Nectar from kentiana

Hi all, just had to share these pictures of the huge amout of nectar produced by my H. kentiana blooms.

My DS-70 and H. brevialata, which I think have similar blooms, have not bloomed yet so I was wondering if they produced as much of this sweet stuff as the kentiana? Denise?

Hi Leon,

My kentiana is revving up to bloom, so your pics have got me all excited. Kentiana is one that has bloomed for me in the past, but it's been a stingy bloomer. It grows well, looks great, but only a bloom here, a bloom there so far... Maybe this year will be different! Is yours fragrant? I can't remember if mine was...

DS-70, my CONSTANT bloomer (I have one HUGE and one large that both bloom pretty much year-round), doesn't seem to produce any sap for me. And no fragrance - but I dont' mind because I figure the ever-blooming nature is a good trade-off. My incurvula (which I used to think was brevialata) is much like DS-70 - not in the constant bloom department, mind you, but in the no-scent, no-drippy department.

Anyway, love the pics, Leon. I'm heading to the sunroom to see if any of the peduncles have "activated" on my kentiana...

Hi Denise, it has no detectable smell to me, maybe just a slight "fresh" smell but the nectar taste very sweet and there is tons of it, maybe that is how it attracts polinaters instead of odor. My brevialata is probably incurvula also in fact that is what it was labeled when I got it but I was convinced by others.....you know. My kentiana has at least 9 peduncles now, this is the first year it has bloomed.

First, either give your hubby a lesson on moving plants to lower blinds or have him ask you to do it. My husband learned a long time ago to just let me do it to avoid the griping about broken plants and messes to clean up. The leaves will heal, but they will be forever scarred. I turn my plants regularly to encourage even growth. However, if the problem is that you only have one growth point, this is how it will grow until it either branches (which you can encourage by pinching the growth point) or you make more cuttings as it grows and plant them back in the pot. I should have scrolled down and read about other people's seed pods. Okay, I know to cover them and plant as soon as they burst open. Will keep you posted. I've been so busy this summer, I haven't had time to read the forums. The kentiana is outside hanging in a big live oak tree that has drooping to the ground limbs.

Yes Jen, mine is an EA hoya. I was very lucky to find one that was completely rootbound (not just a pot full of rooted cuttings!). The kentiana I had before this one sounds like what you are describing....it didn't grow AT ALL. About the light, you could be right....maybe it's getting enough light from the sides. Here are 2 pics of it. The first one was taken when the sun was shining bright (but you can see that the back has no light on it), and the second was taken at night with the blinds closed (you can see how the back of the plant has very dark margins). So again I'm wondering about how much of a role the light plays in those dark margins....Jen, maybe what you said about some having darker margins (with or without sun) is right - that's what I was initially thinking.
