brr. we had a slight dusting of snow, which has already disappeared. Temps this morning were below 30, so I wrapped my wintersown containers last nite.

I'm glad I hadn't yet planted anything out.

Here another several inches of snow this morning also in a zone 5, Hudson river is flooding. High temp today a sunny 45. Hostas were smart, do not show any pips yet. 4 inches snow supposedly is poor man's fertilizer.
But most of the snow has melted away by the bright sun. Tomorrow will be in the 50s, so some day I will see pips. Bernd

28 degrees here last night. Yes even in California the weather is unkind at times:) I'm so sick of the weather fluctuations and this long, cold spring we're having I could scream. 29 tonight and then we should be seeing a warming trend after that. I brought the smaller potted roses into the laundry room last night. The others onto the front porch with a frost cover and left my little portable greenhouse out back zipped up tight. Everything seems fine so far. I will probably try to plant some mini's this weekend if for no other reason than I need the space to start seeding vegetables in my wee greenhouse. Kate

Helen, Our weather seesaws back and forth so much in March and April (and sometimes even in February) that it drives me crazy. If I wait for the weather to stabilize before I plant stuff, the daytime highs are getting ridiculously high by then. Thus, I plant when the soil temps reach the right range and then just try to cover up plants on potentially frosty or freezing nights. I know that in March we have had several days where it hit 85-87 degrees at our house, but still have had nights in the 20s this week, and had temperatures in early March of 10 degrees one night and about 14 or 16 degrees another night. It drives me up the wall. I hate having to worry endlessly about the occasional freezing nights, but I'm not going to wait until May to plant...because in the same week we have our last night near freezing in May, we'll likely start hitting high temperatures in the 90s. It makes growing tomatoes and getting a good harvest extremely challenging some years. I just cannot be one of those people who put their tomato plants in the ground at the end of April or in early May and then gets the main harvest in August or September. I have to have fresh tomatoes all the time! It is my own fault. Once you have achieved tomato harvests in June, you start pushing to harvest the fruit in May, and once you do that....you want fruit in April, etc. I'd grow them all winter in the greenhouse if the greenhouse tomatoes had good enough flavor to make it worthwhile,but they don't. I've lost all kinds of flower seedlings to early planting, so am more careful about putting them in the ground early. I usually watch for volunteer seedlings in the garden from last year's flowers, and then just sow more seed of the same kind to ensure we have plenty of them. If anything, I keep home-raised flower seedlings indoors under the grow lights much longer than I'd like to, but that's so they won't freeze back. I didn't find growing coleus (or begonias) from seed very rewarding either. They are so slow to gain a decent size, and the plants pop up in the stores in wonderful sizes while my coleus plants are still little dinky things. I tend to buy a big coleus plant I like, and root a bunch of cuttings from it. I hope we don't have excessively hot summer weather again like we had here in 2011 and 2012 either, and 2013 was no picnic either though more because of drought than excessively high temperatures, but I'd like for April to be decently warm and for the temperatures to just be stable. I never feel safe from a snow storm until Easter has passed, and Easter is still so far away. I have to slow down my planting of stuff in the ground now because I'm going to have more garden beds planted than I have row cover. I wore a coat yesterday morning when I went outside to feed the chickens around sunrise because it was cold and frosty, but by 1 pm I was working in the garden wearing a t-shirt and capris. That is a pretty typical March day here, and I always try to get the greenhouse closed up around 4 pm so it can build up a little heat to get the plants in there through the night. This week, my greenhouse temperatures on sunny days have been in the 90s with both doors open, but quickly drop to the 70s around sunset. As long as both doors were closed by 4 pm, the greenhouse will stay roughly 10 degrees warmer than the outside air temperatures overnight, as long as we had a reasonable amount of sunlight in the afternoon. Jay, Our odd weather irritates me! It isn't fair that with an average last frost date for my county of March 27th, there I sat with frost on the morning of April 28th, is it? Our forecast for Sunday night is for 44, and I bet I have frost early Monday morning too unless that forecast changes. I'll be ready this time and will either cover up tender vegetation or have the sprinkler in place and ready to turn on briefly in the early morning hours to wash the frost off the plants. You know, I wouldn't mind the odd weather so much if we were 5 or 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area in summer, but sadly that doesn't happen. Our first August here, we had a heat wave where the highs varied from 108 to 111 (113 in nearby Ardmore) for about a week....and Tim's relatives from Pennsylvania were in town visiting and they were just dying in the heat. In Fort Worth, we rarely got above 105, so 108 to 111 was a huge shock. Then, we had an "early" hard killing freeze before the end of September. Yet, some years we don't have a killing frost until mid-December. If any of you can figure out my weather and explain it to me, please do so! Y'all are burdened with the wild wind lately, aren't you? Does the wind ever stop blowing there? Gordon Graham, who you might remember as the grower of the world's largest tomato on record, used to stack two Wall-O-Waters on top of each other to protect tall plants. If I remember correctly, he put wooden surveyor's stakes inside the first WOW, hammered into the ground, for support. After the first WOW was filled, he'd place the second one on top and then fill it. Although it didn't say (that I can recall) in his little "how to grow large tomatoes" booklet, I always assumed he used 3' tall stakes so that they would give partial support to the second WOW and keep it from collapsing inward on top of the plant. If you have Marvin Meisner's "Giant Tomatoes" book, which is the best book I've read on growing tomatoes in general whether you want to grow large tomatoes or normal ones, there is a reprint of Gordon Graham's little booklet near the end of the book. My potato plants that got bit back a couple of weeks ago have finally shown some good regrowth. I was starting to wonder if they would. Chalk it up to the weather that see-saws wildly from one extreme to another. I'd be confused if I were a plant too. I'm excited that you'll be getting your plants in the ground soon. It never feels like spring is really here until you're out slaving away in the garden planting your tomatoes. That's when I feel winter truly has ended. I hope this week's cold spell is the last. However, since we had June type temperatures earlier in April, who knows what the weather will do next? We've never had frost or freeze damage here after May 3rd or 4th, so I'm eager for those days to get here so I can stop worrying about it. Dawn

