Getting back on that hosta wagon.

I have had hostas for over 20 years, have posted many times thru the years but have been out of commmision the last couple of years do to aging family members and the need for two foot surgeries.
I am happy to announce that I am back at it and gardening full force this spring with ankles that no long antagonize me with heel pain from heel spurs.... (been a nurse toooooo many years).
My goodness it feels great to get out and see my plants emerging. It is astounding the number of plant labels that are missing even using the pawpaw stakes and labels. Will have to drag out my master lists and do a search and find and label marathon as they emerge and I can ID them.
On a great note, my husband has decided that the years and years of wood chip mulch as broken down into 6 inches or more of pure compost so we are scooping it off the walkways and top dressing all the beds and hostas. Many hostas have heaved a bit with their hairy eyes showing, so I am hitting those up extra well.

Welcome back, Flowerchild! It's always great to add another long term hosta-grower to the conversation.

While you were out of commission, were your hosta growing all by themselves? Wowza, you must have some pretty big plants by now. Cannot wait to see pictures of your garden.

Don, I'm pretty sure that Rhino Hide from Naylor had two eyes. It was bare root of course, and if it had any dormant eyes, I was ignorant of the fact. Many times with Naylor they ship two separate eyes as a single order, and that is probably the case with their Rhino Hide. I wrote "slow" on the tag because Don Rawson, its originator, mentioned once that it might be a little slow in getting established. However, I am about to cross that off the tag! Nothing slow when its first year really planted it brings about 8 eyes. I'm waiting to see the Rhino Hide OS from Don Rawson himself come forth in a week or so, it was dormant when it reached me last fall. One of my favorite hosta with a leaf easily recognizable from 10 feet at LEAST! I restrained myself about buying it, thinking it would not like our hot weather. But other than keeping him in good light but a shady location, I have not noticed any hesitation about growing nicely.

You must have some Lancifolia or Undulata in there. If there is a viable piece of crown material in the soil they will regenerate. If you till them without getting the crown material out it won't matter. You could sift the soil to get all the white crown material out. Or a few drops (notice I said drops not spray) of Round Up will kill em. Steve

Thanks everyone. Moc, I've learned how to use my Navi that is built into my vehicle to avoid expressways! We both have seen Niagara Falls before and it was so crowded. My DH was not being helpful and kept telling me to "turn here" onto the bridge to Canada. We didn't have papers to enter back into the USA, so I was getting stressed out, the hosta farms were much more relaxing. Phil, does your Summer Fragrance bloom? They are supposed to be super fragrant. I was up in Blairsville, Georgia for 5 days helping my son pack his house up for their move to Vermont. You sure do live in a beautiful part of the country Phil. I really wanted to stop by and see your gardens, but didn't have a minute free. I still have another child in the south and look forward to visiting your gardens next season. But oh my, the giant bees, lizards, and other creatures were way too much for me! Gesila

just take some masking tape.. and tape up the green ones.. so you can work near them.. then when the turn to mush.. you can just grab the whole and toss it ... make them look like a bunch of celery ... though you can probably do it.. they are still storing energy... for next springs flush ... in theory.. you can spread disease by going plant to plant ... so i usually wait.. until after the first freeze.. when the whole can be grabbed and simply pulled off.. thereby avoiding the hole tool cleaning issue ... as i recall you only have a few.. so i would not worry too much about the whole disease issue ... ken
