last time you re-potted?

I know hoyas don't take kindly to being re-potted, so how long have you gone on some of yours? Or do you ever on some? And when you do, are you just giving them new dirt, and not a bigger pot? At what point would you stop increasing the size of the pot? I can see this new brevialata will need a new pot, this one is so tiny, not real clear how big I should go tho.

I only repot if they stop growing or refuse to flower. Small Hoyas do, of course, need to be moved up as they grow, but I still wait until they are relatively root-bound. If I repot, I always move up at least one pot size. If you don't over-disturb the rootball, it's no big deal at all to repot them. Just give them a little time to adjust to their new home and they'll take off with new growth in no time at all!

Well, I'm not a great believer in this don't disturb their roots business myself. Like Denise, if they're not thriving, I often turn 'em out for a look.

Most of my older ones haven't bloomed, yet my newer ones & cuttings from friends have, which I don't quite understand.

This question got me curious abt an old Carnosa hybrid a friend gave me a few yrs. ago. I've been taking cuttings & putting them back in the pot. They look fine, but I see no new growth anywhere. Sure enough, I turned it out & the roots were fine, but were compacting in the soil, so that the new cuttings had nice new roots, but the original root ball was too tightly clumped up in the mix. I separate the whole thing, fluffed out the roots, gave it all new mix & returned it back to the same pot. I'll give it some Superthrive tomorrow & will expect to see new growth in 2 wks or so.

I too don't usually pot them up bigger more than a size at a time.

I would think the best time would be after they fruited. At least that's when I repotted mine and pruned. Although, I've repotted(not pruned)in November once, because the soil that the plant came in was staying SO wet...I was afraid I would lose it to root rot. IF the mix its in now has a lot of peat...you might want to change the soil to something more porous. Are you letting your tree fruit this year...If you are letting it fruit, then the best time is after harvest. If not you might be able to do it now since you live in Miami and your winter is pretty mild...but if we have another winter like we had last year, you will have to bring it inside the house when the nights get below 32 degrees. But to be on the safe side and get the best results I would wait till the weather is consistently warm to do any drastic pruning...for you April might be the best time. Just my opinion.

The best time of day to repot is when you're in a good mood and have some time to yourself. The second best time of day is when you're in a bad mood and have some time to yourself. The worst time of day is when you're pressed for time and don't feel like repotting. If there was a time of day that, for physiological reasons, was easiest on the plant, it would be early evening. The reason is, as sunlight wanes and the plant enters the respirative Krebs cycle, it is no longer using water taken up from roots for photosynthesis, in fact, water is a byproduct of respiration, so the roots don't have to work as hard to keep the plant turgid (keep it from wilting). That's why plants that wilt during the day often perk up in the evening. So, when you remove roots during a repotting (as opposed to potting up), it's (very) slightly easier on the plant if you do it late in the day. However, the next day is a new day, and the advantage lies only in how much the plant was able to recover (root function) during the overnight period. Al

ES - there should be no rush to repot until the root mass is congested to the point where roots and soil can be lifted from the pot intact. Your plant should be potted up before that occurs for best growth. Too, you shouldn't be in a rush to move a plant up if you're growing in a soil that retains lots of water, as a larger pot before the plant needs it would compound issues related to water retention. OTOH, if you're using a very coarse soil that won't hold water in a soggy layer at the bottom of the pot, you can plant a seedling in a 55 gallon drum if you like. When using the right soil there IS no upper limit to pot size, regardless of plant size. When you use a fertilizer like kelp, do you know what you're supplying and when it will be available to the plant? Probably not. OTOH, if you're using a soluble fertilizer that contains all the nutrients essential to normal growth and in a favorable ratio, you know exactly what you're supplying and exactly when it will be available (the minute you apply it) to your plants. When you're using one fertilizer that doesn't include all essential nutrients, or combining fertilizers in attempt to cover the bases, you're either missing elements or over-applying/duplicating one or more (more is more likely) nutrients, so the ratio of nutrients (to each other) in the soil can quickly become skewed. Either course will be limiting. The goal for fertilizing containerized plants can easily be described. You should work toward ensuring that all the nutrients plants normally secure from the soil are in the soil solution at all times, in the ratio at which the plant actually uses the nutrients, and at a concentration high enough to ensure no deficiencies yet low enough to ensure the plant isn't impeded in its ability to take up water and the nutrients dissolved in water. This goal is easily achievable using one water soluble synthetic fertilizer. You CAN use organic forms of nutrition, like fish/seaweed emulsions or various types of meal, but that makes it much more difficult to achieve the goal. Al

