Tell me (again) about your most powerhouse Reds

I actually was asked to buy a daylily for a gardener who I adore, but always teased me about wasting space on flowers rather than veggies, so I'm super excited and am trying to impress with a great red!!! (He casually mentioned that daylilies would be fine and I did a small dance) ;)

I was considering Al's Red Tower. (Davissons are aweome) but am afraid to spend most of the Christmas budget on one plant in case he doesn't love it.

Any ideas for a great red that just blooms and blooms and doesn't fade easily that's more in the$25 range?

How about HEARTS OF FIRE? DONT KNOW THE PRICE OF IT, but, its really pretty and reblooms, dont fade,big blooms.I am sure you will get a lot of ideas for a gorgeous red.

I agreen with Jean, HEARTS OF FIRE is a gorgeous red. But so is CHICAGO APACHE and I would recommend that one as it is a very inexpensive one and one of those tried and true older ones. I just love mine. But I love HEARTS OF FIRE also. I bought CHICAGAO APACHE on the Lily Auction afew years ago and I am trying to remember the price but I really think it was under $10.00. I know it was under $15.00 but I really think under $10.00. So very reasonable in price.

Oops! Sorry about those picture sizes. Photobucket software has changed since I last used it and somehow my photo size blew up. Next time I upload photos I will resize them. Bakemom: You have police reseeders? Sounds like you're growing cops! Cute typo. Anyway, since I started doing the organic things a few years ago, it certainly does seem fertile here. I get lots of volunteers now, unlike before, even though I mulch heavily twice a year. And things just seem to grow more and better. Four o'clocks? Though I love their evening scent, Just getting to be a pain, as seen above. Not too worried about the Japanese beetles, let 'em duke it out with the other bugs. And they start blooming late in the year and not during the day, so I just want to move on to something else. So many plants, so little time... I still have about 6 dud jugs, a few with only a few seedlings, and have already dumped just one or 2 with no sprouts and lots of green gunk. We're having a lot of rain (2-3 days) so maybe some of the slow-pokes will be pushed to sprout. Karen

I'm just glad you've found a reason to post pictures of these beautiful plants....even if it was to complain. Lol. but yeah, I'm with you on trying new things. Have I told you the story of the tied cat? Maybe you've heard it before? There's a similar one about cutting the ends off a roast, lol. That one is much shorter but not as amusing, I'd say.

Oh no SoFl, I bought Sugar Moon on your recommendation and from smelling it in your garden..... I tried it and I liked it so much that I bought another one. Both of them are staying healthy. I really don't understand why some of the ones that do well here don't necessary do well for you and vice versa.... Maybe it is my salt air or something. I think you said you got rid of Regatta, IT is probably one of my best performers. However, I thought I killed it. Someone told me we should cut back to a third, I think I must have misunderstood and it was to be cut back only a third. For the longest time it was touch and go but it pulled through. Even in this heat it is looking good, no chilli thrips. When it blooms it blooms!!! Another one that I have that is healthy (from disease) is Outta the Blue. However, it does get spider mites If I keep washing it off it is also a big bloomer for me. I also have Dark Desire that is happy - no disease or insects. However, it is super super thorny and not a favorite in the garden. Believe it or not it is an own root . I do love the flowers in a vase if I feel like being attacked by her. I always feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and the apple tree scene. Another one that I would claim that is pretty happy here in Florida is Distant Drums. She too is an own root. I figure it they do own root well here in Florida, it must be a toughie.

I read that too, but the plant and I weren't "on the same page." Never saw it again after first season in 6 A. But one season doesn't mean much about it's longevity in my experience.

Been extremely busy the past month or so and have not chimed in much but couldn't resist this one. My favorite red that I have is Doug's Red Mercedes. Very hardy, dormant variety with 6" blooms early to mid season; about 30".

I would second Hearts of Fire because I get a couple of re-blooms from it. Chicago Apache is another good one, and I also like Reason for Treason. Nice and reasonable ones all.

I guess it would rebloom down south but HEARTS OF FIRE dies not rebloom here on Long Island. And I have had it since 2007.

All above are good reds. Also:
'Forever Red'
'All American Chief'
'Ruby Spider'
'Red Volunteer'
and 'Just For Joanne', a new favorite,
and well within your price range.

I agree with both Hearts of Fire and Forever Red. A few more that I like are Acquire the Fire, Pinegarden Good Cheer, and Red Volunteer.

Hi,
RED SUSPENDERS is a long time favorite, and a perfect example of the pinched crispate form. It doesn't grow on the best "real estate" here but still is a great performer.

And you might consider a small flower - we don't always have to go with full flowered large blooms! John Kinnebrew Jr's LIL' RED WAGON is a small flower ( about 3.5") but this is a wonderful over all garden plant. It has high bud count and can easily have 8-10 blooms open on a given day.

My overall favorite red for years has been BETTY FORD.

My best performing red last year was -

It's a beauty...reliable rebloom...22 buds...up to 5 way branching...inexpensive...rust resistant...a favorite in my garden.

If your "he" likes big as well as red, I'd go with Ed's recommendations of RUBY SPIDER or ALL AMERICAN CHIEF, both beyond showy. I'd like to add two more to the already-excellent choices above: PASSION FOR RED and ROOTEN TOOTEN RED, both bright and sunfast in our brutal summers.

BETTY FORD is a stunner. I grow it also and it is a really, really beautiful daylily. So is LIL' RED WAGON.
