lets get to know each other!

i figured, because im new to the forum and am posting all the time that it might be fun to have a thread to tell everyone something about ourselves...

i am 25 years old and am a stay at home mom of a 3 yr old little boy and a 1 yr old little girl and i live in new york state (NOT NYC)... i LOVE plants but i think the only thing i love more than plants is music. my husband and i collect cds and records and we love pretty much everything such as bluegrass, country (old like johnny cash, not the new stuff), punk, pop punk, ska, reggae, rock, anything related to motown, classical, ect... ask me if i like someone specific and i probably do... i also love to cook, but nothing fancy... my specialty is comfort/soul food... one of my favorite things to do is when the day is almost over, and my kids have calmed down some, i like to pour myself a glass of wine and walk around outside looking at all my beautiful plants, most of which i have no idea what they are because i didnt plant them... if im not walking around outside im sitting and relaxing in my sunroom enjoying my plants in there... i look forward to learning more about everyone else!

I'm new to the forums as well. Just found this one. I only have a few Hoyas as I'm growing in an apartment, also in NY state, not NYC, lol! I'll probably be mostly lurking as although I grow orchids, cacti, succulents, and carnivorous plants, I'm new to Hoyas. Only been growing them for about a year, so I'm still in the learning phase rather than contributing.

Hi everybody. This is my first time checking in on this particular forum. I was reading this post with no intention of writing anything, but calpat made me laugh as she reminded me of something that happened to my mom. She had COPD and just passed away this spring. We loved to garden together and were determined to start a vegetable garden together this year, only she didn't quite make it. It was going to be our therepy together. I have MS and Chrones disease so we would have made quite a pair. To get back to calpat..I was at my moms a few years ago when a health care worker showed up to assist her. Mom had been sick and on oxygen for years. We were all talking about how happy we would be when spring finally got here and how much we looked forward to the flowers and working in the garden after a long winter. One of us spied the first robins of spring on the front lawn and all rushed to the window at the same time. In our haste the healthcare worker stepped on my mothers oxygen tube just as my mom headed for the window and the tubing ripped off her face and shot across the room. It shocked us all so much that we froze in horror. Then my mom started laughing so hard she lost her breath which made her laugh harder. By then we were all laughing until tears were rolling down our cheeks. The healthcare worker was renamed Robin and was taunted endlessly about trying to rip my moms ears off. She went by Robin for so long that neither of us could remember what her real name was. I know that this thread was supposed to be telling you about me. Well in a round about way it is. I started my garden without her, though it broke my heart everytime I went out there. We had talked for a few years about how much we wanted to put in a vegetable garden and can, but weren't able to because either she or I was too ill to do it. Gardening, though painful for many reasons, has been good therepy. I cried a lot of tears out there this year. Grieving not just for the loss of her, but for the loss of me and the life I had hoped and planned for. It took several years for me to be finally diagnosed with MS and Crohns. Years of misery with my doctors telling me that there was nothing wrong with me. Years of anger and frustration because I knew it wasn't "all in my head". I was being robbed of my life and I didn't even know why all of these things were happening to me. Long story. I let go of a lot out there with my hands buried in the soil. Gardening is good for the soul. Thanks calpat for a memory that didn't hurt--too much.... Thanks Vickie for starting this post!

I have two sides going so far--lots of seedlings going in the areas that look bare. side 1 (this was the 1st side I did back in March): And this is side 2 (I had a bunch of herbs and potatoes but decided to go above ground with those (I just threw together the wood planters from scraps we had laying around-now ISO soil): I have corn, greens, beans, and a few other sprouts coming up--I threw the straw down (from when I cleared our side yard in May) to give them a bit of shade and extra water---this side gets like 6 hours of INTENSE sun this time of year (especially this year). I have some raspberries to plant in the back corner on side 2--I'd love to have a little berry patch. But through research I've found very few varieties grow in a 10a zone (this part is all new to me) Those retaining wall planters are my next big project but the dirt is so compacted I can't even dig---but I'm thinking of just top filling it after I pull everything...just can bring myself to get rid of all my aloe and succulents that grow up in the shade. I'd love to do something vertical... (Side 1) (Side 2) This is the first year I'm doing this---I pulled the existing shrubs (2 10 year old hibiscus, a 10 year old rosemary, among others) all by hand and turned the soil myself---my husband's around to help but it's mostly a project I've taken on myself. I'd like to get a bit more organized as far as what grows where and when, more vertical growth, etc...one thing at a time I suppose. I've shown you mine--who's showing theirs? I remember Spike, also. Live in a rented farmhouse a couple of miles from the freeway between Detroit/Windsor and Toronto, about half way between. Have had a garden for several years - biggest ever, this year ... over 3/4 of a mile of rows ... and the weeds are succeeding in getting ahead of me. Pleased to be in quite good health at over 80: son 50 nearby and daughter closing in on it, who, having dual ciizenship, has lived in Phoenix a couple of times over the past 15 years or so and now lives mostly with her partner who operates a motorcyle rental franchise on Cozumel, off the Mexican coast. Hi! I'm a 23 year old plant fanatic. I've been dating the love of my life for 3 years. No kids (yet). Half of my collection is succulents and i'm just starting to collect Hoyas. They're addictive!

I live in Philadelphia but was born in northern new jersey. I also collect stones.

yay! im very happy to see someone my own age interested in plants, its so addictive! my grandmother and mother are both garden/plant/flower nuts so i must have inherited my obsession from them! my husband and i have been together 7 years and married 4 in june. and my new favorite plant is HOYAS!!!!

Well, I'm 40 and honestly mainly an orchid grower, but the Hoyas are quickly increasing. I have about 50 - 60 different Hoyas now. I'm fortunate to live in a beach town on the Florida panhandle where our weather is great for growing both Hoyas and orchids, many of which I can leave outside year round.

Over the last year, I've been moving all the potted plants to inorganic media which has it's own requirements, but they seem to be quite happy with it.

I have three sons from ages 20 - 12 that are pretty good about helping me take care of "my plants" - oh and I have a lovely hubby who supports my obsession also.

I'm traveling now a good bit for work, so I post inconsistently. While I check the site when I'm on the road on my tablet, it is difficult to post on it or my phone.

I am new returning to the forum. My name is Alavone 28 years old and have at least 80 plants in my home. 20 of them are hoyas. I am a local florist and have 3 kids one was born a month ago! I am married 6 years to my best friend. I am from California but now reside in Abilene Texas.

Hi all :)

I am new in these forums - 32, from Queensland, Australia (nice and tropical!)
I have a hoya addiction (about 40 different species so far!),
doing my doctoral studies in genetics, long term partner of 10+ years, a woosy whippet that looks like a tassie tiger, two pythons and a goldfish :)

Very keen gardener, with more than a passing interest in entomology and mycology... all of biology interests me actually, especially if its slimy, bitey, green or gross!

Looking forward to learning more on these forums :)

Hi im Natalie im 24 from New Zealand. I have a few hoyas all common ones including carnosa both variegated carnosa, a few pubicaly x's, moteskei, the curly leafed one, linearis, sheperdii fishtail hoya and serpens maybe some others

I also have coffee,cinnamon,apricot from seed,2 avacados from seed,2 dragonfruit,2 tamarillos,one orchid,icecream bean,sapote,japanese raisin,gooseberry,blackcurrant,rasberry,fig,lemonade and some succulents

Im trying to grow all my own fruit etc.

Its good to see there is someone from across the ditch so we could maybe swap some stuff maybe.
