The Best of the Last (lots of pics)

We've gotten a lot of rain & wind lately so the autumn leaves are falling fast and it's getting quite cold at night. I am quite sure these are going to be the last blooms that are going to look presentable. Once they get frozen they look ratty. I still am surprised that I have roses this late. It's highly unusual for zone 4!

Some photos were taken last week and some are from today.

There is still a lot of beauty out there and I wanted to share it with you all before it's just a memory.

My goodness Celeste, Lil Conner is getting so big and such a little cutie!! I know you enjoy getting him to yourself when you can. Your shots are so gorgeous. We are expecting colder temps this week and I so dread it. Judy

Yay! I was hoping for more pics! I love the color contrast on the Brothers Grimm rose, and the Clara Curtis daisies especially. Maybe a dumb question, but do they overwinter pretty well, then?
Beautiful scenery!! I love the mountains and peeking horse :)

medo,I do believe I read somewhere you need at least 3/4 mile to reduce cross pollination! I am keeping certain ones in pots ,I plan to bag flowers and/or hand pollinate. The pink one was supposed to be Violet Feather,but turned out pink! I am thrilled to death with it! :D One thing I really like about MG's is they are full of wonderful surprises,and I am not picky anyway,I love them all! :) So my first attempts at hand pollination will benefit my buddies! ;) mnwsgal,I would be glad to share seeds from the pink one with you. I was so happy to see it! I really wanted a MG that was a lighter shade of pink,so when that opened I was in no way disappointed it wasn't a violet color.The Honeysuckle smells fantastic,although it is crazy growing,I find it worth the effort to control it! Besides I love the look of it,I have a well established driveway wall full of it,I love the way it cascades down! :) stagerat,Thanks so much for the compliments,I love taking pics,especially of plantlife. This season you guys will be seeing lots of them, I am sure!;) Northerner,thanks so much! Actually the purple flower is Dame's Rocket. I am finding I like this one a whole lot,it seems like it compliments whatever it is near.I really love MG's too,I was so happy to see how many different ones there are. I think each year from here on out I will only plant 2 or 3 varieties at a time....lol...we will see about that! ;) Thanks Karen! :D terrene,that would also be Dames Rocket,they really love it,I see them frequently hanging around since it bloomed. I am going to have to learn my butterfly cats,I would really like for my whole yard to be a sanctuary for butterflies and birds. So far I have succeeded in providing for the birds,they really like my yard,and I have already seen birds this year I didn't see last year ,my goal is to learn more about both this year! :) Carol,I will have seed for those African Daisies at the end of the season,I potted them up with a Chocolate Mint and plan to keep them away from the others. So if you would like some, remind me if I don't contact you,you are more than welcome to them! The Gilla sure is pretty isnt it? I absolutely adore them,next year there will be lots of them,although as fast as they came up and bloomed, I probably have time this year to start some more! :) Carrie thanks so much! I only hope my gardens look as wonderful as yours by the end of the season.You are also welcome to any seeds I have at the end of the season. I will definitely post more pics, if you promise to do the same! ;) Thanks Alyse! How are things going for you? I bet things are shaping up there also for you! I have found a few deer resistant varieties I think you may like,and some I just happen to have extra seed for! ;) I will be in touch! Thanks so much, everyone! I also tend to think she's VERY cute, but maybe I'm biased? Ahhh, yes, our new "child..." I have posted pictures previously of our "first born," our Shih-tzu, Murphy. Well, now Murphy has a furry new companion, a Shih-tzu brother named Bode (pronounced BO-dee.) As if our lives weren't chaotic enough with a new baby, why not add a puppy to the mix? Here is Bode... (sorry, the lighting was a bit bad, it's hard to see his eyes...) Here are Bode and big brother Murphy playing... AND... my big news... MAKENNA IS CRAWLING!! I simply must share this video. I didn't comment on the shower curtain, because I was a bit confused. By needing an extra long curtain, I didn't know if you meant height or width? I assumed you meant floor to ceiling, but if so, how would a standard liner work, but not a standard curtain? I assumed you were using an L bracket rod mounted at standard height (looks like a standard shower/tub enclosure)? But maybe not?! Are you planning to mount a ceiling rod? Sorry, I'm just not following ,,, Well regardless, here are a few comments: 1) My number one priority would be to properly manage moisture (keep as dry as possible). 2) If at possible, I would first look to using a standard (72x72) curtain (it will be cheaper, you will have more options, and you can more easily change up the look). 3) Start with a good liner mounted at the proper height (not too short and not too long) that doesn't fly around. 4) Whatever I hung in that area, I would want it to be moisture/mildew resistent, provide ventilation/wicking, have rust proof hardware, etc As such, I would first look to a quality shower curtain, which are available in taller lengths. If looking at drapes, I would probably start with indoor/outdoor drapes. Regarding your question on the door, I would probably paint it white/neutral (or faux pine) because I would not want the door to be a focal point, but rather have it blend in. As far as color scheme ,,, on my monitor the tile looks like it has blue undertones, so maybe blue rugs and towels (with a couple of red accent towels), a pattern shower curtain (e.g. a tartan plaid with blue, gray, red, and browns). A red waste basket. Art work that has red, blue, gray, brown, etc... You'll have lots of good options!! Here is a link that might be useful: Trax ceiling shower rods

Your new daylily in your new daylily bed looks great, nice and green. Buttered Popcorn of course look marvelous! Love the roses and the covered bridge. Grandson is a cutie!

