humpback whale seeds

I won an auction at Winter Scientific of 20 seeds of Humpback Whale X Bluetonium . ..... I also won Brother Stefan OP and Dance With Me OP .. .. I sowed all on January 23. I have had great germination of Dance with Me and Brother Stefan but NOTHING from Humpback Whale.

Should I pitch it? Do you think there is any hope of germination ?

How many HW x B seeds did you plant? If none of the seeds germinated, then perhaps they weren't viable. Do you know how old the seeds are and if they've been kept in the freezer since harvest?

I recommend soaking the seeds for a day and then replanting them. Elslager did this with seeds that had not germinated and had some success. Good luck...

(By the way, the correct name is Humpbacked Whale.)

It's in the Library as Humpback Whale, and I don't think it's registered.

There was only one mature plant. It was in the garden of Paula Lehtola in Bridgewater, MA and it was shown in the tour of her garden in the AHS convention in 2011. Since that time Paula has divided it. She sold a number of divisions to recoup the $3000 she spent for it at auction, and then sent a piece to be tissue cultured. Luckily everyone at the convention took a picture of this plant before it was divided. Here's my pic. Paula said that it took some time before the whale develops it's hump. Luuk, I am glad you added a touch of color on my photo. You definitely improved it! It is nice to see the ideas of others. You are right Moc---I am "HOOKED ON HOSTA PICTURES!" LOL The hail we had a couple of weeks ago slowed me down as many of my hosta are damaged. I have grown to truly appreciate the art of photography in my journey---and even more so, fall hosta photography. A photo of fall hosta colors, with unblemished leaves is quite an effort. One of my favorite fall photos is one of Sagae in 2012. Last year I waited for the moment to be able to take another Sagae photo, but the colors never really happened due to our late frost date. And this year Sagae has rabbit damage and now has hail damage. I can really appreciate that one photo in 2012! If only I had taken a better shot of it! There is a lot to learn about photography. So Luuk thanks for sharing your knowledge and giving me an opportunity to learn.

There is a write up about the name in the Hostapedia. It is a Mildred Seaver introduction and not registered. It was confirmed by Mildred Seaver's son that it is Humpbacked Whale even though some websites and databases list it incorrectly. A division of it sold for $3,700.00 at the 2006 AHS auction.

Seeds were donated by Balitewicz to The Winter Scientific Meeting, so I do not know how they were harvested or stored. There were 20 seeds total, I planted 10 inside and I wintersowed 10... (I can explain wintersowing another time, but it is a great way to start perennials.)

I will try soaking the seeds if I can find them in the medium. smile...

Post your question on the seed growers forum. I know Bob Balitewicz occasionally posts there, and a number of folks on that forum attended the WSM. I'm curious as to how viable seed from Humpback(ed) Whale is.

If it's named Humpbacked Whale, it's because whoever named it didn't know the whale is named Humpback Whale. Just got back from Kauai and enjoyed watching the Humpback Whales. When a 40-ton whales leaps out of the water, it makes quite a splash.

'indianabob' is his user's name at the Hosta Seed Growers forum. You already posted a message there, and you can Email him. Go under 'Members', all users starting with 'i', then click on indianabob.

Since this particular hosta was never registered the name is not written in stone, and as has happened with other plants, the name can be corrected before it is registered. I'm fairly certain that will be the case with this plant, that it will be corrected to Hosta 'Humpback Whale' for the future.
