Mildred Seaver has passed.

I just wanted to let the community here know of her passing. She left a legacy of fantastic plants and stories and will be missed by all.

Our hosta community is the better for her enormous contribution. The American Hosta Society forum says that she registered 38 new hostas, including notably Christmas Tree, Komodo Dragon, and the Sea series.

Obviously, QOTS is my favorite Seaver hosta. One got Cleo'd in 2012, and survived by a thread. So, I bought another in 2013, just in case the one Cleo mangled didn't survive. Then, at the end of the season in 2013, I bought 2 on the season close-out at 2 for 1 and planted them together. So, it appears that I have three QOTS. That's interesting. All I have to show of Seaver is pips. That, however, is not too interesting. I have Komodo Dragon (maybe did not survive the winter), and Humpback Whale. I'll figure out what to do with it when it gets too big for the pot. bk

Solberg is part of his so-called Longiana series. These hosta are the result from an initial cross dating back to 1997, when Solberg had a H. sieboldiana reblooming later in the year. He decided to cross with H. One Man's Treasure and called the seedlings 'Longiana's', referring to the Tardiana's of E. Smith. But all resulting seedlings grow up to mediocre plants. Solberg used those seedlings in 2001 to produce a second generation of seedlings, and registred 4 of those seedlings, amongst those registrations Hosta 'Sun Shower', a yellow Longiana. This plant is an excellent yellow, with nice curly leaves that have good substance. SQUASH CASSEROLE in honour of Mocc, bless her heart. I keep track of eyes and keep an Excel spreadsheet of what year it was planted, where it is planted (which bed), where I purchased it and how many eyes it comes up with each year. It does get hard to count them and I'm sure I'm not 100% accurate on the ones that have "many" eyes. But, close enough for me to know it is at least increasing and doesn't need to be moved or dug up. My family and friends tell me I have too much time on my hands. Can you imagine? I have no idea why they would say such a thing....haha

I didn't know Mildred, but it appears she led a grand life and will be missed by many.

From her son Charlie this morning....

Mildred Seaver, one of the founders of the New England Hosta Society and a prolific hosta hybridizer for many years, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011 at age 98. She had a full life that was made richer by her many gardening friends, especially those who shared her love of hostas. In fact she often said she loved the people met through her gardening more than the plants, awards, etc.

A celebration of her life will be held from 10 AM -12 Noon on Saturday March 19th at Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Rd. Wilmington, DE., the retirement community where she had resided for the past 9 years. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mildred’s memory to the American Hosta Society, P. O. Box 7539, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.
