Less isn't more... MORE is more!
Comments (60)So here's how they look from further back... which is why I mistakenly said they looked fine. It's been chilly here (to me... not to anyone else) for the past couple days, so I've stayed in the house and done "house things." Today, I went out there and took these pics: And here we have close-ups of some examples of what I'm seeing happening. Also, I've noticed the new leaves seem stunted. They don't grow very big before they either stop growing or fall off. Misshapen leaves, 'browning out'... Hard to really tell in this picture, but the leaf in the center is sorta 'browning out.' If this was a fancy goldfish, I'd say this one has 'dropsy.' Some weird new-growth habit, among other things. More brown spots, plus white spots. At the edge of the pot, you can see the leaves are dying here and there. This is an attempt at a close-up of one of the worst ones. Small leaves that fall off if you even touch them. Another particularly affected plant. The first sign of a problem on a previously robust plant. I don't know what the problem is, but it's obviously contagious. I'm going to have to pull all of this out, dump the brand new potting media into the trash, wash and sterilize the pots, wait for some undetermined length of time, then replace it all. Super bummer. I only hope that whatever it is doesn't spread to things that AREN'T Coleus....See MoreWhy isn't akebia (chocolate vine) more popular?
Comments (10)When I was at One Green World one Fall day a couple of years ago,I saw it growing along some fences on the grounds. It's fruit looked strangely beautiful as it opened up.I had to ask one of the workers passing by what it was, because it was new to me. It was one of their Harvest Festival days and there was a room with different kinds of fruit to sample.Akebia was one of them. After trying it,I made a decision right away not to grow it.The flavor was odd, like what shane wrote about. Comments (27)Tree is common in the Seattle area, where multiple individuals may be seen on some sites. However, many specimens show drought effects here as summer wears on, with growth stopping, leaves starting to curl over and become tinted. Big part of appeal is shininess of leaves, as well as bark interest that develops with age. Depending on propagation method and perhaps sometimes other factors a giant bush with multiple trunks from near the ground or a tree with an single stem and elevated crown may be produced. First habit type has been associated with reproduction by rooting of side branches while those with more definite tree shapes can be seedlings. However, the vegetatively propagated (presumably grafted, but maybe not) 'Vanessa' cultivar has always had a tree shape when I have come across it....See MoreWhy isn't rockwool / mineral insulation more popular?
Comments (5)Other than use as a fire-safing material in commercial projects the only advantage I am aware of is that mineral wool is denser than fiberglass (but similar to cellulose) so it is often considered a better sound absorber. However, in normal residential use the difference is not detectable. If you want to upgrade your insulation from fiberglass batts at a reasonable cost, I would recommend sprayed dense-pack cellulose. If you are doing it yourself, mineral wool would have the advantage of easier installation....See Morebkay2000
