My first daylily win on the LA

I have been bidding on Miss Annie Belle for quite a while and finally won one. I thought it would be really cool to grow this daylily since my name is Ann Bell. This is the hybridizer's (Frank Smith)picture.

Looking good and what a great selection! Here is hoping you get blooms and can post pics. Are you planting already? I received an order on Saturday....SURPRISE,SURPRISE...as I thought it was coming in early May from Westbourne. Probably my own fault. They are all soaking in empty plastic coffee containers (I buy the big size coffee containers with the handle. Saved them up all winter ;-) ). Have to say that alot of the fans are kinda yellow and not a nice green coloring. Hope it is just a temporary thing and they grow out of it. With all this rain, I don't think I can plant in the ground till later this week when things start to dry out a bit. I have another order I got but I knew it was coming and already planted it last week in 2 large pots (7 fans he sent). Trying WORTH IT ALL. And to end the day, I got notifications from Gaskins today that an order I placed for CITRIX did not make it through the 'tough' winter they had and can't ship. Refunded my money. Oh well, probably a good thing after all and now I know that one can't make it here. Julia

Jake: hmmmmm, looks like your not posting the "HTML" code and therefore no pics are showing. :-(. This site requires the HTML code otherwise you can't post a pic. Also when you do the preview BEFORE you hit submit,you should see your photos appear. If they do not show and only the codes are showing, then there is a problem. Very nice blog page and pictures. We had our show in Augusta last Saturday too. Flower entries were down this year with a lot more emphasis on the design portion (arrangements). I think it also has a lot to do with the very hot temperatures this last week (100 +/- 2 every day since last Monday), no rain, and watering restrictions. My garden is starting to dry up! As for Enchanting Esmerelda, it is a very bright pink with a little lighter eye zone. I must admit that mine didn't look quite right last week either in the heat - - even early in the morning it was looking a little 'fried.' Here is a picture of what it looked like last year when things were a little more normal. Now that you have been to a show, you should plan to enter some flowers next year. Just don't be too certain which ones you want to enter because it all depends on what is blooming on that particular morning and which scape you are willing to sacrifice. Another thing you might want to try is being a clerk for the judging. That way, you can hear all the comments on each flower and learn what the judges are looking for. Sometimes it is not the prettiest flower that wins, but the one that has been "groomed" to be the best. Besides, we all have opinions on what is prettiest - and so do the judges. They are trained to look at each entry as an individual item they are judging against standards, not on how much they like a certain flower or color. Marea, I think you will see a lot sooner bloom than I will. Julia, Don't despair, this is supposed to be a mid-season bloomer. The only reason it has bloomed so soon for me is that it started out the first part of its spring in a southern state. I planted this clump on May 13 and it set scapes w/in a couple weeks. Other than this transplant, around here the only thing showing its face is Stella. And my Stellas aren't blooming because I moved them too late last fall so they suffered a lot of winter damage. Here is what I have showing scapes: This first group is all new to me this spring- Dream Legacy Roses In Snow Scaramouche Persian Pattern Come Spring Bluegrass Strawberry Taffy Royal Kaleidoscope Wild Horses Cleopatra's Jewel These have been in my garden for several years: h. 'fulva europa' A NOID gold- it is more orange tone & smaller flowers than Stella plus later season & recurves. I hope to post pictures & find a name this year.

ngraham, RUNNNN RUNNNN away from LA as fast as you can it is very addicting. My favorite seller is "rondas", she always sends great looking fans and a few extras. I won some from her for next spring when I dont really need any till I make another bed.

Congrulations on your win. But as Jill said" Run, run, run while you still have a home and food to eat. Of course, you can eat dls but why pay that much for them then eat um? I do spend some time on there and lost the last bid I had so I am just hanging out. I promised myself I wouldn't buy anymore for at least 6 months. If I break my promise, I will forgive me though after all, it is an addiction and it's really hard to break the habit. I love Frank Smith's daylilies...Ellie

LOL, Jill. In my case it could be way too true, I'm very easily addicted, especially when I look to see what you are all buying there. I lost lots of plants this year to the drought, so sad. The upside of that though-I will have spots for new daylilies now. But not til spring so I know just how much space I will have. Hope I find some as nice then as Miss Annie Belle. If Frank Smith's daylilies are all this nice, I should start focussing on hybridizers I like...

Ann, what a beautiful daylily! Congratulations.

I, too, have no more room and promised myself I wouldn't add any more unless it was either a Munson or a Hanson. So of course, every must-have Munson and Hanson hit the Lily Auction and I now have 41 coming with some bids still pending. I might try my hand at selling some on the Auction this Spring, just to make a little room.

That is a lovely daylily. Congrats on the win. I am a big fan of the Lily Auction. It has made it possible for me to obtain many newer daylilies that I otherwise would not be able to afford.

OMGosh, I just read a post a couple days ago about the LA and I can't get away from it. Fortunately for my pocket book the admin is fussing with getting me registered..LOL

Am I going to get myself into trouble with that site!
