Permanent Wave

Great Flowers but needs sun for them to be like this.

Cool Hand Luke, the very thin margin is distinctive but needs to be seen close up. This is right by a patio table and one of the few plants I've never moved since planting. It is a sport of Tokadama Flav. which I also have. I would replace Cool Hand Luke first and without a second thought if I ever had to.

It also has great flowers.

If that isn't enough, it has good fall color.

Are the flowers on Permanent Wave white? They are lovely and if so, for that reason only, I would get one.

Dark Star and Party Favor...

I agree with josh, I love both dark star and party favor.
Another fav of mine that is sort of obscure is margin of error.

'Dark Star' looks to be winning a lot of points. I'm going to have to look into that one.

Lots of good choices.

I agree w/ Paul. I didn't give the plant much credit until Chris from Hallsons showed us a picture as a favorite. I am not sure if there is others w/ as much color saturation.

Twilight is out there. I think alot of people think it is 'Fortunei Aureomarginata'. It is a tetraploid sport of F.A.. However, when they are young there are many similarities making it look common on the shelf.

Nice picture! I wish I could grow some Jap maples here. I do have some young Korean Maples; close as I can safely get for now. A downside to the Korean's is the seedpods. I would imagine there are some hybrid cultivars getting close to withstanding zone 4.

Swmo, love that photo. What a tranquil setting! Makes me want to sit down on that bench and soak it in for a while.

Sundancer! This is a plant that I found several years ago at Lowes. (Yes Lowes)! I have three of these going down beside the stairs that lead down into my garden. They always grow well. P.S. This is not another plant called Sundance,which is a whole nother plant. Phil

KayleRed : I have one which looks like your 'Twilight' shown, but was told it is 'Frances William' and I seem to agree. Mine is probably a FW seedling. You can compare Hosta Library, and I am certainly not an expert.

Hmm, berndnyz...to my eye, 'Twilight' and 'Frances Williams' are actually pretty different. For starters, they're different colors!

Here's my 3 year old 'Frances Williams' emerging last year:

And here's 'Twilight' again for reference. Note the dark green with yellow margins as opposed to opposed to blue-green with yellow on 'Frances Williams.'

I have to agree with 'Twilight' as being underrated. And when you look at it at twilight you'll know it is aptly named. The yellow margines seem to glow at that time.

I also have St. Paul and am quite found of it. It led me to start a thread like this last year. I have found it to be a great grower. Also, your photo of Squash Casserole has earned it a spot on my wish list for next year.

Your Frances William seems to have rather small golden borders, but perhaps because it is young. Another lookalike is (to me) Abiqua Moonbeam which is a seedling of August Moon. I found mine inbetween August Moons :

My 'Frances Willamss' is young, yes, and was just emerging in the photo...but comparing photos of it and 'Twilight' there's a huge difference to me, not so much in the width of the margins but the color, form, texture, etc. 'Twilight' is of h. fortunei parentage and 'Frances Williams' is a sieboldiana.

Maybe we're just looking at different types of subtle differences.

My pick for underated is Rickrack. I never see it mentioned, it is green but super ruffly, good growing and medium sized.

shade_tolerant, I'd like to talk about a trade for a few eyes of the plant H. 'Rickrack' please?
