First Daylily to open in my garden!

Today was that magical moment when the very first DL, from those ordered and dreamed about all winter, chose to start the season here. It was Margo Reed's 'BROWN WITCH' and I nearly missed it as I didn't even go out to check that part of the garden until noon. Good thing it was one of my "work from home" days so I had opportunity to take a photo.

They're in Louisiana, and my impression is that they sell many of the newest and best daylilies that do well in the south. En fait, you can order en francais si vous voulez. :)Check them out: I'm sure you'll find more daylilies you want than you have room for. :) BTW, don't operate on the assumption that you want only evergreens. The evergreen/dormant distinction is a good first start to figuring out whether a daylily will thrive in a particular region, but you should also bear in mind that some dormants are tender, and some evergreens are hardy. Best bet = checking with sellers and display gardens in your area to see whether they successfully grow something that catches your eye.

Glad you are all enjoying these. I know I just love to view everyone's pictures even when I can't keep up to post replies...keep em coming everyone! Debra, The cats were there and a portion of her sales went to support a local charity for a spay/neuter program for stray cats. But, darn it, my camera batteries ran out of juice before I got done with daylilies or I'd have taken some photos of the cats too. It was a tough choice to make...cats vs daylilies... LOL

Nice to see you get started although it sounds like you may be dodging raindrops to get photos! My neighbor has seen deer between our houses so I sprayed Bobbex last week. We have had two huge rains since so I may need to refresh! I remember your previous photo of all your Bounce strips blowing in the breeze! I saw on one nursery site where they use Vick’s Vapor Rub dotted throughout the garden. I have not tried that but they indicated it lasted through several rains.

Great Photography! The blurry bloom in the background (plus all the green) really sets off the foreground bloom!

Thank you all for your comments. LOL, I lost this post and had to get help from the admin to find it again.

I too hope too share many more photos. I see more scapes coming and the anticipation is killing me :)I started photographing in gardens when I was 11 or 12 yrs old. Never thought I'd eventually find such a wonderful use for it. Still loving it at (ahem)...40 something...

Can you believe that color saturation and it was dead on noon in hot sun? What a great subject Margo Reed has given me to photograph!

No, this is my first one of the 'witches'. Has me thinking about getting the others though...

....that is if I still have room after I plant all the seedlings (not only daylily but iris, peony, asiatic lilies too) I've been playing with :)

Great flower. Who would have thought a brown color would look so "rich". Nice.

I've just started this year doing Tall Bearded Iris and Cannas along with daylilies. Peonies are definitely a keeper and ours are just at peak bloom now along with many other plants in the garden. But no daylily blooms yet. Got some with scapes but nothing has opened yet : -(.

Marea, I think you will see a lot sooner bloom than I will.

Don't despair, this is supposed to be a mid-season bloomer. The only reason it has bloomed so soon for me is that it started out the first part of its spring in a southern state. I planted this clump on May 13 and it set scapes w/in a couple weeks. Other than this transplant, around here the only thing showing its face is Stella. And my Stellas aren't blooming because I moved them too late last fall so they suffered a lot of winter damage.
