Advice on moving hostas that aren't up yet

Greetings all! It's been a while since I was on the hosta forum.

I saw that Ken mentioned on another forum that it's good to move hostas before they emerge. I have a number that I'd like to do. I have two kinds...ones which have last year's dead foliage and flower stalks, so I know exactly where they are. The others had fall clean up, so entering with the shovel will take nerve...

On the ones that I can see the dead flower stalks, how much further OUTSIDE of their circle do I enter the soil, in order to avoid cutting off the roots with my shovel?

On the ones that I don't know exactly where their center is or how wide the roots became, what's a good method to safely discover where they are exactly so as to avoid a slaughter scene?
