Blue Angels and the Airshow

Tomorrow and Sunday the Blue Angels will be back after a long hiatus. They only come every four years to start with, but with the war, it's been awhile. It'll be in Smyrna at the airport. I'm sharing the next part because I am so excited!!!!!!!!! My niece's boyfriend's (my future nephew) parents own the airport. They're giving us tickets to the airshow, VIP tent, and... drumroll... please.... the reception for the Blue Angels!!!!!!!! Oh My GOSH! Must be the daughter of an navial aviator in me, but it'll be the first time I'll be star struck. Wow. Blue Angels... teeeheee!

I've seen 2 of their shows and was awestruck each time. We were right down in front and watching those jets zip by at what felt like eye level and smelling that exhaust and the noise...well nothing can explain it. I don't like to fly,but I could watch the Blue Angels or the Canadian Snowbirds anytime. I'd be star struck too Robin. Have a wonderful time.

No wonder we can't see the the Blue Angels today, you hijacked them! I will watch the airshow and the fireworks today, it's "Thunder over Louisville" time. Just hope that the cloud cover disappears or at least moves a bit higher. Have to take a winter jacket and a rain poncho instead of last years sun visor.

Ken, I assume you mean size of your palm. Else, what are giving yours - Vitameatavegamin (I Love Lucy reference). Craigbear - Zilis lists leaves approx 5"x4" for Blue Cadet with clump 15" high x 38" wide; and for Blue Angel- leaves approx 16"x12" and clump 32" high x 70" wide. For me, Blue Cadet is fast growing - in 2 years you should have a nice clump. More blue-green than blue. Pic below is from '08 -- was probably sprouting 4 divisions/eyes in spring '06. My Blue Angel is planted in mostly shade under an oak canopy and is slow to get big (like many of the big blues it seems). Pic below is from June 09 - clump I started with was good size and planted in 06. Distance between back set of trees is probably 8-9'. I did what Ken suggests - found a spot where I wouldn't need to move it. Paul

you asked me.. pappy gave you the answer ... the potato like crown needs to be at soil level ... the little pips within one inch of the top of the soil ... if planted too deep ... as little as 2 inches ... the plant will waste too much energy trying to get above the soil.. many will fail if too deep... crown .. pip.. eye.. petiole... cordate ... lanceolate.. all terms of art ... may as well start learning them .. you have bought your first hosta.. addiction is not far behind ... so you may as well start learning the terms.. lol ... find the hosta library ... there used to be drawings and stuff to start you on your way toward knowledge ... BTW .. while you are there research HVX virus.. especially the pix of such .... there are some mass marketers that sell virused plants.. especially if the packaging refers to bulbs.. i would perhaps not trust them ... if your plants show any sign of such .... destroy them.. NO MATTER HOW COOL THEM LOOK .... if you do catch the hosta fever.. we can recommend many great mail order sellers ... good luck .. come back often ... ken PS: blue angel can get up to 4 feet high.. and 6 feet across ... but it will take 5 to 7 years .... plant it where you can leave it for that long ...

Oh, they're fantastic, aren't they? We saw them last year and want to see them again. The first day (Saturday) we sat in the crowds being drizzled and rained on and the organizers finally canceled the remainder of the show, including the Blue Angels. They announced in the Sunday paper that they'd honor everyone's tickets, so we went back (45 minute drive) and instead of joining the crowds again, we just put our chairs up in an airport field near the site and had the greatest wide-angled view of the show. We brought ear plugs for ourselves and a set of noise-canceling headphones for our 2-year-old and he sat on Daddy's shoulders had a fantastic time. We were able to get out of the parking lot quickly since we didn't have far to walk to our car and avoided the crowds that ended up waiting hours to leave. What a great time we had! I have read that Blue Angel does well in the sun. I am not sure if this was from the sun or when the plants were leafing out we had a very hot spell. I would prefer not to move Blue Angel but if this is what would happen every year I guess I would have to. What are your thoughts? ==>>> my thoughts ..... well .... whoever wrote that didnt live in my MI .. our MI .. especially come july and august.. which will be worse than the 100 degrees yesterday ... move it ... whenever you get the chance.. try to drown it in the meantime ... ken

Saw them years ago at El Toro and enjoyed the show. There were also bi-planes and others doing aerobatics plus a lot of air museum planes to get up close to. Have fun and take pictures.

When we went,one of the oddest performers was a man sitting in a lawn chair,which was flying around,way up in the sky.I still laugh when I think about it.

I love the Blue Angels, wish I could be there with you.
They are a class act both on the ground and in the air.

It was cold, very windy and cloudy, but our spirits were bright. My face is scarlet from getting sunburned and my lungs are filled with jet fuel, yea! Jan, I thought of you the most (LF was quite impressed with wingwalking and even moreso when I knew someone who has done it)! Sorry we stole them anneliese. You don't understand how much we needed them. We airnuts were in complete withdrawal after nine years of not seeing them.

Just as well that they did not come to Louisville. Our cloudcover was so low that they would not have been able to do most of their maneuvers. It was a great show despite the grey, windy and cold day. There is always next year and the fireworks were really out of this world.
