Unknown Rare Hoya

Hi all,

I have this beautiful hoya now and wanted to know from someone who has had this same one in their collection for a while now that is thriving for you, how it's being cared for as far as light, watering & fertilizing? I'm not sure if the care differs from most other hoyas.

I would greatly appreciate any information.

I don't have that one so I can't help you, but I'm sure others here can. I just wanted to say that the hoya is really beautiful! Congratulations and good luck with it!

What a beautiful plant! It is one of my favorites. The ID is either H. var. macrophylla or H. var.polystachya. (Though I have been told by a lady who is "in the know" that she leans towards H. var. polystachya.)
As far as the care, I have found it to be one of the most forgiving plants in my collection. I have kept it in the greenhouse in high light conditions and give it no special care. I love the variegation and texture of the leaves. I really do not think you can go wrong if you follow basic plant care instructions.

To me the weird thing about your flowers is that they look more "open" than tsangii's little button flowers. I don't know the technical terms, but yours looks like it has petal-thingies. Burtoniae leaves look almost identical (I still don't get if it's a form of tsangii or what), but supposedly that's not what the flower looks like, either. I never saw the flower since, sadly, I killed mine. But the leaves did look identical to tsangii though maybe a little smaller and more purple. Someone once said here that the true bilobata is very different from tsangii, but I don't remember why. :( Is yours an E. A.? Good luck with the mystery...! Alright Tawny, this is officially an intervention. Though... Oh gosh. I do this. Aurora, leaf shape was why I thought Chouke vs. Mathilde - Mathilde tends to be a little more round. My Mathilde has some silver speckling, but my Chouke has none whatsoever. It's a pretty thing, for sure! Denise in Omaha

Water only when you feel it give a little if you very gently press it (I don't water on schedule). I have mine growing in pumice, too, so you can just imagine how dry that is. I've lost one before---a young one that literally burst from over-watering and that kind of mistake collapses the blob over a period of hours, not days. So when you feel it is turgid, leave it alone. I have mine in dappled shade most of the day and it gets only about an hour of direct sun in late summer afternoons. I also just got a pumice pot for it. I use these for succulents and cacti that scare me lol (like cintias, arios, some euphorbias and this one).

thanks for the information, I can breath a little easier knowing it can be forgiving! To me, the leaves of
the "unknown" resemble the macrophylla, but I am no expert on the subject, thanks for the two names. Someday, I hope to get a concrete name for it.
I love the leaves too, and that delicate pink coloring but mainly I love the texture, it's really a gorgeous specimen!
Right now it's sitting next to my obovata which gets some direct sun and it does well there. Do you think "some" direct sun will hurt this one?
Otherwise, I'll give it basic care like the others.

Guess it depends on the type of sun you are talking about. If it is is morning sun, it should be ok. BUT mid day sun will risk burning those beautiful leaves of yours so you might want to be careful.

My plant does get some bright afternoon sun, but, it has been growing in the same spot for a couple years. Whatever you choose to do, you may want to consider doing it gradually.

Ok great, thank you for the info! I think I better move it further away from the afternoon sun, but with a mountain of woods right nearby, the intensity of light is not as great as it would be without it being there, but, better to be safe than VERY sorry!

I have nothing to add but just have to tell you how beautiful that is! In your picture, it looks like a delicate blend of powdery mint green and pink, and like you said, the texture.... And is that a peduncle near what looks like the beak of a rooster sculpture?? Thanks for sharing!

I didn't see the pic, but judging by the discussion this is a plant I've grown for some time.
It will take direct light all day if the humidity is high enough. At our nursery in SE Asia it's fine out in the sun. It blooms profusely when grown under these conditions, but we have near 100% humidity there.
At our nursery in South Florida I grow it under 50% shade and have found that it will burn in our sun.

I'm so glad to see this picture , because it looks like one I have , which doesn't have an ID tag.
Mine grows outside full time , with morning sun. It's getting some afternoon shade now. The leaves are beautiful and interesting. Mine is young , small and hasn't flowered yet.
No shortage of humidity here in Florida . Hoyas love the humidity. I concur with Chris on the intensity if the sun.

I think what you are seeing is just an end, there are a couple, but no buds coming of any kind as of yet.I have no idea what the flower would look like, if it ever flowers for me with fingers crossed!
The leaves do have a powdery bloom on them which surprised me, the pictures I have seen of this hoya online didn't seem to have that, but it could just be the pictures I have seen. The texture is really nice, reminds me of a raised waffle design and that pink color makes the leaves that much more interesting.

Could you please tell me the color is of the blooms? Do youave a picture of yours so I know we are talking about the same plant? I have always heard so far, that this particular hoya has not bloomed for anyone yet.

And, thank you for the others for offering their light requirements/care inputs!

We are talking about the same plant. As a matter of fact the plant shown in your initial link looks very much like it I may have grown and sold it.
I can't speak for others, but this plant blooms very well for me. The blooms are a light frosty pink.

Ok great!I wasn't sure you could see my links or not, that's why I asked about your plant matching mine. Thanks for letting me know this hoya does flower and the color as well. I will definitely look forward to seeing that someday!!!
