My 2009 Springwood Gardens Catalog Came TodaY

I was outside mulching my daylilies and getting them weeded and ready

for winter when the mail came and I saw an envelop with Springwood

Gardens return address. Looked and on the back flap was written advance

copy, that the website would be updated soon with 2009 intros. So I had

to stop my mulching and sit there in my lawnchair by my little table

outside and gawk at the pictures in the catalog.

Absolutely stunning, I can't describle how beautiful they are. I

already knew that I would be ordering again from Karol for spring as I

knew it was impossible that I would not want some of her 2009s when I

saw them. Plus there are still some from prior years that I want to

get. Couldn't get everything this last year in spite of the fact that I

have a whole bunch of those lovely intros growing here planted this

spring. So now I have to pick my favorites and already know I will be

going with the daylily pictured on the cover as it is so striking and

attention getting. Now to decide on which others to chose. Difficult,

but lots of fun trying to decide.

Anita, a few times now I've grown tuberous begonias from seed, previously being the Show Angels, that's a nice mixture. Growing begonias from seed is not difficult, it's just slow. Germination temperature needs to be 75F or a bit higher, they'll start to emerge in about ten days. I know it's recommended growing them under lights, though this early in the season I won't turn on the lights solely for one small container of seedlings. For now I have them in a warm bright location (not in the sun) and when they establish a bit, I'll remove the plastic and begin giving them more sun, or I might by then have the grow lights on. It takes several months before they're large enough to handle and transplant ... though, once they get going they really do take off! For those in a short season area and wanting bulbs to keep over, then before frost, move your plants to a greenhouse or bring into your home and grow on until they begin go into deline and drop their foliage and stems. You then should have decent little bulbs for next spring. These will produce full sized vigorous plants. For anyone with the least bit of experience, I'd recommend giving them a try ... it's not as difficult or as challenging as it might seem. Terry

Are you kidding? Hide the CC,I have just kicked off the season with early order of snaps,pansies and violas(already sewn,already up and will be first out to very early spring market). We're not doing vegetable market garden any more so ...LOOK OUT!Mo'Money for prudy flower sales at market a few to sneak into my flowerbeds. I'm waiting for the start date on co-op to Summer Hill Seeds. They're restocking now and we have to wait until Nov. 5 to be able to get to order. I'm feeling withdrawal already...Sweaty palms,nervous twitching,darting eyes,drooling and slobbering....ya know...the usual symptoms P

Just found I made a $400 error in cheque book some months ago (don't ask why it's taken me that long to confirm it!?) anyway, the error has stayed stable for 3 months, so I figure it's found money. Now weighing whether I can consider it a gift from the hosta gods and use some of it for Naylor Creek order... I'm leaning towards thanking the gods very much and taking advantage of the 20% off and free shipping... I just had to bring this thread back up again, because I received a D. Landreth Seed Co. catalog yesterday (two of them actually). Can't remember where I ran across their website, but the catalog is way more impressive than their website. Not only have they been in business for 225 years, and sold seeds to numerous presidents, but their selection of heirlooms is quite impressive. I checked the watchdog site to see what their ratings were, and was surprised to find very few reviews of them at all, though most of the ones posted were posted. Digit, you would love their catalog, if you don't already have it. It's a commemorative edition, with lots of excerpts from their early catalogs. I may have to keep one of the catalogs just for all of the historical information. Guess I can mark in the extra one : ) The only drawback to the catalog is the lack of photos. There is a small section in the middle with photos, but if you aren't familiar with an item, you may have to look it up on another website to see what it looks like. Jean, you know next to taking pictures of my daylilies, picking out new ones is my favorite thing to do.

Just wait until these intros go on line so everyone can see them.

Kay if you don't order any I will be shocked. They are stunners. The one that is the cover plant, called DESIRE OF NATIONS is almost impossible to describe. A stunning shade of rich purple that Karol calls cranberry (very descriptive choice) with lighter blue-lavender eye or watermark, yellow-green throat. Heavily ruffles edges of multiple color ending in a white edgeing. The darn thing is absolutely striking and looks like it HAD to have been hybridized in south florida to look like that.

The other favorite of mine is called WALL OF FIRE, a rose coral (looks reddish) with lighter watermark, stunning.

