Has anyone tried this for the moisture lovers?

I just got some rooted cuttings of varigated bella, lacunosa, and multiflora. I understand they do well planted in a loose, free-draining mix, setting in a tray with water; or in a self-watering pot. Couldn't you mix something up that holds enough moisture, yet is still loose enough to allow air? i.e., peat moss and plenty of orchid bark and/or perlite? I really prefer for all my plants to be able to go about a week without having to water or add water to a tray. I sometimes have to be gone and I can't seem to teach DH all the nuances of individual plants needs. He dumps water on them when he thinks about it or notices one appears dead, lol!

If this isn't possible, anyone know where I can get self-watering pots in the smaller sizes? I can only find the big pots or the small african violet pots.
