I have a nice clear space to plant beside some azaleas and I want to plan a nice hosta bed which will be very visible from the street.

The FB pots each had 5 eyes spiking up so I'm encouraged that I'll have substantial plants this spring. I will be transplanting Krossa Regal and possibly another blue hosta at the same time.

What do you think of all 5 blue hosta arranged together? I'm thinking of 3 FB in a triangle with Krossa behind. I could offset the 5th so it doesn't look too symmetrical.

I also have Guacamole and another green hosta which I could mix in...

I like the idea of Fragrant Blue with Krossa Regal. I don't think I would put Guacamole with it, unless you have room for one other with that yellowish green to balance it out. Fragrant Blue is a low grower, Krossa is upright and would compliment it. Guacamole is such a big mound, and might end up dominating the planting.
I've had Fragrant Blue for 10 years or so, and have actually smelled the fragrance from it just one time, but I had to stick my nose way down in the flower to smell it. It's not like plantaginea or even Royal Standard, which spread the fragrance about the garden on warm evenings.
It is slow growing, but you're off to a good start already.

Sounds like a pretty grouping. Krossa is good just about anywhere you put it. My Fragrant Blue has been a slow but steady grower. It isn't all that blue here in the south, but it does have a pretty sheen. I have not noticed any fragrance, but I would have to climb over another container to get to it. I have decided to add the white edged sport Blue Flame this spring. I am losing the mollusk war this spring, but here is a shot of my Fragrant Blue. Enjoy your new plants.

'Fragrant Blue' is one of those cultivars I've had a love-hate relationship with. I love its size, its shade of blue, its glaucous leaves, I hate its slow growth and the fact I've never smelled fragrance from its flowers. Until last year.

I divided my original plant into 3 divisions 3 years ago to accommodate a trade request, kept 2, traded 1. One went back into its original spot and has grown, but nothing to write home about. The other I potted up and has done WAY better. It went from a single shoot 3 years ago to where this spring there are 7, but more important than that, it flowered last year and I got to smell its fragrance. It's rather different from most other fragrant hostas, not like 'Fragrant Bouquet' and its derivatives at all. Don't quite remember what it reminded me of, but I'll make a point of being more observant this year.

I'll go way-out on a limb here, but I suspect that all of us who have slow-growing 'Fragrant Blue' samples have never smelled its fragrance, but if you're fortunate enough to have one that is more vigorous -like its supposed to be apparently- you probably are one of lucky ones who have.

I bought Fragrant Blue based on Janice's beautiful picture. I'm not much interested in weather it's fragrant or not. The opinion that the fragrant hostas smell like Gardenias is wishful thinking in my opinion. Anyway, mine is slow as was said above. Last year I put it in quite a bit of sun which did make it put on growth. The color was never very blue from early to late in the season. I also have Blue Flame which came from Fragrant Blue. It too is slow but it is in the shade. The blue color if it is stricking. This year I will move Fragrant Blue into shade and if it stays small - so what? Here are some pictures at similar times of the summer. The way the color is represented is pretty accurate. Blue Flame stayed that color well into October so I'm hoping that Fragrant Blue will do the same once it's moved.

Fragrant Blue looks like it is worth the wait. My three will get a few hours of morning sun followed by dappled shade provided by a cherry tree. Krossa Regal was added to the grouping.

I have Elegans to transplant. Does anyone have a picture of that hosta? I am wondering what color she is.

Elegans, when mature, is the classic big powdery blue corrugated round-leafed sieboldiana.

Fragrant Blue isn't the fastest, but has been far from the slowest for me. It does have a particular blue green that is almost unique among hostas... we call it a sea foam green blue as opposed to the more common powdery blue. Nice contrast to regular blues. No fragrance for us, though...

Those are nice comparison pix that Paul posted.
Here is a shot of Elegans in '05 grown for a very long time in shade. Took about twelve years for it to get big under trees.

And Fragrant Blue, also from '05, it is up at present but not unfurled yet. I like the unique blue of FB, I think it's hard to capture in a photo. I can smell a faint scent to the blooms, but not much.

I love the pictures of Elegans. I think that one will be transplanted soon and added to the blue garden.
