jokes, etc. It is not considered to be proper behavior. I am not about to cross that line, even for my beloved hostas. As much as I like H. Erotica, it will not ever be found in my garden. By not buying it, I am also sending a message that I do not approve of naming hostas with suggestive names. They are PLANTS! Not call girls!

no identity theft here . never knew hostahillbilly even eisted until a few months ago .simple explanation is majority of hosta garden is on a hillside . and I do live in Kentucky . so I guess I believe lifes to short to worry about what my neighbors think about the names of my hosta . I have enough worries about hosta x virus and voles lol

bragu, do you not think that a large part of that 15% of a home value to be spent on landscaping actually is labor? I do most of the yard work myself except removing trees. That 15% also might include expensive hardscapes which I do not need and do not do. Bernd

BABKA, I CAN HELP WITH THE NO ROOM PROBLEM.....
just box up your Snake Eyes and ship it east and south, there is always room for that one. :)

I tried to get one, but Chris (or was it Gary) ....(I forget where but I called to check on it)....said that it was not going into tissue culture, and only a few were available EVER. So it is buried deep in my subconscious for the time when I find it or something very close to it again available.

That is one great hosta.

Perhaps you can say the cost per sq foot of a house includes the labor, but I'm not sure that applies to the garden or landscaping LABOR. It is food for thought though, Bernd.
