H. Heatwave sun tolerance

Bought H. Heatwave last year and it burned. But I attributed this to the fact that I received it mailorder as a fully leafed out bare root and that it had therefore problems acclimatising.

Since it is said to have blue/green edges I am wondering if it would prefer to be in more shade.

Experience anyone?

BY NO MEANS am I anything close to expert... but...

my houseplants "burn" if i just place them outside without an acclimation process. they need to slowly build up the SPF (or whatever it's called in plants) on the leaves.

I think if hostas leafed out in shade and were then moved to sun it might have a similar effect, no?

if the plants were grown in a greenhouse.. they were in deep shade .. either from the plastic or from shade cloth ...

they needed .. to be.. keyword.. 'hardened off' to the new light ... plus all the other complications of bare rooting and shipping

frankly ... unless they are in all day sun.. i would wait to see how they do coming up naturally in your yard ...

all sun will do to a blue.. is eventually melt off the wax that keeps it blue.. late in the season ...

dont know where you are mue.. so i cant go any further.. if you are down south.. my whole answer might change

FWIW, this is off a stone patio (okay, concrete landscaping bricks :) ). It tends to be pretty hot even in the morning. No grass there to cool down ambient temperatures.

heuchera 'caramel' not so sun tolerant for me

I have two Caramel Heuchera in full sun. Both are doing fine in Zone 5 Michigan in clay soil which is moisture retentive. Three Peach Flambe are on the other side of the bench, also around a Mops Mugo Pine (max size listed as 2 ft by 2 ft). These are also in full sun and do very well, but have not grown as fast has Caramel for me. I just posted this picture in another thread yesterday, so I apologize, but this is the only picture I have of Caramel that shows its siting. Although the camera sort of squashes things closer together, there is nothing except the small 18 inch tall heucheras in the middle to block the sun. They are on the outside edge of the circular part of a peninsula bed that juts out more than 10 ft from the dwarf Hawthorn tree, well outside its shade line & in the most open part of the yard. Perhaps the clay soil is the thing that holds enough water to keep them growing well in lots of sun, since zone 7 Long Island sun shouldn't be all that more intense than mine.

some of the ecosystem restoration and remediation projects in the US and elsewhere involve semi-natural and even formal row planting of trees. I'd say there's both scientific and observational evidence out there that trees and other plants, when dense enough, benefit the water system significantly a good example is how the state of MD requires any new construction to build in stormwater systems / habitat offsets that appear to include ponds, appropriate native tree planting and other native shrubs and grasses. I lived up there quite a while, and the difference between there and the free-for-all, socialized cost private development in Alabama is simply amazing. Even a quick t-storm here fills the streams with red clay silt from construction sites and overwhelms water systems. (It does not help that they let farms pull drainage ditches from their field into the county storm water evacuation system that we paid for, sad to see it happen, especially when the extra water caves in the side of the road)

1818 Federal, size is caused by a combination of factors: how happy the plant is in its setting, how old the plant is, and genetics. I don't think that full sun in VA would be a good idea. It sounds like its current eastern exposure is probably good. I know that all along the east coast weather has played a part for the last few years in setting back big-leaf/macrophylla hydrangeas, with late frosts damaging opening buds or particularly severe winter temperatures killing back branches to the ground. I don't know if you noticed any type of cold damage, but this is one possibility. Did you get bloom? If so, was it in spring or later in the season? If yours is a relatively young plant, you won't find it putting on a lot of above ground growth in the first year or two as it is growing roots to support future above ground growth. Do you know the variety you have? Was it grown from a cutting of your grandmother's hydrangea? Current fashion in plants has the breeders trying to create smaller plants as many homes have relatively small yards that folks want to use for a multitude of purposes, and so often they are looking for smaller plants. So there are several H. macrophylla that are bred to be in the 2'-3' range, where your grandmother's may well have been something like Nikko Blue that can get to 6' tall and wide. If during the growing season your hydrangea is blooming and the shrub's leaves look happy (not a yellowish color or droopy) I wouldn't move it.

Uuuuh I'm in Norway.
Bought 35 hosta on mail order from Marco Fransen last year. Amazing root systems on them but was a little unprepared for how leafed out and floppy they would be contra how far our season had come along.

Heat Wave was the one hosta that did most badly aclimatising. I just wrote it off as hosta that I wasn't going to get along with until today when I went out and counted that it has come up with 10 eyes!!!! Did a little hosta dance in excitement!! and thought maybe I should move it.

It is going to be real fun seeing all Marcos hosta come up this year since they were in such a floppy state last year.

I envy you all being able to go just down the road to buy exciting hosta. My little investment last year entailed DHL and a costly health certficate to get them thru customs. (but we were 4 hosta enthusiasts that pooled our order)

NORWAY.. that's just about the last thing i considered.. lol ...

if my recollection of the globe is sufficient.. you are relatively so far north.. that you could most likely grow them in full sun ... since you are so much closer to the north pole ... how about some of you MN peeps agree ....

most likely.. all your problems were shipping based ..

i would give it this summer to see how it does.. and if it burns again.. move it in late summer ...

hosta are ONLY shade tolerant.. they are much more vigorous in full sun.. even if they burn or get ugly ..

so grow your babe in sun this year.. get a bigger plant faster...

and move it in early fall if it burns again ..

ps: most hosta in england are also full sun ... i and i have to think you are at least as north as they are ...