Breathtaking photos, I love the bridge too. I was supposed to go to Mount Washington on my trip a couple of weeks ago, but it was cancelled :(

oh, Celeste.these photo's are gorgeous, all of them. I love your fall photo's but, them roses are gorgeous, you have some beauties.love the daylily. and he grndson looks to be just big enough to keep you hopping to keep up with him.Hes a cutie, too. but we missing some kitties.You still have lots of pretty flowers blooming. the first photos of your walk, is that a river or a big LAKE?SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO.Thank you for taking the time to take all these great looking photos and taking the time to post them for us to injoy them. I just love scenery photo's with blooms.

The fall photos are gorgeous, Celeste. Barns are my thing, so the phot with the barn is especially appealing.

And you know I love the roses! Brother's Grimm Fairy Tale is really a pretty one, as is Caramella...in fact, they are all lovely! I hate to see it end. Your photos are always beautiful.

Buttered Popcorn is such a workhorse. Mine is having two or three blooms every day this week. I bet you really enjoyed your day with Connor. Such a gorgeous fall in your area. Our trees don't seem to be coloring up much this fall. Even the maples aren't colorful this year. My burning bushes are turning a nice red though.

Your pictures are absolutely stunning as always. Your roses are beautiful and they look so perfect. I've given up on roses because of all the spraying they need, but I do love seeing them.
I'm wondering if my mum could be Clara Curtis. Mine seems more peach than pink, but the flower is similar.
Your grandson is sure a cutie and I see he's helping you with the leaves!

Stopping in to say 'THANKS' to you all for commenting.

Judy, I don't know where the time went but Connor is 17 months old already. He is such a joy. He looks just like his daddy did when he was that age, and is just as sweet.
He already loves the outdoors and is fascinated by plants and leaves so I am hoping I have me a lil' gardening buddy
in the making! Connor didn't want to relinquish those leaves he's holding in the photo, so when Daddy & Mommy came to get him, he took the leaves home with him...LOL.

CTC...those Clara Curtis mums are ridiculously cold-hardy...in fact, they bloom only in October here. They LOVE the cold. And the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale rose was developed in Germany by Kordes and I have had great luck
growing the newest intos. by Kordes. They survive my winters better than most other floribundas.

Rita & Nancy...glad you liked the covered bridge photo.
Luckily, that bridge was high enough that the floods we got after the hurricane didn't harm it. There were a couple in my state, but more in Vermont that perished. Very sad. BTW, Nancy, had you gone on the Mt. Washington auto road you would have encountered snow at the summit. I have been up there in July & August and it was snowing! Seemed kinda odd because we were all in shorts and t-shirts. Mt. Washington has some of the worst weather conditions and highest wind speeds in the country
even though it is dwarfed by the higher peaks out west.

Jean, I know you enjoy the scenery pictures so I always have you in mind when I post them. That is a LAKE in the photo. It is the largest lake in N.H....Lake Winnipesaukee. Where I am, there are lakes everywhere and the water is crystal clean in all of them.

Kay, you have a good eye, to catch that barn so far in the distance! I like barns too, and since I pass that horse farm every day on my walk I decided it made for a good photo op.

Debra, one of the smartest things I've done this year is snatch up those 2 Buttered Popcorns. They opened 4 blooms today in the pouring rain. I have to thank you again for enabling me!

Val, I'll bet yours is Clara Curtis. My soil has a tendency to bring out the lavender and purples in flowers, but other places I have seen it growing it was a peachy pink. Could just be a difference in soils.

Thank you CELESTE,I really do injoy the photos of the scenery. that mount washington must be preetty high if it had snow in July and august.years ago, we went to colorado, and went up on PIKE's PEAKa mountain thats 14,110 feet high. ad went in august and they had closed the road that gos up it because of a Blizzard and they had just opened it before we got there,and i thought thats nuts, snow in august? but before we got to the top and back down on level ground,I was wishing they had kept it closed.its was very narrow road,and full of snow, and ice.when we got to the top. my hubby was so scared he wanted to hurry up and get back down,and my children had never seen snow before, so I got out and let the kids out and made them each a snowball,and they were thrilled to see snow for the first time, I let them get ine the car with their snowballs. and they kept putting it from hand to hand as their hands was about frozen.and it was much more scarey coming down off that mountain and never again, did I want to drive up on a mountain.

JEAN, haha....I know exactly how you felt! I was born in south Georgia and we moved here when I was a teenager...I was used to FLATland and had no experience with mountains.
My first trip up Mount Washington my brother was driving (and had just gotten his license) and the road up was so windy and there were no guard rails. I was screaming in the back seat that we were going to die and had to lay down on the floor of the car so I wouldn't see anything. I thought I was going to pass out. It was snowing at the top and that part I thought was cool since I had never made a snowball either. But then, we had to come DOWN the mountain and that was even scarier. My brother pretended that we lost our brakes and thought it hilarious.

I have gone back up a couple times since but not with my brother...LOL. I am used to mountains now and I do a lot of mountain hiking, but I will never forget how scared I was that time.
