6 month old seedling blooms-First for me

I went to check on my seedlings at a property that is a loaner from a friend and found 7 seedlings that sat in tubs until I had time to plant them during the week of Aug 15th had put up scapes. One had bloomed sometime before I got there and another was in bloom yesterday. It is an ugly bloom, the temperature was 46F and it is such a tiny plant that I am surprised that it bloomed at all. It is a first for me. After taking pictures I broke off the scapes. The crosses were Jelly Maker x Reyna, Wolverine x Iwanna Piranha, Heartbeat Of Heaven x Priscilla's Smile, Heart beat Of Heaven x Karen Stephens, Dragon Fang x Randy Stephens and Woman At The Well x Unk. Wow!! Six months IS pretty amazing!! That must be exciting!
Do you think it means they're especially vigorous growers?

I don't know. But I have marked them and plan on tracking them. They sat in tubs until August when I planted them, then up rooted and still managed to put up scapes a month later -amazing. The thing that gets me is how small they all are. This was the last thing I expected. I did not plan on having much bloom next summer because of when I planted them and their size. Mike.

Poor thing, fancy being buried alive like that, it's no wonder he struggled!! DR seeds need to be soaked no more than a couple of hours and planted horizontally just barely covered with 'compost'....as you have now found out! I do hope he goes on to thrive and prove himself a worthwhile plant for you, keep us updated on hs progress please. Can't quite tell from the pic but the top of the mix looks like large particles/pebbles, is the mix alll like that? If so, bear in mind the seedlings root system is small/fine so they need smaller particles around their roots for optimum growth till the roots get bigger and stronger...just trying to help with a possible suggestion :) If i'ts just a top dressing, then forgive me!!Good luck. I guess its the end of the growing season for you, but next year will be the start of an even better growing season. 35f at 9:00 pm is pretty cold for sure. Im still amazed at how big your plants get in that short of a growing season (since some of your plants grow better than those in the sothern states). It must be getting very good care. Wow another one is branching too. You are defiantely going to have alot of flower opportunities once it gets old enough (many late next summer, and if not next summer, then probably the summer after). And you already have one blooming, which is great (and probably pretty cool to see it blooming without any leaves on it!). I counted all the pots I have (not counting the indoor pots) and I have 87 (so its better than 100, and Im only bringing in about 40). Not all those pots are big though (some are just hanging baskets, others im trying to root some cuttings in). I dont know how I ended up with that many, but at least I wont be doing too much buying next year (only if I find something really nice). The weather here has improved over the last day or 2, last night only went down to 64 for a low temp and highs have been in the 70s. The 10 day forecast shows no sign of frost for my area yet, so I still have some time to take all my plants in. My pretty princess plumeria, buds are growing very fast now and im hoping to see some blooms in about 2 weeks. Good luck.

Nice thread, beautiful plants! Good job! Yes, it's perfectly normal for seedlings to be very hit and miss with regards to looking like the parent plants or not. Only grafted plants or other cuttings are clones of the original. For one thing with seeds you don't always know if they are selfed or cross pollinated with something else entirely. A lot of sellers don't tell you! Also with white flowers you are dealing with the alba gene with is an 'on or off' switch that masks the real color of the flower. /Some/ hybridizers work very hard to line breed very specific colors through many generations and thereby get much higher results looking similar to the parent plants. But most do not. Anyway, I would be /delighted/ to get such diversity from a white seed parent! All of your plants turned out to be quite lovely, whether they are what you wanted or not. Gosh that sure is a big bloom for such a tiny plant and small scape. As the weather was so cold I am not surprised the bloom was not stunning but it see potential for next year.

Congratulationds Mike on the babies. If I were you, I would be really excited about blooms next year.. I had a bloom on one about that age but it was to puny to stand up.. Ellie

Thank you. I am really loooking forward to seeing them in bloom next summer and finding out if they are hardy. I am planning on tracking them for awhile, I guess I am excited because I have never had blooms on such small plants. Mike.

Wow, all that energy from a wee one. I had 2 prolifs on each of 2 scapes of "Enon" this year. Each put out buds. I am sure they were drawing from the energy of Momma. I let one bloom. The weight of the bloom pulled the prolif off the scape. I cut off the other buds to save those prolifs. It is just so amazing to see such life. Congrats. Hope it goes on to amaze some more.
