There are no full sun Crotons. However, Gold Dust (Aureo Maculatum) will take considerable sun, but it will have somewhat smaller leaves. Yellow Excurrens will take much more sun than Gold Dust but it's a harder to find in the big box stores.

I can't resist the gold dust so I got a few yesterday but I need to watch the angle of the sun a bit more before I actually plant them.

Is there such a thing as too much yellow in a garden??:) I seem to be yellow-crazed lately and even though it appeals to me ( I also like orange, I have three geigers and they put out these gorgeous orange blooms...I seem to be getting another bloom as we speak!) can I overdo it by putting ,say, five gold dust crotons kinda close together?
This will be in the front of my house.

Also, do you recommend pruning crotons? Is it better to let them get bigger?

I planted 12 of them from 6" pots in the same hole, ten years ago. The colony has been trimmed several times but it's still over 9' tall and equally as wide:

I'd respectfully disagree about there being 'no' full sun crotons. My workplace has them all around in full sun without any pampering. Ricky, there are types you named and others. Ray works out of this bldg a lot too and could back me up.

I think the answer would be, as long as the sun lovers get enough moisture they flourish. I will try and get you pictures.

One more question: are the base of those crotons with leaves or is it bare(like a trunk)...is there any way to maintain them growing and keep the leaves at the bottom or are they just genetically not a bush???

You can keep cutting them and they'll get bushy to some degree, but remember, Crotons are really just small trees or very leggy shrubs. I underplant them with ferns to hide the trunks.

Junglegal - Yes, you can grow certain Crotons in full sun, but the leaves are going to be much smaller, the colors not as bright, and over the long term, they won't grow as well. All Crotons like "shade at noon", most prefer shade for the better part of the day. I have "Cup & Saucer" around my mailbox. The leaves average 1" or less. The same Croton in half day shade has leaves over 6" in diameter.

They're on the south side of the garden and get sun from around mid-morning to early afternoon. However, there's a 25' Bismarck palm on one side and a 20' triple Foxtail on the other, so the sun is rarely direct. There's also a knocker head right in the middle of the colony so it gets heavy irrigation when the system is on.
