Comments (23)Tammy, Wow, every two weeks?! The ones I have in the house (where we keep it cool, cool, COOL) get watered once a week pretty much year round. I don't like to let them get too dry... The ones in the GH get water every few days as they're out in the heat. It's hard to keep up with the watering in the GH this time of year as I have lots of other succulents to stay on top of also. That little serpens, though, is a bugger. I've found it's a tough one to water right. The fine line between too much water, which causes the leaves to yellow and drop, and too little water, which makes them dry up, is like walking a tight-rope! It's been doing pretty good lately - I put it in the sunroom late this winter because I read they don't like it real hot, and I think between the cooler temp and the ceiling fan that blows constantly, I've got the right conditions now. Comments (23)I love all the textures of this plant in bloom. Great shots Kelly!!! I cannot wait for my little serpens to grow up. The pace of my plants growth is 6 leaves appear then 2 die back, so eventually I'll have a large plant. Aphids like serpens. I think it is almost like caviar to them. how fun to have expanded your hoya collection so fast! I'm there right behind you with 20 different hoyas. I've had my carnosa for many years, but only recently started collecting. :)

My lovely serpens motherplant:
The serpens seeds in fluffy cotton (the seeds are quite small, maybe 2 mm in lenght):
Serpens seedlings 1 or 2 days old. You can see the spindly, tiny roots starting to spread out on top of the medium.
The seedlings at one month old - still tiny, and no true leaves yet. This was in january.
And here they are today, about 2,5 cm tall (slow growers):
And at last the serpens flower buds:
And because I'm just so excited about the other hoyas flowering as well - here are pictures of my carnosa, lacunosa and budding cumingiana:
Hope it's not too much with all the pictures (and sorry about the size, I couldn't seem to find a way to edit the height and width in the html code), but it's hoyas after all - it's difficult to pick out just one or two photos of hoyas. lol :P

11 years agoThank you! :) The seedlings sure are cute! Such slow growers, but they're starting to look like small serpens plants now. They might have gotten too little light in the first few months of their lives, maybe that's why they didn't grow any true leaves for such a long time.

The serpens seeds sprouted without any problems. I just carefully picked them out of the cotton and lay them on top of moits soil, and then misted them with a spraying bottle. I used small pots (maybe 2 inch), the pots were then put inside clear plastic drinking cups with clear plastic wrapping covering the top (I poked "breathing holes" in the plastic covering). Like mini greenhouses! The success rate was close to 100%, but I weeded out the weak ones and only kept the ones that grew the most. Kind of regret not keeping them all. :/
Let's try and embed a picture of the mini greenhouse, and at the same time I can try to learn how to resize pictures from photobucket (thanks for the tip on how to do it, greedyghost)... You can see the tiniest little speck of a seedling towards the middle of the pot, and a couple of light brown seeds lying on the soil.

How exciting that you've got serpens seedling too! We must compare notes, and see what is the best way to raise these babies! :) How large are your seedlings at the moment?And do you have a lot of them?
