Surprise Scapes

Walking the garden today I see strong rebloom scapes coming up on CELEBRATION OF ANGLES and Paul Owen seedling #079. Also another rebloom scape coming on FINIAL DESTINATION which had its last flower on the currently blooming scape today. I have lost track of the number of reblooms I have had on FINAL DESTINATION. Plus the really weird thing is that its a late blooming daylily so its not as if it started up really early in order to get all that rebloom in. Hurray for Emmerich intros!

I also had two flowers today on VT FALL PINK MELON. Those look to be the last on the scape.

Of course nothing will come of those rebloom scapes as its too late for them to bloom. We had a week of rain so I figgure that had something to do with it. Its in the 50s during the day but no freeze at night yet as my impatients, hanging baskets, petunias and marigolds are still going strong.

There are years we had had snow (not much snow) by Thanksgiving but many years we stay in Fall with things growing until mid December. I think it was two years ago when we had a very warm Fall and the roses bloomed and bloomed and bloomed (like they are doing now) until mid January, it was warm and no freezes. Then it turned bitter cold at the end of January and the cold stayed for at least 6 weeks that year.

Great to hear your getting reblooms. Too bad though you think they won't open. But then, you just never know.

Most years we have just a dusting of snow on the ground if even that around Thanksgiving. It's been cold, warm, cold, warm. Flurries but nothing is sticking to the ground here. Too warm yet.
The only thing blooming here is my two Christmas Cactus plants.:-).

You're lucky, Rita! Are you going to let them go to bloom? I had to put a couple out of their misery, I could barely look at them fighting to open here.

We had a very little bit of snow here on Sunday which lasted all of 15 mins & lots of rain today. I was talking to a friend on the phone & he had sleet just 15 mins west of me. Living so close to lake Michigan really keeps a lot of that away I guess. Sunday's weather put the cabosh on my Rudbeckia, Gallardia & 4 of my clematis that were still blooming. It's official...winter is a coming!

I've done a slapdash looking for scapes. I have one scape that is loaded with buds MYSTIC MARINER, I can't take credit for it, it is a gift from my daughter. I am very eager to see the flowers, a picture I saw was very nice. My plants are also growing huge and cuddling up to each other--this ought to be some bloom season. Kay/phal

Hi, Rita! *waves* I know.. I only snapped them off if they looked bent or like they were getting yellow.. but it is hard.. I'm always so curious to see what things look like, and last year the only time I was able to go on family vacation was when about 10 of my new daylily plants bloomed with just one tiny scape so by the time we returned, they were DONE, so I have no idea what some of my stuff looks like and I can't WAIT!!!

Polymerous, I have spent some time on the computer trying to make sure of the info I have on Miss Victoria. The reason you won't find it on the AHS database is that it's from England, hybridized by the Blooms of Bressingham. They have done a series of "Lady" daylilies, including Miss Victoria and Miss Amelia--which we have--and others like Lady Lucille, Lady Rose, etc. To look these up, search Daylilies By Blooms Of Bressingham. I thought I knew the Blooms were the hybridizers, but I wanted to be sure. Miss Victoria is a diploid, and generally, the scape height and bloom size is correct as you have it listed. I don't know just how often it polys, but today I found a bloom with four petals and three sepals. We received this plant as a bonus from Oakes Daylilies several years ago. They sell some of the Bressingham hybrids. I hope this helps you out. Maximus and Nancy, "B.T. Lookalike" was a passalong plant that came from Jack Carpenter originally. So far as I know, it is a diploid because I tried crossing it with Mom's Seedling both ways--as pod and as pollen--and nothing took. Mom's a tet, so naturally I decided B.T Lookalike was a dip. Of course, now I know sometimes these crosses won't take because condition aren't right. Whatever it is, it is doing wonderfully well, and it also produces proliferations. That is great avedon. reblooms is wonderful and that bloomk on siloan double classic is beautiful.i have 2 more rebloom scapes on CONDILLA, but dont see any no where else.The temp dropped down to 64 here last night, felt great after these 100 plus days. jean

Hooray for your scapes, whether you get to see them open or not. If the plants aren't really established, hopefully they will do it again next year, only earlier!

I know how strong a focus you have had on choosing plants that will rebloom for you, so am happy for you to see a success!

My Celebration of Angels rebloomed like crazy for me in early October, and has just put up two more scapes. Sounds like our temps are very similar right now, but my blooms just haven't been able to open for the last several weeks. I have finally started cutting the scapes when they get close to opening, and bringing them inside. The color isn't as great, but I have had at least several blooms from each scape open for me in my kitchen window. One was a first bloom on one of my seedlings, so at least I got to get a hint of an idea of what it is going to look like.

Most years I too have been able to pick rose boquets (kind of shabby ones, but they were fresh flowers from the gardens!) for the table for Thanksgiving, and often for Christmas. We really don't get much cold until January, if at all. The amount of rain tends to melt anything blooming however. Most of my annuals have melted globby flowers on them at this point... nothing like the still pretty ones in your latest pics.

It's always so sad to see the garden go to bed........

Julie- I had not thought about it the way you put it, that the plants are not yet really established and maybe the rebloom would be earlier next year. I like that idea and hope that turns out to be true.

Its raining hard again today with more days of rain prior to this again. If the weather stays like this who knows. This much and this many days of constant rain is unusual for us.

Well, a hard freeze overnight last night. Birdbaths stayed frozen solid all day. Those poor daylily scapes froze :-((

I can commiserate with you, as we had a hard freeze last night also. I haven't even looked at all the scapes that were trying to bloom...too depressing. Ah well, spring will get here.
