backyard work continues, some stuff still in bloom not daylilies

Im about 3/4 of the way done, I have pulled out 20 or so stumps , there is one Im having a hard time getting at as its physically attached itself around a boulder, big enough I cant move. I also had to pull about 500 sweet ferns and flag ferns!

One side is pretty much set, Ive run out of compost for this year.. so will have to finish the other side next year probably, the one side should be big enough for the roughly 1000 seedlings Im starting this year. After seeing and talking with Karol, she said she relized around 12 years ago it was the parents that mattered the most, get great parents and you will get worthy intro's eventually. So Ive revamped my whole process, its going to take 2 years to see the results, but after my visit with Karol, I relized a few things.

This took about 6 truckload of horse manure and 5 of compost, I might add a few roses here and there, I love antiques especially that come pre daylily season and share thier glory in mid june. there will be a smattering of other perrenials as well. I like to have something blooming after the daylilies are pretty much wrapped up.

Some of the stone was on site, some I get from the builder who has a pile of them. Its sweaty work to move some of these that way over 100 lbs.

Some stuff still in bloom, not much really,

Blanketflower, it blooms early, it blooms late, it blooms all the time. Its a perrenial's perrenial.

Great Blooms!!

And I'm jealous of all the space...

Put in a few blanket flowers this year and they carried on like crazy and then they died completely back and then a few weeks later new growth started poking its head up through the mulch and their blooming again.

Cosmos are awesome, I direct sow them just as the irises are starting to bloom so that by the time most of the daylilies have done their thing the cosmos start blooming and carry me thru till the first hard frost.

What you've learned from Karol, I completely agree with her, breed from good stock and things can only get better from there.. which probably explains my psuedo obsession with knowing as much as I possibly can about a cultivars genetic background.

Granted, most unwanted characteristics have been hopefully bred out... but it does help to know as much as possible about prospective parents so you're not as surprised when a cross of red X purple throws a few screaming yellow or orange seedlings.

Again, totally jealous of the space you have to work with and what you've done so far looks awesome!

A wonderful stone wall! The entry you built is very creative. I love having stone in the landscape and especially when its free ;-). We previously used a handtruck to lug the stones to build our walls and then we invested in a tractor and work is so much easier.
Your perennials look wonderful.

We are still getting new scapes here from both those that have been here for a few years and those that got planted this spring. I still have blooms opening as well. Probably about 10 are still blooming. I noticed a slow down on openings when our temps dropped. Most seeds pods are collected which the bees contributed greatly to this year.

Yes, you did the right thing planhting 18 inches apart. My daylilies on the plateau pictures are too close but I was too impatient and hated the bare look so I spaced them close in mostly groups of three. I will have to enentually take out every other group. This year I planted my daylilies 16 to 18 inches apart in the new daylily beds I made and I planted annuals in between for now to fill in. One area has a flat of Cosmos that I bought and planted between the daylilies. IN the terraces gardens not pictured here I put lots and lots of zinnias in between the daylilies plus there are other perrenials in there too. You would not believe the difference this spring from the pictures last summer. The view towards that fountain garden in back of the garage looks smashing with just the fact that the path is now green grass (hadden't seeded it yet in the pictures) and the daylilies that are growing at the base and around the fountain. The daylily plateau, which is what was referred to as the brick planter, looks even better this spring. I need to get a chance to do some weeding on it and put more mulch but it really looks good. The plateau is a pure daylily garden. Its going to be attention getting in daylily bloom season and then its just green the rest of the time.

I've been going up and down and up and down just taking in all your lovely flowers. The garden shots are great, since there is so much green in addition to the flower colors. Those of us in the no-rain zones are pretty tired of burned out brown. I do love all of them but I'll just mention Dancing With Sandra, Late Round, and Pinhill Claret Symphony. Hope there are still more late bloomers to come. I'll be watching. Avedon

I like the outlining of your bed with rocks and it sounds like you will have a nice rich bed for those seedlings. Your lucky to have so many pods. I've got only 2 pods from crosses I did this year but that is okay. I'm running out of space for new seedling beds or should I say, I'm not willing to create another seedling bed LOL. Still chugging away! Had a big setback a few weeks ago -- I had to replace the sewer line from the house to the alley. I'm lucky; most homes this would be a 30-40 foot trench -- mine was only 12 feet long. Unfortunately... it was a big trench. and right thru the middle of the beds.... I had no idea they would dig up as much as they did; they popped two 8' sections of fence and brought in a backhoe, then dug up a trench 8' wide, but 12' long and 8' deep. And dragged the earth over a comparable size space. I'd dug up some plants before they came, and rescued more just ahead of the backhoe. And they filled in the hole and compacted the dirt before they left. The real challenge is the soil they left. Unlike the carefully shifted and amended foot deep soil I built up fver the past 4 summers, I'm now dealing with clay and rocks -- worse than when I moved in! But I'm making progress, and hope to have some updated shots soon!

I love the entrance, it is going to be a lovely garden.
I have several blanketflowers & helenium around, but my cosmos did not reseed this year. The picotee is my favorite, I think I did see a plant or 2 of the solid pink. I used to have the bright orange too. They reseeded heavily for years, not sure why they have stopped.

OH wow, that sure is a lot of work you are doing there. But it is looking so good and will look stunning all planted. You make my projects look small, I just wish I had that much room. Great job!
