I just root them in water and then pot them up. Several weeks ago, I rooted two large prolifs of 'Margo Reed Indeed' and now they are potted up to take to the Fall Region 3 meeting next weekend. You can also root these in rooting mediums such as vermiculite. Sometimes I have just stuck these in the ground (sometimes you can see roots beginning to form on them before they are cut) beside the mother plant and root them that way.

Several times, I've seen proliferations put out a scape and bloom. Now that's unusual!

I leave mine on the scapes as long as possible, but when the scape starts to die, I cut the scape off about 3 inches below the prolif and root them in water. Change the water often, daily if temps are warm and as soon as the roots have stared growing, I pot them up. Leave the old scape on the prolif, it will anchor the plant in the soil until the roots take hold.

I was watching some of my proliferations and was going to do what Ed suggested about waiting as long as possible. So one day when I was out in the flower bed, I didn't have my pruners with me and I was too lazy to go get them. I broke off all the proliferations from the main branch (about 6) and rooted them in water. They all rooted well and I gave them to my friend. Of course, she knows that they may not bloom next year, but she was thrilled just the same:)

Thank you all for your input. I'm excited to try rooting these proliferations. This daylily is one of my favorites, for it puts out spectacular, large yellow flowers as big a my hand, it grows into a shrub nearly 5 feet tall, and it blooms all summer long and well into the fall. Here it is, mid-October and I still have buds on it waiting to bloom. I'm excited to have a few more throughout the garden and to share it with some friends. :)
