Hi Ben, welcome to Gardenweb. I have not grown from seeds or grown vegetables yet, however I'm sure you can grow at least tomatoes and cilantro in containers. You are lucky to have a southern exposure which will make things that need sun happy, although you will need to water frequently and probably provide some shade to keep your soil cool. I would poke holes in the bottom of the milk jugs for drainage. I personally only water from above. I assume you're only using the bottom half of your milk jugs as containers--you wouldn't want to magnify the sun's effect by leaving any of the top. Make sure you use a potting soil, not just garden soil or topsoil. You might want to check out the Garden Web Arizona board for more tips on keeping your soil cool and water in the AZ summer. Some of mine are in part shade, some are in full sun all day. I don't think it matters if it is morning or afternoon sun. If you have several fans of one kind, I would probably space them about 6-8 inches apart, because they will multiply and then you have to divide them in about 4-5 years. However, if you want to, you could put two or three of the same daylily in one hole to make them fuller right away. Sometimes I do this anyway because I'm just plain tired! Then water them. I use cypress mulch to retain moisture and keep the weeds down. Just don't plant the crown more than an inch or two below the ground. They like water, but not standing in it all the time. I actually have one now that I need to dig because it's in a spot that water tends to puddle. Not good. They are pretty tough cookies, I dug up some Chinese Scholar daylilies last year, left the clump on top of the soil, and this year they are coming out. Not exactly gung-ho, but they are surviving. I have seen pictures of South Seas and it is gorgeous. If you have room, you are not going to be satisfied with just three daylilies. Many people on this forum have hundreds if not more (I have about a hundred, counting my unknowns) and are a lot more experienced than I am at this. I am still learning but I hope I've helped some. hello fellow newbie i am also new here i just discovered this forum through shear dumb luck i have never been too much of an internet person really but have been eating super spicy foods since i was a kid and am addicted to chile peppers this is my first year growing chile peppers and i have some in the ground and some in pots, most i bought as seedlings from nurseries mostly boring stuff, jalapeno anaheim cayenne banana pimento, but i also have started habaneros tobascos thai fresno a bhut jolokia and a medusa from seeds i started this year w/ 18 and now im up to 67 a little ambitious for my first year probably, but as most of u here know chiles are an obsession. to all out there that post thanks for all the tips and advice i have enjoyed reading ur posts
