My Blue Angel disappeared !

I had a huge Blue Angel that last year I kept noticing leaves lying on the ground detached. I kept thinking it was the deer walking through and breaking them but the job was too neat to be a trampling.
Then one day all the leaves were just breaking off (all the way down at the ground) and there was nothing left. I was sure it would re-grow shortly but it didn't!!
I have never killed a Hosta in my life ! I didn't think it was possible. They are so easy. What could this be? A fungus?
I doubt it will be back this year.

if there were no roots.. voles .. you wouldnt happen to be east coast ???? see any tunnel tracks in the grass after snow cover????

if roots and no leaves ... deer ...

if just a rotting mass of crown.. water damage ... followed by rot ....

if none of the above.. martians ...

Ps: hey!!.. when did this happen.. and do you know what southern blight is?? .. that would have been july/august ....

I had that separating leaves on several plants over the last years. Those plants usually were located at a low spot, crown 2 inches or so underground. I think it was crown rot with the leaf stems rotted off where they join the crown. I hope it will help that I washed off the crown, 10% bleach bath, plant it higher like on a little berm with crown showing. I just bought a bottle of Bayer Advanced Disease Control which I will use to spray with some plants and spots every few weeks.

you asked me.. pappy gave you the answer ... the potato like crown needs to be at soil level ... the little pips within one inch of the top of the soil ... if planted too deep ... as little as 2 inches ... the plant will waste too much energy trying to get above the soil.. many will fail if too deep... crown .. pip.. eye.. petiole... cordate ... lanceolate.. all terms of art ... may as well start learning them .. you have bought your first hosta.. addiction is not far behind ... so you may as well start learning the terms.. lol ... find the hosta library ... there used to be drawings and stuff to start you on your way toward knowledge ... BTW .. while you are there research HVX virus.. especially the pix of such .... there are some mass marketers that sell virused plants.. especially if the packaging refers to bulbs.. i would perhaps not trust them ... if your plants show any sign of such .... destroy them.. NO MATTER HOW COOL THEM LOOK .... if you do catch the hosta fever.. we can recommend many great mail order sellers ... good luck .. come back often ... ken PS: blue angel can get up to 4 feet high.. and 6 feet across ... but it will take 5 to 7 years .... plant it where you can leave it for that long ...

Heck, Don, what's another hosta more or less among friends? Go for it. But I was listening to your reason to make another choice. if they HAD been alike....my candidate for one that would also be different from Blue Angel. And that is Clear Fork River Valley. It is far removed from the sophisticated graces of Blue Angel, with its orderly tailored look. It is rough, Rambo with a three day beard, fast growing, apparently slug proof, a rather roundish leaf instead of the pair of blue angel wings. If you check the Hosta Library, the color of mine is like the 3d picture from the top, decidedly a blue tint. Nothing smooth about it. Crinkled up as much as broccoli! And mine is entering its 2nd year here in this picture. So. yeah, if Blue Umbrellas had been just like Blue Angel, ........ So....why not get Clear Fork River Valley too? Have all three. You know what they say about good things coming in threes....

Hi Melissa, Blue Mammoth tends to be frosty blue, but not so much on Blue Angel. Blue Angel has a very distinct elongated/spear shape to it, with a pointed tip, so is easy to identify if you can post a picture. Chris

What a disappointment to lose a big Blue Angel. I just did a google search for southern blight (as Ken suggested) and some of the images there appear to look like what you describe. If there is nothing there now it will be difficult to diagnose what happened. Can you do some poking around to see what is left? Are other hostas coming up in your zone?

Hey, I know what southern blight is, lost my gorgeous The Razor's Edge to that stuff within a couple of days. On August 6 it looked great. On Aug 21, it looked like the picture below.

It showed up quickly, looked like tiny orangy balls of Osmocote pelleted fertilizer making a mass all around the plant. Poor circulation of the air, high humidity, contribute to its presence. I tossed pot and all to get rid of the stuff. And, I moved my hosta into a better area of my garden.

If your process was much longer, and showed no visible infestation of anything, then I don't think it was southern blight.

Dig it up and look at the roots. If you think it's a goner anyway, might as well learn on a dead plant what did it. Might save the rest of the hosta nearby.

Sounds like Southern Blight to me. I had a hosta do the same. Chris from Hallsons recommended a spray that I bought at Lowes, but I can't recall the name of it. It's one that you use connected to the hose. When the three feet of snow in my back yard melts and I'm able to get back to the shed, I'll post the name of the stuff that got rid of it.

Southern Blight is soil borne and will move down slope.

Bayer Advanced Disease Control contains tebuconazole, which is listed to treat Southern Blight in some articles. I will be using it this year to treat all spots where I had crown rot. I could not buy it locally, had to order it via internet.

It wasn't voles, blight, slugs, or aliens.

It was the neighbor's Elegans - in the side yard - with the RoundUp !!!

She saw that Blue Angel was taking up prime real estate and sabotaged yours.

Better do as she says and fill the spot with an Elegans of your own. :p

Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to encourage another to embrace the great blue/green matron.

Excuse my jaded humor.