Diane, Gee, I would have been thrilled with 54! Even with 44! lol My plants are going nuts....the nights are colder than average and the days are hotter than average, so the plants don't know if they should go crazy and grow like mad or stop growing completely and stall. They may have a nervous breakdown over this. Have you ever overwintered a pepper plant, even in its dormant state? I tried it this year with one red sweet bell pepper plant in a 2 gallon pot. It spent the entire winter in the garage, which is insulated but not heated. On the nights we went down to about six degrees, it dropped all its leaves but survived. It quickly leafed out again. On warm days I carried it out onto the concrete patio in full sun, and every single night I carried it back inside. Anyhow, I always heard an overwintered pepper would produce earlier. Is it true? Yes. This crazy plant had about 5 leaves when it bloomed in late January, and although that pepper is small and grew slowly, it is ready to harvest now. In the meantime, the plant has leafed out really well since the temps warmed up and it is about 18" tall and simply covered in blooms. I may try overwintering more next year...digging them up in late fall when the cold shuts down production, plopping them into 1 or 2 gallon pots, and then pruning them back by about half. It is an interesting way to get peppers started producing earlier in the spring. Paula, I did see where you had mentioned planting all those veggies already, and I was jealous. Our soil temps are great....staying steady at 70-72 or higher, but our night time temps are too low. I'll plant mine whenever the nights stop throwing us curve balls. Shifting priorities? lol At least once all the veggies are in, you can relax and enjoy the pool time. Now, don't you and Diane throw things at me, but my peppers are doing just fine. (Ducking to avoid incoming flying objects......) Jay, It was unbelievable. I opened the side door at 4:45 a.m. to let the dogs out and got hit by the cold air and thought "Oh, crap!" We had heavy fog and a very heavy dew and it made me nervous to think about how close we came to having patchy frost....I hope that was our last night in the 30s! Wow, I feel for you. We were supposed to have a frost/freeze yesterday morning. It only went to 35 or so, but there was no way to cover all these hosta had it gone any lower.

Look on the bright side, there was a year around 1870 where there was no summer. You may have a short one, but there should be a summer.

Sorry you're having such a long winter.

26 here right now. Light dusting of snow last nite, more on the way according to radar and due to start within minutes. This on top of the 2-3 inches of snow we rec'd Sunday/ Sunday night.

We went from 84 degrees Saturday to an inch of snow Monday morning. Tuesday morning it got down to 24 degrees. There are some hosta pips up, but they seem to have taken the weather in stride.

Just wait until summer, when all the zone 6 and 7 people are frying and you have relatively cool weather. Your time will come.

My two lancifolia are the only ones emerging. Had a cold night. Right now it is 28 degrees Fahrenheit.

Really enjoyed watching the link you provided. Loved hearing that song---hadn't heard it for a long time.

We were right here with you in Omaha, Ken:( We had a record low of 22ÃÂº yesterday and got right at 3" of snow as well the day before. Yipes! My old late hosta friend Scooty told me some good advice - never rake out your gardens til May 1. She keeps proving herself right! Now if I could just convince my husband of that... on March 1 he starts raking! This week I had several hosta poking up too. Sigh.

Ken, I would totally accommodate you, but with the temps flirting with freezing tonight, it will probably exact retribution for you for my cheekiness!

Oh, what the he!!, what's life if not lived dangerously and truly, you did ask for it!

Here's hoping that yours sleeps until the RIGHT moment, and then blows your mind with beauty this year. As a second thought, let's hope that we eastern zone 7ers make it through this cold snap without damage.

Maybe we northerners are the lucky ones afterall? Sorry to hear of weather damage. There's still no pip to be even dreamed of in my yard....the landscape crew at a Green Bay nursery told me yesterday that they cannot dig below 3 feet anywhere in the area...still frozen. It was my bday and I was over there trying to find a tricolor beech & Gentsch Hemlock in the snow.....my Birkenstocks did not like that, but I had great fun! Would have bought the Gentsch, but he had icy snow pompoms which I decided not to have melt in my car. No one else was there...I think the nursery people thought I was nutso!

Great Cat Stevens "broken" link, Ken. He has been my favorite singer since the 1970s and I never tire of him. Had a nice little respit from my computer work just now, listening to a few more of his songs after "Morning"...thanks!

My hostas are sitting underground where they belong. Only Choo Choo Train has sent eyes up high enough to see, and I stuck more leaves over them.

I know that so many of you have had a long, cold winter, ....but I'm glad it wasn't me this year. ;-) Usually I still have snow while other zone 5ers are posting their pips, but this year I've got hostas in various stages of growth, and they're eager to get going. Here's a couple of the biggest ones near the house:
