Shades of Red.....Share some of your favorites...Old and New....we have had threads of Red before...they never seem to be a bore.....Think Spring!

Yup Jan...that HOF is a Southern Transplant...LOL Thanks! Hey I really like that last one you posted...Hmmm sounds like sumpin I need...;) Ya gotta love the shades of red...:) Keep them coming.....hopefully some other folks will add some too...nice for new folks to see all kinds of different ones...who said Red is Red??? LOL

Hi there, This is my first attempt at posting photos, so I hope the file size is not too huge. Please help me if I need to be more viewer-friendly with my images. My picture taking abilities are also a bit suspect. :) We have lots of dirt everywhere due to a recent foundation repair on the back of the house. Here goes! This is a front bed I made "lasagna style" last fall and am in the process of planting with perennials and annuals. Here is the middle of the front bed. I have mgs, black-eyed susan vines, and hyacinth bean, which will grow up and over the fencing--I hope! There are holly hocks, cosmos, 4 o'clocks, nicotania, and marigolds, too. Back of the house where you can see the foundation destruction. There are zinns, delphs, cosmos, snappies, cleome, nicotania, and 4 o'clocks all across the back. ws toms in the middle, basil, and rosemary (too tiny to see). The three big toms on the right are from a nursery. Barrell of dwarf sunnies, larkspur, and dahlias. Mgs, zinns, and marigolds. My hope is the MGs and sweetpeas (not seen on sides and behind) will climb up and around the chair. This is a picture from the "back" of the front bed, which is looking from the opposite side of picture #2. Lots of zinns, larkspur, and dahlias. Thanks for looking and letting me share! cheers, NB

Oh, I have a long list of things I want to winter sow this year, some of which I'll have to cut because I don't think I'll have the room for them all, but a few on your list are on mine too. I just have to get around to ordering the seeds. There are some others I would love to try, but can't find the seeds for, so I'll have to buy plants next spring, if they're available. Mostly what I'm going to sow are natives for sun and shade, they'll be planted around what will be our new garage. It's going up this fall, and if I have time, I'll prepare the beds before winter. The plants I had around the old garage are in pots, and I hope to overwinter them in the pots and plant in the spring, but I may get backup seeds in case they don't. I'm more excited about winter sowing this year than I had been in the past few. Oh, and I have daylily seeds that I crossed that'll be sown too. Karen

I have an overabundance of aphids this year. I may need a few thousand more lady bugs, lol. They are everywhere and the mealy bugs are on a lot of things too. I have been blasting them with the hose but if they don't lay off soon I'll have to use poison but I don't want to. Hmmm just remembered I have that anti traspirant stuff. I wonder if that will smother them. Soapy water works well if they aren't too far gone.

Hi George - Many thanks for the tips on H+H (lacecap)+A combo. The more I look at the photos you have posted I'm getting tempted to completely eliminate mowing grass in the entire lower tier of the backyard and compose it with just pebble or flagstone walks. I can start with the shaded back half (2-3 hrs of early AM sun & perhaps 45min-1hr of setting sun) the home of most of my 4-5 varieties of Hostas - 3 layers under the corner Crab apple tree (turns beautifully red with fruits for the birds in Winter). The rest of that border measures 32ft Lx7ft (dpth) also houses 3 layers of hostas and groundcovered by White Nancy, Shell Pink & Arch Angel Lamium. I've already sank in Alice at the end where my sunny butterfly border starts, I may want to keep the taller Hostas that are now just shooting up with their buds (have lovely jasminey scent in Aug - DK name) ... the lower growing (F wms. , Francee, & snow white?) are just done. 'will perhaps dig up a few to make room for H and would like one more Querci there too. Well I'll have time to plan this Winter ... so glad to have found this place last year - so grateful for all the help, advice and inspiration I have received, truly!!!!!!! BTW how far from the trunk of the tree are you able to safely put your lacecaps,- considering the frequent watering they require (re: above pics) - also how do you keep slugs away (I have to use 'Sluggo') some years ago I was told to serve them a can of beer daily in a bowl ... all got are the drunken bunnies that could not run fast enough for some preditors to get them - obviously, no more Heineken served in the Hosta plantation!!!!

I've been looking through my albums trying to find a picture that I haven't posted yet. I don't think I have any. But here are a couple that I haven't posted too many times (I hope). I got this first one as a bonus. It was labeled "Snooks seedling". When I asked the seller for more info, I was told that she had received it as a bonus and that was all she knew about it. I'm anxious to see what it does next year.

Now this is what it's all about...as you can see some are older and a few newer..but most are on the less expensive side...showing you the Beauty you can have...even on a budget...:) The red and green is a real Christmas colouring....There are even a few beauties that have Christmas in their names...I'm sure some will show up...soon..:) Keep them coming....get ready to add to your "Must Have List"...LOL

Well Greenthumbfish you have some Purdy blooms to look forward too...:) It's nice to see blooms on an ice out day...like today...probably will lose power...the ice is building up on the trees and wires...on most any untreated surface...so nothing better then seeing some Red before the outtage...LOL Ya'll keep posting the "REDS" Garden Pic's...more new folks will get to see what they "Really" look like...:)

You reminded me to put some of the oldies I had in Newberry on my wanted list. We had to close quickly on our house there and I left behind so many daylilies, amaryllis and black bamboo. I recognized some old friends, Dominic, Seductor, Chicago Apache, Charles Johnston. I bought some new ones at the end of the summer and will do photos next year. My reds are: Coquina Key, Cupid Calling, Francis of Assisi (love your photo!!), Drowning in Desire, Happy Apache, Her Majesty's Wizard, Lil Red Wagon, Lord of Lightening, Marauder, Potion for Passion, and some dark reds: Bohemia After Dark, Black Ambrosia, Bela Lugosi, Caribbean Frank League, Night Wings, Nosferatu, Vintage Bordeaux, Wait Until Dark. I can't wait until spring.

Where have I been that I missed this thread for a few days?? Great blooms, and I've seen quite a few that I'd love to get. I like red more every year. Here are a few of mine:

ANZAC, a nice old red. I just moved it to a better location this fall, so I hope it clumps up better this year.

Unknown, might be 'Autumn Red.' It makes a fantastic clump every year, very reliable and drought tolerant.

STOPLIGHT. Not sure if I'll keep it; I'm going to have to edit my daylilies because I'm running out of space, and this one just hasn't impressed me. It's also in the perfect location to be replaced by a nice tall Mahieu daylily. . . .

Marbree, thanks for posting the pic of Romeo Is Bleeding. Mine bloomed for the first time this summer and the flowers left something to be desired. I am happy to see your nice pic of a nice flower, I will maintain hope that mine will do that, too.

I'm glad you liked it. It was just the first flower open on that plant.
