Best Toothy Cultivars of 2010

As most of you know, I really love the toothy edges. What were your best performing toohy cultivars of last season?

1. ROBES FOR THE QUEEN, a Salter, was a real standout in my garden. Its flowers had the most consistent white, toothy edge on both petals and sepals. The flowers were rarely splotched, and it bloomed and rebloomed well. This was the first year Robes failed to set pods for me. The temps were just too hot everyday.

2. CRETACEOUS CRUNCH by Lambertson had enormously large teeth and was impressive at clump strength. Good bud count, but not as good as the previous season, and a bit of instant rebloom. This one is always a poor pod setter for me, but the pollen is fertile.

3. ROARING RAPIDS by Dan Hansen had nice bud count and was a pod hussy despite the blazing hot temps.

Well, I don't know yet how well they will perform. BUT, as for thier toothiness, they were great! I planted Lemon Fringed Pastel, Ruffled Strawberry Parfait and Angelique Fringes and they had some overbite...loved 'em. I was surprised at the "tooth" level the first year.

Our plants which were winter protected by covering with about 4 inches of soil, and came through without any damage from our minus 11 degrees Fahrenheit winter were Ronde de Bordeaux, Marseilles Black VS, Sal's Corleone, Violetta, Brooklyn White, and Hardy Hartford. Hardy Hartford and Marseilles Black VS had no damage what so ever. Kathleen's Black, and Danny's Delight had the most damage. The damage that Danny's delight suffered really surprised me. For us Hardy Hartford has proven to be one of our most cold hardy. The original plant took minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit in Hartford without winter protection, and was around eight feet when I took cuttings in March. Bob

I LOVE TEETH!!! The more the merrier! That is one look I will never tire of in a dl! I was so happy to read in your comments in the trendy dl thread that Lambertson is working on getting more colors. I want to see a neon pink dl with neon green teeth! And make that HUGE teeth! I was just recently asked 'how do you describe teeth to a nondaylily person?' I describe it as taking a pinking shears & cutting all around the tepals. Good analysis? How do you explain it?

Beachlily - Thanks for sharing your bud counts. It's interesting to see bud counts from someone in Florida. I guess I expected you all would have bud counts in 40-70s like Stamile. It's good to know Magnificent Hummingbird does well for somebody. It only has 8-12 buds per scape here. I'm thinking about moving it next year to a different location. The scapes are still very short and the flowers are much smaller than they should be. There may be tree roots interfering with mine. Nancy Graham and all - I happened to count the bud scars on My Melinda the other day. Surprise, surprise! She was building buds on theose impressive branches. She ended up having 36-38 buds per scape. That sends her to Number 2 on my Bud King list. An oldie but goodie in the bud count department! I didn't even photograph that one this season. Woo woo to LADY WU. I've been in love with every one of David's newer doubles the few times I've seen them in gardens. When I see pics like the one of your LADY WU, I'm tempted to try a few of them. I have a really nice microclimate in a bed next to the house, and I think they might do pretty well there. I hadn't realized that LAST SNOWFLAKE is supposed to be a slow increaser. I don't have too many fans of it, but I thought that's because I'd sited it in a bed that's a little too hot and dry. As an experiment, I may move it this fall to a better spot & see how it does going forward. I now want both STEALTH BOMBER and SWEET PRAIRIE WIND. I really like that kind of color combo!

Dani - Your Klehm and Reckamp-Klehm toothies did have a lot of bite for their first season in your garden. All three of those beauties. My Ruffled Strawberry Parfait did not perform well this year. I'm still growing it in a pot, and it only had 7 buds. I must get it in the ground next spring, because I know having it in a pot so long has diminished its vigor.

4. My 4th best toothy performer was Kinnebrew's SPACECOAST SHARP TOOTH, which bloomed and rebloomed very well.

5. BACK SCRATCHER - This one multiplies like crazy, so it had great clump appeal last season. Although the teeth do not go all the way around the petals, they add a lot of oranmental appeal to the flowers. This one set pods on 99 degree days.

6. CHARLIE, a Reckamp-Klehm, kept the teeth flashing into the late season. It had a decent bud count, but no rebloom this year.