I know I'm a little late..but I'd re-pot them right now, trust me they'll love it, and will appreciate you for it..What I found best that works for these cacti, is perlite mixed with cactus soil (if you put in just cactus soil made by MG it just floods then finally drains, which isn't good) also thanks to Josh pure orchid bark works wonders! but you have to water more often (which isn't an issue) my plants I've had for a good amount of years, and they've always rewarded me, I never wanted them to get overly big, and the more I prune back, they more new growth they put out =) I fertilize mine from about March all the way through August. When it comes to fertilizer, less is always more; you don't want to burn their roots. Good luck with both your cacti! =D Last note, the Easter Cactus grows exactly the same as any holiday cactus, so don't buy into all the negative hype; that's just an over blown rumor that got started because people don't know what they're doing ;)

I usually repot when I literally see the roots coming out of the drainage holes:) Spring is the only time I repot. Then I move it up a pot size. This treatment goes with all of my plants, so far they seem to like it. My hoya carnosa is growing a whole lot. No flowers but she is growing:)

My compacta has been in the same pot for years (had its first flowers this year) and will probably stay there for some time to come. Most people would have considered it overpotted when I put it in its current pot, but once it adjusted it grew pretty quickly (for a compacta), and the big pot saved me having to pot up again. It's in an 8" hanging pot now, and it sticks out ~6" on each side of the pot. I'm not sure I'd want it to get a lot larger. My main concern is how I'd transplant it without a lot of breakage. If I find myself an assistant, I think it could be done, but I'm not going to attempt it before it's really needed.
I tend to re-pot my others sooner, as their leaf shapes don't make them as apt to tangle and break. However, only a few of my Hoyas are old plants; most of them I've gotten in the last three years. (It's you ladies' influence, you know ;)

Wow, lots of feedback on this one. I was kinda wondering if any of you had your hoyas in the same pots for multiple (5 plus) years, and if you ever planned on re-potting if there were no visible signs of distress? I wouldn't want to tackle even my relatively small (5 ft.) by myself.

5 ft. Hoya is small? Yikes, mine are quite small (tho' a few are a ft. around). Wow, I'd have to get a bigger apmt for a 5 ftr!

oh, I guess I've seen some of y'alls plants which are growing outside or in greenhouses and think mine is small compared to them. And the gal I got this one from had hers growing thru the ceiling beams of her log home and I would say it was 15 to 20 ft in spots. And blooming?!! oh my, this was in July and I bet it had 20 blooms on it, I was quite impressed, and told her if she ever had the opportunity I would take a cutting. Mine will also go into the logwork in my home (when it gets done) It currently has 3 peduncles started on it, crossing our fingers. It bloomed 2 years ago and nothing since, I believe this is a common carnosa, from what I recall of the first bloom. I've just started researching these plants, so will be examining the blooms VERY closely when they open.

Wow, first time to this hoya forum for me!! Didn't even realize it had it's own site.Learn something new everyday.

I have a hoya,havn't a clue what species as it was given to me a few years ago.It bloomed very well last year,and i think somewhere around here i have pictures of it.Just can't remember if they're in an album or on this computor.Will have to look later.

Several years ago i had a very large one hanging on my front porch,til some A*****E decided it should be theirs.Hope it didn't bloom any more for them!!

Anyway,now that i've found you will check back often.

Guess i should introduce myself::My name is Kathi,and i live in S.Calif,and i love to garden as does my dh.We have very many plants and flowers,and have hardly ever met one we didn't like.LOL We're both retired and enjoying every minute of it.

Hope that you are enjoying your retirement, Kathi and the fact that you have flowering hoyas is great.

I want to comment on the msg from Natrld.(sorry, I do not know your name)- you asked if anyone had older plants in pots which had not been repotted or wording to that effect; I have two Hoya Carnosas (variety unknown) which have been in the same pots about 10 years. I should take cuttings from one of them but they presently have peduncles and am awaiting (crossing my fingers) BLOOMS. Capitals-- because I want to be positive that, in fact, they will bloom hehe!

The other plant does not have long vines and is slower in new growth and have both come originally from the same plant. Go figure. I don't know whether I should repot. If I can figure out how to show pics online, will let you be the judge of that. That's all for now.
