In my experience, the ones that show this seem to just grow out of it once the weather gets more consistently warmer. As of now, highs in the sixties/fifties and lows in the thirties, and I'm sure you're experiencing the same weather as I am, since you're from NE Ohio, not too far from me. Just give them some time, but perhaps someone else a bit more knowledgeable about this will chime in. Again, it's just my experience to wait for warmer days. Karen

I agree with the posts above that I had much more "spring sickness" this year than last. I even has 10 month old seedlings that had it as they put on new growth in the early spring. I've heard people suggest the odd weather many of us had across the nation this year was one of the causes, but people much smarter than me haven't found the answer to "What causes spring sickness?", so what can I say! Since my daylilies are just now coming into their main blooming time, I can say that most - - but not all - - of the plants affected have grown or are growing out of it, even the seedlings. I had much more of the gnarled, twisted leaves (still upright, though) and the splitting along the edge of the foliage like at the top of the upper picture in the AHS "Spring Sickness" page than of the plant laid out flat on the ground, but as I said, its mostly gone now. Wonder what will happen next year? I didn't keep records of which had it and which didn't this year, so I won't be able to answer the questions then either! Oh well... Larry

My daylilies have looked worse this spring than any other year. I think many got frosted a few times. The dormants are okay but the evs and Sevs have looked terrible. Some of the leaves were just hanging there limp. I don't think it has been spring sickness on most of them. I always get a few plants that have it but they look different than this. They are growing through it but I have cut many yellow ends off and am going to do more. I always seem to have some leaf streak and have heard it can infect already damaged leaves. This year it is going to be terrible. I have also lost the centre of a few clumps that are fairly close to each other. Do moles or voles do this? I always see their tracks when the snow melts but have never had an issue with them in my daylilies. They put many holes in my lawn but I just look at it as aeration! These clumps look like all of the centre fans just disappeared.

Just a short follow-up that might make you smile. I had quite a bit of spring sickness this year and all of them have outgrown it and most are blooming well or have completed blooming. I had one seedling in particular that was planted last spring that I almost pulled up six weeks ago and threw away because it looked so bad. It was easily the most severely affected plant - - gnarled and twisted. While all the other seedlings from the same cross were growing a large single fan or coming up with a a second one, this plant just had foliage pointing in all directions - - up, down, and twisting around - - you couldn't even tell how many fans there were. However, in the last 3-4 weeks, it finally settled down and is growing correctly. However, I can now recognize 4-5 fans and it is putting up 4 scapes!. Its much later than its siblings, but it will easily out produce the 'normal' in terms of number of fans and number of blooms. Just give your plants some more time and they will be fine. Larry