7. ALIQUIPPA by Julia Baxter had a moderate number of buds and an equisite toothy edge.

8. WINTER'S ANGEL, a Salter, had glorious teeth and tendrils. This is another I need to get out of the pot and into the ground for better performance next year.

Guess I haven't gone out of my way to buy the "toothy" ones, in fact I got rid of Mort Morss this spring because it had on again- off again years! I do have a couple that I really like. FRINGY is my favorite here:

I also like FANTASTIC FRINGE:

One that really captivated me this past summer is from an unknown hybridizer in our Region (Reg.3).The thing which blew me away on this was that it had so many teeth on the sepals. It is out of Forestlake Ragamuffin. This is 'Breck's Smile.'

What do you think of that? I'm going to see if he has any for sale.

I don't have any with teeth, although if I remember right, Pretty Gaudy looked rather toothy on its rebloom. As close as it gets for me. Some really pretty ones here, I really love Robes for the Queen & Breck's Smile. BAckscratcher is one I've always admired.

BASS GIBSON does really, really well for me and always shows lots of teeth. The other best toothy one in my garden is Korth's ROCKS CRY OUT.

Wow, these are really pretty, I need some, I can't believe I really don't have any really toothy ones. I like Fringy and Winter's Angel and Roaring Rapids. Actually all of them, looks like a lot of pretty ones.

Floota - Both Fringy and Fantastic Fringe are lovely. Thanks for sharing Breck's Smile with us. It's interesting that the petals have gold teeth and the sepals have white. Very unique!

These photos are so clear and bright, it looks like I can almost reach out and touch them.They are all just beautiful and I am injoying these photos, since all the daylilies are gone now till next year.

Debra, I love all of your pictures. I do have to say that there is not a single tooth in my garden. The ones that I find handsome are still either way up in price or not available. One that I am keeping my eye out for is Spartan Warrior (Benz 2008). I wouldn't mind Jaime Gossard's Sea Monster (Gossard 2010) but that will be many years off.

I'm interested by your statement regarding Mort Morss. I haven't been growing it long, so I don't really have much of a track record for it, but it did bloom in 2009, and not at all this year. Is this how I should be expecting it to perform? Also, I used its pollen when I had it--certainly hope it doesn't pass the on again off again trait to offspring.

I got rid of Mort Morss this past spring. I'd had it since the first year Jeff S. introduced it whenever that was. It was in a prime full sun location, but its performance was very much on again off again. Some years it was fine and the next year it would almost die through winter and not bloom. My tolerance for sub-standard perfomers has dropped a huge amount in the past few years. Why put up with that when there are so many that are less fussy? Or at least that is what works for me!

Eric - I have Mort Morss, and it only blooms every other year. When it does bloom, it's a splotchy mess. I kept it around, thinking I could use it for hybridizing, but it has not been good as either a pod or pollen parent here.

Hmmm. Debra, I gotta say that doesn't make me happy! Although (silver lining) I guess that means, it wasn't my fault that MM didn't bloom this year (yay!). I don't recall it being particularly splotchy when it bloomed, but I'll definitely keep my eye on its seedlings to see if it passes on the off again on again trait. Floota--I'm right there with you regarding sub-par performers. I've been (repeatedly) disappointed by Smith's Bill Robinson and it'll get the boot if it fails to blow my socks off this year.

Wow! Those are all gorgeous! The only one I have is Ruffled Strawberry Parfait and that was new last year. I think it''s time to get rid of some oldies to make room for a few of those beauties.

I have Wreathed in Teeth, got it late in the season and got to see just one bloom. I am excited to see it this year.

This is a seedling of mine, Awesome Blossom X Wonder of it all. I really like this one and hope it developes more defined teeth in the next couple years.

I am a little nervous about mort morse! I just acquired it last year and haven't seen it perform in my garden yet. I will now keep a close eye on him.

the unknown hyberdizer of Breck's smile is Bill Dupaul...Breck is his son. He lives here in Va and I had the privledge of purchasing one myself this past summer. You should have seen it in the garden ...a nice big patch of it was really nice!!

I love this thread. I don't think I have any toothy ones, but I do love the way they look. I am at the point that I will be doing like the NCAA coaches do...an oldie will have to go to get a new "recruit" :) I expect to get a couple this year, however.