Karol told me last night (e-mail) that the website would be updated with the 2009 intros within afew days. Can't wait to see it as I am still trying to decide on my finial choices so would like more pictures to look at. I have decided on three of them for sure but up in the air between some others.

The website with 2009 intros should be updated by tonight or tomorrow morning. Meanwhile the 2008 greenhouse seedling page has ben added. I just flipped over seedling 11908 and e-mailed Karol to ask if it was a future intro.

I'm flipping over more than just the 11908! I just checked their website & still not updated yet. Let me know what she says about 11908. That is gorgeous & really curious who the parents are.

Boy, she sure has some beauties in her seedling bed!!! I love 11908, and then the others that I absolutely adore also are all right in a row in the bottom left hand side. 29408, 37508, 5108, and 7708!!! Gosh, would I ever love to have all 5 of them!! Those are just incredible! I hope they are all good enough in all the other areas besides just great looks and she introduces them. I know I wouldn't have to think twice about ordering them, that's for sure!! Thanks for the link Rita! I will be really glad to see the 2009 intros online! Jan G.

Now those are some gorgeous seedlings! I love that one too. Good grief she is a great hybridizer, isn't she though?

29408 is the next one I flipped over. Karol said that the 08 means this is the first year that they bloomed. She uses them for hybridizing then increases in the greenhouse. Last stage is testing them outside to see if they are hardy before deciding if they become intros or not. I am hoping for my favorites to be winter hardy and become intos.

The new intros weren't up yet when I looked, but spent quite a bit of time ogling the seedlings!

Wow Wow Wow and Wow. Can you imagine walking through a greenhouse full of those beauties? She has sure done a super job with her seedlings!

I am just dying to see the ones that you had to have Rita. I love her flowers, and will definitely be adding some in the next couple of years!

The 2009s are up and there are some pretty ones. My favorites are Coin of the Realm, Kingdom Without End, and Rich in Mercy. I could wish the budcount were a bit higher.

They are up, the 2009s intros are up!

I am getting DESIRE OF NATIONS, WALL OF FIRE, KINGDOM WITHOUT END and COUNT IT ALL JOY. I am going back and forth and back and forth again between SPIRIT OF THE TRUTH and FOUNTAIN OF LIFE and also RICH IN MERCY for my last pick and so far, have not decided.

The colors of the flowers show up lighter on my moniter than the pictures in the printed catalog do. I also remember from last year that the real blooms looked even better than the pictures!

I love the look of the watermarks on Karols flowers too. I have found that they look even better in my garden than they do in her pictures. Her pictures are good ones, not saying that they are not. Just saying that her intros are so beautiful that they look so much better in my actual garden than even the pictures can show.

This is one thing that I pay lots of attention too. I have found that many of the pictures on hybridizers websites make the flowers look much better than they look in a real garden. This is never a problem with my favotite hybridizers like Karol, Phil Korth and Mary Jane Meadows.

They are all gorgeous and nice to see that you Northerners have beautiful choices that you know are Northern Hardy!!

Can't wait to see your pictures of them next year, Rita (and anyone else that gets them...who knows, maybe me too!If I get some things going my way that I think will happen and that I am planning, I will also be able to afford some new intros this winter for Spring!) :>) :>) Jan G.

The 2009 intros are wonderful! I absolutely love Kingdom Without End, Coin of the Realm, and Megillah. I really like the edge on Megillah.

I bought a heck of a lot less daylilies than I did last year but only spent
slightly less than I did last year because I chose almost all new intros
this time around. Well, the daylily beds will just get more fabulous in 2009

I figgured I had better post about my Springwood Gardens order that came the other day. Most that I bought (except for TIM KORNDER not available last year) were 2009 intros. I got at least double huge, huge fans except for DESIRE OF NATIONS which was one fan but the biggest of the lot. I remember last year my order was mostly 2 fans except for MAN OF SORROWS which was a single daylily fan, the biggest I have ever seen. That split into two last fall and it came up three fans this spring.

So I had asked for HEALING TOUCH as a bonus and received that. I had also listed two of her 2009 intros as bonus sugestions and I figgured I would be lucky if I could get one of them. Well, she sent both! Both two large fans. I got FOUNTAIN OF LIFE and RICH IN MERCY.

I am a very happy camper :-))
