New ideas pop in my head

This all started because I already have that order in for daylilies in the spring from Phil Korth and because I was looking at the Lily auction listings for no other reason than looking. Was no intending to buy. But ideas pop into my head.

These thoughts, masquerading as great ideas, pop into

my head. They seem to come from nowhere and just grow until I decide I will

do something about them. That's how my garden

projects come to be. However, this last batch of ideas that I just got are

not my usual new ideas for projects but new ideas for daylilies.

Now this fall I have already bought some new plants for spring shipment. I

already have over 300 daylilies here so that means I will just have more

lovelies in my garden. A big major spring purchase is from Phil Korth whose

work I just love and who hybridizes the most incredible daylilies for

northern gardens. One plant I am picking up is TEARS FOR GUS a stunning

purple with white edge that I love the picture of. Now Phil said TEARS FOR

GUS is an outstanding parent and passes on the white edge to many seedlings.

What do I already have growing here in my garden but WESTBOURNE SILVER

LININGS, a deep purple stunner with a white edge that was on my personal

favorite top ten flower list this year. It just popped in my head from out

of nowhere that these two should be crossed to explore purple with white

edges.

Now that was not enough for my brain. The next idea I get is about another

Korth intro I am getting this spring, his 2009 intro ROCKS CRY OUT. Just a

very unusual daylily. Very ruffled bi-tone. I haven't quite gotten it out

of my head since Phil's

newsletter came with the spring intros. Then I was looking at stuff on the

Lily Auction like I sometimes do and afew days ago there is a listing for

BASS GIBSON. I look at the picture of BASS GIBSON and it just immediately

pops into my head that this is the cross for ROCKS CRY OUT. Mind you, I know

nothing about any of this, it just popped into my head. So what do I do? I

buy BASS GIBSON on the LA of course.

So, next year I will try to make these two crosses and hope for the best. I

mean, its not like I know what I am doing. My very scientific approach (not)

as to why these are great crosses is because it just stuck in my head that

they are a great idea. I swore I was never going to hybridize. Just like

earlier this year I swore I was not going to buy any more daylilies until

next year. Oh well, its not as if I am going to have lots of seeds. Maybe

only a pod each. Or two. Or three. Maybe I will forget the whole idea come

spring.
