Bulb Planting too!! and some daylily talk

I went crazy planting bulbs. I just love the planning and all my orders came at perfect times, the weather was perfect and it rained each time after I spent hours planting. I ordered 360 daffs, some are for forcing that I split with co workers. 150 muscari, 25 asiatic and oriental lilies.

Here is one order, the box weighed 49 pounds!! Bowie sure was curious and followed me all around the yard as I planted.

Here are the muscari, and they were huge!! ready to plant, I like to border the beds with them.

The lily bulbs were super nice this year!!! I received these from B&D Lilies, (thanks Rita, you had recommended them a couple of years ago)

Fashion Police was blooming for me, but I had to bring it in and it finished up in a vase. Cant' wait to see it next summer.

Then I had a late scape come up, but it did get cut!!! It was from Maryott, of course.

I've been busy, getting the garden ready for winter, I like to shred my leaves and use them for mulch, I couldn't do it without my Best Friend. LOL

The weather sure has been fabulous, I thought I might have to get out the sunscreen!!! But it will soon be over. Last weekend I took the time to take one last 'cruise' down the lake. The water and sky were so blue!! It's great exercise too on a paddle boat. Like I needed it after all that bulb planting!!

I just read Rita's message about all the bulbs she planted and now yours. You ladies must have energy to burn to get all that planting done. Make sure you post some pictures of your garden next spring it will look amazing.

Oh, Cindy the lake is beautiful. I know what you mean about nice days. Before my bulbs came I actually took many walks in the park accross the street.

I see Bowie mushing with his friend there. Too many he can't be taught to plant bulbs LOL!

You had lots to plant there, its going to look great. You know I always love your daffs.

Well, I planted other things over the weekend but I started on my lily bulbs first thing today. I have 125 of them planted which is all the 5 grouping of 25 each indivual ones. The ones left to plant are the 50 mixed colors Asiatics which I am going to be planting in the upstairs daylily bed. This year its the Snapdragon bed as I put snapdragons between some of the daylilies. Had room to do so as I had moved afew daylilies of of there last fall and this spring. This is the bed with mostly the Korth daylilies. At any rate, never mind my rambling. I have plenty of time to get the rest planted today but am so stiff and ackey that I don't know if I want to start there. I need to finish once I start there as I intend to first set out all the bulbs and them go around and plant them. I might just do some odds and ends of other garden chores and planting the rest of this afternoon instead. The BLACKOUT lilies that I just planted were pretty much sprouted so I had to be careful planting. All the others so far were really good as they had not oversprouted. Makes it easier when they haven't got the long shoots already growing so you have to be careful not to break them. But of course it means they come up even faster if they are growing already.

Julia, I started adding bulbs to a few of my daylily beds where the daylilies are planted rather randomly. Since they don't bloom at the same time they can go anywhere. I didn't put in daffodils just tulips, alliums and narcissus. It really makes your gardens look nicer in the spring. I try to mark each clump with a stick or something or before you know it I am planting something over the bulbs and digging them up! I also put in many lilies although I was blessed with beetle for the first time last year so I don't know where that's going. I put shorter pot lilies around the front of the beds and taller ones mixed throughout. We just had a lady came and talk to our hort group on Tuesday about bulbs, specifically tulips. She came from Holland in 2007 where they grew tulips for the international cut flower market. She said your tulips will last much longer if you dig them up every summer and give them a rest in a cool dark place, then plant again in the fall. Too much work for me but I remember my grandmother always doing that. Every June or July her bulbs would be under her picnic table drying out. This lady also said the older varieties will last for many more years than the newer ones. Try to buy the biggest size bulbs you can. And while planting them deep protects them from frost and freezing, the deeper you put them the more energy the bulb has to use to grow stem up that far. I didn't really think of that before. It's sort of a trade-off I guess. Maybe not too deep and mulched? Many of the tulips I had around my house didn't bloom this year. I think they got frosted as the flower was about to come up. Our speaker said they should still be fine for next year, maybe better as the plant didn't waste energy on a flower yet still had leaves to send energy to the bulb. I guess I will see. The ones further out in my beds did fine and after such a mild winter I found they had multiplied. So did my lilies. Daylilies and spring bulbs are a great combination as they have separate seasons so go for it! It's like planning the same garden twice. Debbie

Daylilies are one of the hardiest, low maintenance perennials out there. In fact, some spread so quickly they are almost like weeds! Daylilies THRIVE when divided with relative frequency. I have actually left some clumps o daylilies utside on the bare ground over winter, and in 1 example, I found 2 clumps this past OCTOBER/early November. They both clearly still had good roots, so I planted them and expect to get blooms next year. The only caveat to late season planting is the stronger risk of heaving. Like bulbs, though, they can be planted right up to snow in some cases. If the ground is diggable to the necessary depth, and doesn't have ice grains, you can plant them. Mark-

Thanks for the quick response Mantis! I should probably re-think my distaste for mulch. But in the meantime, I moved some little succulents from elsewhere - they do not seem to be very aggressive, and their roots are quite shallow. Yes, I agree that anything spreading can become problematic. The next garden bed I'll be re-digging has my irises, and the "creeping lemon thyme" has gotten totally out of control. I guess that is a big benefit of mulch - it doesn't directly compete! Thanks, Jane

I see you even took off your shoe in the leaf blower pic ;-). It must have been warm.

