Depending on if it will be dry most of the time & wet just a few weeks of the year or if it will be moist during the growing season... You might be able to direct some of that water to a channel & plant on the higher sides of it to prevent drowning plants during the high water times. What grows well for me in the shaded moist woodland: groundcovers: Ajuga reptans, Golden Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia), spotted dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) grass like foliage: Acorus (sweet flag), various Carex like 'Ice Dance', Iris (I. foetidissima, Japanese Iris), common orange daylily Hosta Astilbe Aruncus (goatsbeard) Japanese anemone - fall bloomer that tolerates part shade Tradescantia (spiderwort) Mimulus (monkeyflower) Try looking at this swale garden creation with pics (uses rock to help control water & fill space) http://herselfshoustongarden.com/2007/01/swale-garden.html Here is a link that might be useful: bog plants

Here are the promised pictures of the things moved- Lets start by showing the two shrubs moved. Fortunately they are not large shrubs but the guys had to do some work on the hill before they got planted. Now since the shrubs were out of the planter, two roses were moved in. Showing a longer view of the area of the front yard. The roses are the lighter colored ones in the second of the half round planters. Seeing it all from another view. A big empty spot in my sidyard rose garden from those roses that moved out front. And now here is the rose moved into the rear of the garage. Poor thing was looking the worst of everything that was moved. And here is the bigger empty spot were both Carefree Delight and the Gift used to be in my sideyard. They came even further out from those landscape blocks just put there now. You can see the dirt areas were things were dug up. It looks quite different along that area of the yard as when you stood here you used to see those big roses. Closeup of the area updtsairs with the moved Carefree Delight. The bigger projects of the needed moves are my approx 5 foot tall Bonica shrub rose that is going to go in the third of the planter boxes in the front yard. That would be directly in back of the two Charles Aznavour roses there now. The next thing planned is to move my two Flower Carpet Appleblossom Roses, one into the back yard and the other repositioned from were it is now. They are not very tall but they spread out alot. They big deal will be tying them up and then lifting the spreading canes so they they can be dug because as they are now, you could not put a shovel thru them.

sorry... I don't know for sure... but I'd rather be careful. The two situations are not analagous. Water off a roof is, by its nature, only in contact with the outside of the shingles - the impregnated side - and for a short period of time. The use of roofing material on the ground, with constant contact with dirt and moisture over long periods of time isn't the same thing. I know that even when a street is very old, on a hot day I can smell the petroleum products outgassing. I know that we used to just dump our old engine oil and now we know it is a serious contaminant... I don't know of any studies proving any contamination that could get into food products... but for years various other chemicals were also allowed in food and considered harmless - until we found out they are probably causing cancer. So... I use old roofing materials - but I don't use them around food crops.

The path is gorgeous -- as are all your wonderful projects! And thanks for letting us know how you are doing after surgery. Keep us posted. It's wonderful how the body will heal after major surgery and positive thoughts. I'm sure happy with the new knee I got a year ago. And Bob, my mulch guy, is happy not having to do the watering although he was a sweet heart and did the best he could when he had to do it :-)
