Hoyas outside? Lots of rain

Hi, I have 2 hoya plants - Hoya carnosa variegata and a hindu rope that have yet to go outside with the rest of my houseplants. This is the wettest June I've seen in a long time, 60 to 70 degrees and rain just about every day for the last 3 or 4 weeks. The few days it didn't rain were 80's and sunny which didn't make a lot of my houseplants outside very happy.

I've kept the hoya's inside because of this fearing they would rot. How do hoya's feel about rain and humidity outside? Normally where I live in PA there is a bit of humidity over the summer. I have no real way to cover any of the plants to prevent rain falling on them. They are all on a deck that faces east and gets a little dappled shade in the morning from trees. Thanks.

Hi Angel... You probably know that when it comes to rainwater, it seems plants can take a LOT more than tap water. I don't put most of my Hoyas outside not because of the rain, but because aphids become such a nuisance every summer at some point. But almost all my other plants (succulents) are outside all summer. And all but a few tolerate frequent rains. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you want your Hoyas outside (which is good for all plants, as I'm sure you know...), put them out and just keep an eye on them. If you see any signs of yellowing leaves, bring them back in. Otherwise, I have a feeling they will benefit from being out for the season.

Hi Angel,

Not an expert...I can only give you my experience with my few hoyas that I have hanging on my FL oak trees. I live in FL, so keep that in mind. Mine loves the rain and humidity this time of year...but I'm sure rain everyday for two or three weeks will cause a lot of problems for the plant. Eventually might lead to root rot if it doesn't get a chance to dry the roots in between... I have these hoyas in very fast draining soil, so it does help not keeping the soil soggy. But after a couple of rainy days, I let it dry out for a few days, bringing them in the house if I know that's its going to rain again...If it were mine, I wouldn't let it get that much rain, a lot of hoyas love humidity, but constant soggy soil is going to lead to trouble in my humble opinion.

OK, thanks everyone, you've put this 'worrywort's' mind at rest! Howard,my GH is very small and serves me only for the winter months. I can heat it when necessary, but cooling it doesn't work! Our summer temps are just too hot for the building I use, actually a glass house. I have an attached screen house where all the lower light plants stay during the summer and do well. But the high light guys I try to keep outside. Rain this time of year is very unusual for us, my rain barrels are overflowing :))). Since you've given me an OK, I'm going to put the rhyncostylis plants out too and let them enjoy all the rain. Happy growing. Sheila :)

Sorry Ines, I didn't realize that this had happened before on this forum. Not too often I hope. USPS priority does come most of the time within 2-3 days, but there are times that it doesn't (USPS doesn't guarantee the 2-3 day delivery - it's essentially first class mail for packages larger than an envelope). For example, a nice lady that lives quite literally 2 hours away sent me some cuttings priority mail, but tomorrow will be day 4 of my wait for what I hope will be cuttings that are still alive. I typically read the shipping and handling charges before I order. For example, there is an online nursery that has spectacular hoyas for sale, but I don't purchase from them because they have a minimum shipping and handling charge of $20.00 and each additional plant adds more cost to that S&H charge. I have a feeling (and I am NOT suggesting that this is anyone on this forum) that a lot of people don't pay attention to these charges until they have already commited to buy, then its often too late (especially on ebay). Nonetheless, the point of the people who started this thread is valid - there are certain expectations that we have that should be met when we make a purchase. Like you said before, we are dealing with live plants and all sorts of things can go wrong. So, as long as the dealer refunds the purchase price or provides a replacement if it was his/her fault, then everything is fair - regardless of future decisions to buy or sell to a particular person. My local tropical plant store has a three-day only return policy - if the plant drops dead on day four, I'm SOL. This three-day time limit came about because people would purchase a plant, not take care of it (or improperly care for it), then try and return it saying something was wrong with the plant two weeks later. The owners got tired of this and said "after three days its yours good bad ugly or dead". I do hope dealers take these kinds of discussions to heart, because it is people like us on these forums that purchase their product. It's always good to reassess costs and charges in an effort to find a way to reduce the cost to the consumer whenever possible. Ann

GG, looks like your buotii got the memo, mine didn't (shhhh!). I watered it well, it perked right back up and didn't even lose one leaf. Ok, maybe one, I don't remember. But if so, that's it, just one. Someone may have leaked the memo to sp. Tanna Island though. It looks great, but if you feel the leaves they are very limp. I feel like it will pull through, but it isn't responding as rapidly as the others. Fitchii already looks right as rain. I think it got too much light in the window though, it is pale yellow green. I was hoping for some red coloration. Guess that's not happening there. I'm glad everyone seems to be on the upswing out of the funk. The funk was not the good kind of funk. I agree, even the thought that my plants weren't doing well was enough for me to want to avoid them. The violets are looking pretty sad. As is my stephanotis. I think with care they will all recover though. I don't know if I can pull off the outside hoyas this year then. There isn't any real shade and no way to create it, really. It's a narrow space with a few large obstacles (ridiculously large AC unit, smoker/grill, trash can) and I can't block access to any of these items. Also, my landlord is promising a new fence this year (though he has promised that for the past three) and I don't really trust anyone he has working for him to treat my plants nicely. But we'll see. Maybe I can test out a few bits of hoyas, so that I won't lose the whole plant if it doesn't work out.

Dorothy, How wonderful is that? Five-and-a-half inches! Lucky you! I am so happy for you and know you must be thrilled. Here, things are not so good. : ) Thunder. Lightning. Dry lightning that sparked a couple of grass fires. Lots and lots of clouds, thunder and lightning. More clouds and higher humidity. Still mostly very hot. Highs around 97 to 101 and heat indexes a little higher, but the nights are cooling off into the mid-70s and that sure beats the 80s. Oh, and a little rain. I think we got six/one-hundredths of an inch in two separate rainshowers today. Got about thirteen/one-hundredths of an inch yesterday. If you add up all our rain for June, July and August to date, I think it is about 3" or so. For the 12 months from August 2007, when the current drought began, through July 2008, we are 16" to 17" below normal. At least today the county commissioners implemented a burn ban, and we really, really needed that. Now, if only enough rain would fall to make a burn ban unnecessary. This is not, by far, our driest year ever. And, I feel like I have become obsesessed by the desire to see some rain fall. Real rain. Rain, rain, rain. The longer we go without a good rain shower, the more obsessed I am with how badly we need one. I need to quit thinking about rain. Our local forecaster says that the weather pattern this week looks "really good" and we have a great chance of getting rain. And, it has fallen all around us. Carter County, just north of us, had some great rainshowers today. It just keeps missing us. Sooner or later, the rain will find us. When it does, I'll let y'all know! Dawn

Hi Denise and Puglvr1 - true about the bugs, with all this rain there will probably be billions of them this summer. I don't usually have a problem with the plants I have outside but I'm sure since I'm partial to these the bugs will be too. Yes, some of the plants are thriving in it, the orchids because they are on their sides at this point so no rain is staying in the pots or on the plants but they are truly loving the humidity. The spider plants are coming in for a few days to dry out, definately sad, everything else is kind of middle ground, except for of course the tomatoes which are ready to give up.
Bugs - rain - rot, I'd really love to see these hoyas grow up and bloom someday so I'll probably keep them inside unless I can figure out a way to give them a small "enclosed" area of their own :)