We also are on this roller coaster of temps. For a few days it got very cold and then we are back up into the 60's again.

I always love the pics of Bowie and his mom.

Beautiful pictures, love the lake pic. Bowie is feeling pretty good about it too. Planting all those bulbs should keep you out of trouble for a while :) I have to get out & plant a few daffs, but I don't have nearly that many. I add a few every year & divide some of those I already have.
I'll be expecting lots of pictures next year, should be stunning!

That lake is gorgeous Cindy, and those muscari are large.

I have to wait a bit yet, but my orders are coming in. I also got lilies from B and D and they are nice (another thanks to Rita) The tulips are coming in now, but I have a few hundred to come yet.

Bowie looks like a supervisor. Your garden will be gorgeous again next year.

Wow,That lake is sooo pretty.And so is your flower gardens,Looks like you have a alful lot of bulbs to plant, too.Maybe Bowie will help and help dig some holes for them.My cat thats outside came while I was sitting on a stool pulling some weeds out,and she was digging them out.I sure hope you and Rita takes piles of pictures this next spring of all these bulbs blooming,

I am always inspired to plant more bulbs after seeing Cindy's pictures in the spring. Love all the daffodils there in Cindy's garden. And I know that I will be taking lots and lots of pictures in the spring, especially with all the new bulbs planted.

My goodness, I have to agree with everyone else about the lake. Its stunning. I have received my B&D order and expecting my other order today so hopefully I can get outside and plant tomorrow. I hope to add more and more bulbs as the years go on. Each year it seems I get hung up on one plant or another, hosta, lilies, roses and now bulbs. Oh wait, I forgot peonies. lol!! So ready for spring to see everyones new bulbs. Love the kitties too.

Hey, thanks everyone, Now you know I will post spring pics, and I love looking at everyone's too!! Thanks again Rita, cause the bulbs from B&D were especially nice this time, although they have always been good.!! That is Bowie's kitty mom. Jean, Bowie will dig holes for me, but sometimes it is after I have planted!! So, I will cover the newly planted areas with netting. They are always doing the kitty head rub. LOL. Oh, Julia, that shoe , I didn't even notice it was in the picture!! Just that one washed up from the lake some time ago, and I am waiting for the other one!!! You wouldn't believe some of the "treasure" I find. including really nice drift wood that I use in the gardens. Here is another cute pic of Bowie and his Mom sleeping in the sunshine.

I love these KITTY pictures of Bowie. well,I love any pictures of kitties.I love kitties.,hahaha so Bowie digs up your bulbs after you plant them..My cat wont dig them up, but, she sits and watched me to see what I am doing, and if I am sitting on a stool pulling up weeds, then she finds a weed close by and she digs it up.She finished after one weed.I believe she thinks she should get a reward after she digs up one.

Love the picture of Bowie and his mom. Too funny that he digs after you planted. Well, maybe you don't think it's so funny. But Bowie is a good kitty so I know you don't get mad at him :-))

I haven't bought anything from B&D lilies in awhile but they are known for having nice bulbs. I didn't get any lily bulbs this fall, only lots of ones last spring. Next spring I intend to get more as I want to be putting some out in that front garden were I had been working. It should look great with daylilies, tall bearded iris, tulips, daffoldils and then some lilies.

You guys have way too much energy! And I love the pictures of the kitties too.

I spent my time this year digging up bulbs. I pulled up daffodil bulbs abd lilium bulbs that had made huge clumps. I did plant some in a few other areas ... but not like you two did.

I forgot, again, to dig up more allium bulbs ... those are also getting too crowded. Maybe this weekend ...

Julia, i was gonna post again about the camera, on mydaylilies, I do love it, but found one thing--- It does not take any pictures when it gets dark, which I guess is OK, except when you might have flowers that open at night. I had filmed one last bud on a noctural opening daylily, I set it up in the early evening and let it run until the next morning. The play back just showed the daylily pop open, which was OK, but the one I did on Francois Verhaert, which opened in the morning, it was just so much better to see it slowly open. Other than that I love it!! I plan on setting it out early in the spring on the daffodils, with it set to take a picture once every 12 hours and I will leave it in the same location for several weeks.

Cindy - I need to get you and Bowie down here to plant my 30 red tulip bulbs that are still sitting in the bag. I hope to get at least some of them in the ground this weekend. I love the photos of Bowie and his mom. What a sweet pair!

Cindy: I was wondering about the evening filming if it would show or not. I think it would be so interesting to see them open but you can still do the daytime openings and all those bulbs opening should be a spectacular show. Now I really have to get one of those new toys!
