The new front yard Mini Terraces - Pics

Here is the front yard mini terrace project with the hardscape done. It really turned out well. Its done in belgian blocks cemented together.

Long view. The front plants there are two rows of daylilies along the front stacked stone wall. Then what used to be is that it went uphill from just those daylilies. Now it is level.

Closeup of the section that was taken out and redone! I have the 7 daylilies that were there before the redo back in there now but forgot to get pictures.

Now looking at the long view from the opposite direction.

I plan to put daylilies in the terace boxes at both end. The Tall beared iris at the end near the stairs in the area were the sedum plant is. Then will be buying new Oriental lily bulbs to add here in the front, off to either sides. Then will still be keeping the zinnias in the middle of the two terrace boxes as I love the way its been with zinnias each year. Spring bulbs of daffs and tulips will be planted along in there. Then I have still not decided on what exactly will be immediately in back of the daylilies that are already there.

Nancy- I didn't think about it until you pointed it out but the tulips really are just in time for easter. Not a big deal for me now but it brings back memories of when I was a child. My dad really loved tulips and always had some planted. My mom and I always had to stand in front of the tulip display for in our easter outfits for pictures on Easter Sunday. I have always loved tulips as long as I can remember and I am sure that it goes back to these childhood memories. Christine- The tulips are the Scheepers Early Tulip Mix. When they started blooming this spring with the purple tulips, I was surprised to see that color. I went back to their website and checked again and sure enough, it was supposed to be a mix of hot colors like red, yellow, orange and blends but no purple or pink. But I like the purple in there, I think it looks good so I don't mind. The terracing does make it easier to show off the plants plus I can squeeze lots more in than I ever could if I had a flat yard. I am really glad that front yard space is terraced as it shows off the bulb disply so well. I had to look up camassia as I have never heard of it. Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't appeal to be at all.

Marshall, I appreciate the heads up. I suppose it was bound to have happened sooner or later. I have posted quite a few pics over the last few years, and new it was a risk that someone might swipe one. I figure though, I can always go in the back yard and take another one that looks bigger and better next Spring, and its funner sharing them. Kmanzfive, the Pinus aristata 'Lemon Frost' was selected by Don Howse from porterhowse I believe. It's growing 2-4" a year for me right now. It's supposed to be frosted yellow in the Summer, but has never really colored up really well for me. It's still a favorite though because it has stayed small and I really like Pinus aristata. New Half Round Terraced Planters Finially Done! -pics

As to the contruction of the planters, I bought those perracing pavers at Home Depot (both the larger and new smallewr sizes). They are made to be stacked for projects such as this. Each one has a lip edge that you slide in place over the next one. When the soil is backfilled, it keeps it all in place. You have to make sure you keep them level, especially critical on the first row. Plus you have to put a row inground or partially inground, depending on how high you are going. The roses were sitting here in pots so I wasted no time in planting them. That very first smallest planter has my MARGO KOSTER polyantha and the second has my WING DING polyantha with the tiny band of EYE PAINT in back of it. Those two polyanthas I bought locally. Then I had HAPPY CHAPPY, WILL-O-THE-WISP and CARPET OF COLOR, so I put all three in the last one. Too many for the size of the planter, will be needing to move the middle one (WILL-O-THE-WISP) probably. But I had them all dug up from the working and had to do something. To move roses, water, water, water the day before so that the root ball is moist and dig up. If its hot or the rose is very large, it will drop all its leaves (just keep on watering) but after awhile it will grow new ones.

I had the idea of the trellis and honeysuckle before I even put in the daylily garden. Since I am nuts for vining honeysuckles and have about twenty of them, I thought this would be a great spot for the trellis with honeysuckle idea. Geez, I am sooooo impatient for next year when I can see these daylilies bloom.

I do really like it, the way it goes up with the stairs, and looks like you ending up with more planting room :)The variety of plants will look really good.
The stone looks really good. Did you put in any drainage, or did it not need that ?

That is fantastic! I like the stones. What beautiful pictures you will have.

That shows how smart you are to expand you space upward and get more squre-footage but in a lovely way. Yoiu go Girl!

That is lovely Rita, lots of new planting room hooray. I am still working on my big bed, it kind of came to a stand still with the hot weather, I am glad we are beginning to cool off a bit. I plan on working in the yard most of the day Monday.

Rita. What a fine job. It looks great. Where do you get all the energy? I keep looking at overgrown portions of my gardens that need to reworked. Well, I guess I have no excuses. Do you have any problems with the red lily beetle in your area? It has arrived here just during the last couple years and we have to hand pick the little guys. They are a real pain. I guess you'll be planting more dl's....:)....cheers, lloyd

I have been working on that front yard area this weekend and its already looking better. I just can't believe how much more room I have there to plant now than the workable space I had before.

Cindy, it doesn't need any sort of special drainage, any extra water just draines thru the bottom because its just the walls with soil in there.

LLoyd- No lily beetles here fortunately. I hope they never get here as I have so many lilies all over the yard.
