Daylily Journal Fall 2011

I got my Fall 2011 Issue of The Daylily Journal today. IT IS WONDERFUL!!!! It has the best pictures of some of the new 2012 intros for sale. I don't think they are even on the hybridizer's web site yet. Sooooo Beautiful!!!!

There's an article by Karol Emmerich that shows some of the future intros that are just plum amazing. Two have a patterned eye to the point of being a design!!!! One looks like a Christmas tree, the other looks like an orchid bloom. They both are on really dark redish purple daylilies with white edges. I've seen many pictures with patterned eyes, but none with actual designs!!! Oh well, now I'm hooked on another style of daylily. I had just started reallllllly wanting some of the newer ones with patterns, and now this! Ok, I'm going to the bank tomorrow and taking out a second mortage on the house. That's the only way that I know of to be able to get what I want. Reackon I'll be able to get one without my DH signature? I'm just quite sure he won't agree to this. He has been a sweatheart about helping me buy so many bags of Miracle Grow garden soil to repot all 850 pots of daylilies that must be redone. But, I'm afraid he will draw the line on any new investments.But, I am having these pains of anxiety from seeing all these new intros!! Wonderful colors and big bold eyes and edges. They have really got me hooked.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago and agree it is really wonderful this time. A lot of hybridizers seemed to put pictures of their new intros in ads this time. There are several really super articles in this Journal, as mentioned.
Don't forget to order your issue of the new AHS Publication, Landscaping with Daylilies. I have previewed about 30 pages of it and seen some of the pictures, and I couldn't wait to order my copy - just did so on the Online Store. You save money if you pre-order the book now.

I remember when she posted images of the Christmas tree one. It immediately went on the Must Get It When It's Available list.

I ordered mine through my club this morning. I have to add to Julie's comments. The book is edited by Oliver Billingslea, and if you haven't read anything by him, you've really missed out.

He used to edit The Dixie Daylily, which is Region 14's newsletter. Region 14 is Alabama and Mississippi and, while there are areas in the northern parts of those states that get cold and where dormants do well, I think you'd all agree that Region 14 is a far cry from my own Region 3. Yet I subscribed to that newsletter because Oliver was such a superb editor; he wrote and photographed many of the articles as well, and each one was a treat to read.

I have some daylilies in 1 gal. pots that I bought on sale ($3-5). Can I overwinter these in their pots just placed on the ground with some straw mulch around them? I don't have the garden space right now to sink all the pots in the ground. What do you think? I am in S. Ontario, zone 5b. Since I didn't pay very much for these, I won't be too concerned if they "croak" over the winter, but I am hoping the majority will survive, even just to donate to our local plant sale in May/2011.

I read the whole thing, it was amazing, I could not stop, and then later discovered there were more articles. That one and the other two prints, plus all the other good news from the AHS all for only $30 / year. I read several articles twice, should continue that. As a new member I got a $15 coupon to buy hostas at participating vendors like Naylor. Is there an option to read past Journals, I did not come across that yet. I remember someone wrote that we can not read on-line old printed versions (but can buy them), but there was another or more on-line versions I believe. (the AHS forum seems to be inactive?) I noticed that the left column on the Member page is no longer clickable? Bernd

Hosta pic in the AHS journal

I was trying to put face with the name of the hosta I won in the First Look auction ending in Feb. That is when I realized there are TWO of them, one with Livingston taking the picture in the HostaLibrary. I tried to view again the description of the plant I bid on, but cannot get it again. I think it said the parentage of this one included Climax? But just so I know one from the other when it is shipped, and my records are correct, I'll be happy. DonR, do you know if the After Glow you linked above was in the First Look auction in Feb? Or was it Afterglow (one word).

I just found my journal in the PO today. Can't wait to devour it. The first article I read was the one by LaVere Webster's historic garden. It is such a pleasure to get to know more about some of the people I "know" from the various robins.

And those 2012 intro's WOW!!!
Did you notice that toothy "Spacecoast Chomp Chomp" from Kinnebrews and "Hooked" from Floyd Cove? What great edges on narrow forms!

Can't wait to read Jim Murphy's article and Karol Emmerich's and....well, better go sit down & get started!

Got mine in the mail yesterday too ... the patterns on Karol's daylilies are amazing. Now I need to find some on my favorite flower type, UF's!

Mine finally came today. Beautiful daylilies inside...I can get into trouble lookingat these...that is where I saw My Chihuahua Bites and "had to have it".
