I haven't ordered from Hosta Patch but those look like nice plants. Bob Solberg sends husky rooted plants, as does NGP, haven't ordered from the other ones mentioned. For future reference Char if you haven't already tried Hallson Perennials they also send really nice plants, very well rooted.
You can probably leave them soaking overnight, I don't think I would do it for more than a day though.

THEY ALL NEED TO BE OUT OF THE GLASSES ....though they love water.. they are not water plants ...

run and buy some potting soil .. dampen it ... and stick them all in one thingee ... i miss the old dish pans ....

and stick them in the garage .... they will prefer the cool rather than the hot house ...

if an extreme freeze is on the horizon .. move them into the house for the night and back out in the morn ... a garage is at least a zone or 2 warmer than your garden zone ...

don't baby them to your detriment .... we kill more things with too much love than with benign neglect .... ken

They should be fine overnight but like ken said get them in dirt as soon as you can. Now that you dove in to mail order you will probably need a holding place. I have two large pots that i use. They are filled with a nice potting soil and i put the hostas right in when i get them and plant them as soon as i get around to it (usually less then 2 weeks depending on weather)

here is a pic of one of my holding pots last spring - it is on wheels so i can move it in or out of my garage as needed

KEN, No worries...I thought I read somewhere that you should soak bareroot plants for a bit when they arrive.

I grabbed a bag of potting soil from under the deck, moistened the soil and have them planted already. The pot is on a dolly already so I can wheel them out of my attached garage during the day until I get around to getting them in the ground.

shade_tolerant: Hallsons is next on my list to try. Do they have a spring sale coming up?

Char when did you place your order with Hosta Patch?
I placed mine on Feb. 1. Just kind of wondering if I should
be expecting mine soon too.

Janet, I placed the order online on Feb. 20 and asked that they be shipped no earlier than mid-May. They just didn't understand that and responded that they'd get them to me as soon as they could...late April to early May. That was back in Feb. I would bet you'll be receiving your order soon unless there's an issue with part of your order.

No, I wasn't notified that they had shipped and was totally surprised today when I got it already. I was more surprised than I should have been, however, given our e-mail exchange (see above).

All in all, I'm pretty happy, given the wonderful root systems.

Don't be a bit concerned about the size of the leaves, they're right in line with what's coming up in my garden right now, and Hosta Patch is a just a few miles from me. It's the size of the roots that matter and you've got all good husky ones. Beautiful!

I know Ken is right, however a couple orders I received last year were in water for up to three days and looked great when planted...after all, they're hosta!

As long as the roots are in the water they can stay in the glasses for months,as long as you change the water occassionally. So no problem there. As far as leaf size, those are bigger than whats in most of our gardens right now they just haven't fully come out of dormancy, it's the roots that matter.
At this time of year if they grow there hostas in the ground thats pretty much what your going to expect from just about every nursery that does it this way.
Bigger hostas this time of year means greenhouse.

Nice looking roots, and like everyone said, the leaves are in line with what size they should be right now considering the location of the nursery. I can tell you from my own experience last year (I ordered tons of mail ordered hostas last year) that I left some in cups of water for almost a full week before planting, and had no problems with any of them. Perhaps others have had issues with the cups of water, but my hostas were all just fine.

I've ordered from Hosta Patch and have always received plants just like those -- lots of roots -- that's what you want. They turned out to be gorgeous. (All blues).

listen up ..... there are various levels of experts here ....

i know most of you don't need me to tell you not to leave them in water for a week .. or until you can plant them outside ...

but just in case there is that newbie who is getting their first mail order ever... it is imperative for them to understand that a soak is one thing... growing it like a water lily is another ...

these days most stock is TC liners grown out.. the crown is never cut ... when i started you might get actual divisions with fresh cuts .... and that type of stock can rot if left in too much water for too long ...

my point is simply that the audience knowledge level varies ... so dont take offense if you feel i am taking down to you when i simplify it all for others ... i just cant remember all 250 of your aliases ... its a guy thing.. lol ....
